200 Goals Milestone: Joining Liverpool’s Elite
From Champions League semi-final goals to magnificent solo goals, to a Merseyside Derby Puskas winner – Mo Salah has produced a number of iconic moments over the years. Salah’s equaliser at Crystal Palace was his 200th goal for Liverpool, becoming just the fifth player in the club’s history to achieve the landmark. The Egyptian King joins an illustrious list of names, alongside Ian Rush, Roger Hunt, Gordon Hodgson, and Billy Liddell. With 200 goals in 327 games, only Gordon Hodgson out of the top four has a better goal per game ratio than Salah.
Today, we’re going to be looking at Salah’s top five goals since his arrival on Merseyside back in 2017.
5 – 2017/18 Champions League Semi-Final vs AS Roma
Within his first season on Merseyside, Mohamed Salah faced a visit from his former side in the opening leg of the Champions League Semi-Final. Salah scored a brace to send Liverpool on their way to a storming 5-2 victory at Anfield. His first was a classic long-range curler into the top corner from the edge of the area, beating future Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker in the process. Liverpool would unfortunately go on to lose 3-1 to Real Madrid in the final, but it was certainly the start of an incredible ride for the Reds.
4 – 2017/18 Premier League vs Everton
The fact that a Puskas winning goal is only fourth on this list, speaks volumes of Salah’s brilliance. Salah stole the show in his Merseyside Derby debut at Anfield, as he scored one of the greatest derby goals ever seen. As he picked up the ball on the edge of the box, Salah left Everton’s Cuco Martina on the floor before curling the ball into the top corner. The forward would go on to break the Premier League goal record, with 32 goals in his first season back in the Premier League.
Derby Brilliance and Premier League Dominance
3 – 2021/22 Premier League vs Watford
Salah has always enjoyed a game against Watford, with nine goals and three assists in eight games against the Hornets. In the midst of a push towards the quadruple in the 2021/22 season, Liverpool enjoyed an iconic 5-0 victory at Vicarage Road. It was Salah who stole the headlines with a fantastic solo goal, despite Roberto Firmino bagging himself a hat-trick. Salah picked up the ball on the edge of the box, before dancing past four Watford defenders and curling the ball into the far post. Even the Watford supporters applauded Salah that day.
2 – 2018/19 Premier League vs Chelsea
You’ll struggle to find a better example of how to silence your haters than Mohamed Salah’s wonderstrike against Chelsea back in 2019. As Liverpool went toe-to-toe with Manchester City for the Premier League title, a victory against Chelsea at Anfield was crucial to keep the title race alive. Sadio Mane opened the scoring early in the second half, before Salah slammed home a thunderstrike from 25-yards-out. The victory sent Liverpool on their way to a 97-point finish, but that still wasn’t enough to lift the Premier League title.
The Goal That Defined a Rivalry
1 – 2021/22 Premier League vs Manchester City
This is quite comfortably my favourite Mo Salah goal since his arrival at the club, in one of the highest-quality games of football the league has seen. With Liverpool and Man City set for another magnificent title race in 2021/22, the October clash at Anfield was seen as a potential title decider. The game finished 2-2 and the title race would continue all the way up until the final five minutes of the season, but Salah stole the headlines on this occasion. Salah danced his way around the likes of Bernardo Silva, Aymeric Laporte, and Ruben Dias before slamming the ball past Ederson with his ‘weaker’ right foot. This is certainly a goal that will be on compilations for many years to come, and epitomises the class of this Liverpool and Manchester City rivalry.
