Palace resistance changes Liverpool transfer picture
Liverpool have reportedly reopened discussions with Brighton and Hove Albion over Yankuba Minteh as uncertainty surrounds the attacking options available to Andoni Iraola.
According to Foday Manneh on X, Liverpool’s interest in Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr is not currently progressing. Palace are said to have delivered a “big no” when presented with the possibility of selling the Senegal international, forcing Liverpool to examine alternative targets.
That has brought Minteh back into focus. Manneh reports that Liverpool have “reactivated talks with Brighton for Yankuba”, with the 22-year-old described as Iraola’s preferred choice.
It is an intriguing development at a point when Liverpool appear to be balancing immediate requirements with longer-term planning. Sarr would offer experience and familiarity with the demands of English football, but Palace’s position leaves little room for negotiation unless their stance changes significantly.
Minteh represents a different proposition. Younger and carrying considerable potential, he could be viewed as an investment whose value extends well beyond the current transfer window. Brighton, however, have built a reputation for extracting maximum value from their most desirable players. Any Liverpool agreement is therefore unlikely to be straightforward.
Iraola preference places Minteh at centre of plans
Iraola’s reported preference is important because recruitment works best when a player’s qualities correspond with the manager’s tactical demands.
Minteh’s speed, direct running and willingness to attack space would provide Liverpool with a natural threat from wide areas. He can stretch a defensive line, carry the ball through pressure and create disorder by driving towards goal. Those attributes could be particularly valuable against opponents who attempt to compress the centre of the pitch.
There would still be an adaptation process. Possessing the physical tools to influence matches is only one part of succeeding at Liverpool. Iraola would also require discipline without the ball, intelligent pressing and reliable decision-making in crowded attacking areas.
Yet Minteh’s age makes development part of the appeal. Manneh describes him as “a long-term plan now for the Reds”, suggesting that Liverpool’s interest is not solely a response to the difficulties surrounding Sarr.
That distinction matters. Opportunistic recruitment can solve an immediate shortage, but Liverpool will want any major addition to retain a clear purpose once the present uncertainty has passed. If Minteh is genuinely considered a long-term target, the club must decide whether to act now or risk allowing his price and profile to rise further.
Gakpo uncertainty adds urgency to negotiations
Cody Gakpo’s future is another significant element in Liverpool’s decision-making. The report claims that the Netherlands international has agreed terms with Manchester City, although no completed transfer between the clubs has been announced.
Manneh suggests Liverpool could try to persuade Gakpo to remain until January because of the limited options available in the market. Such an arrangement would provide Iraola with short-term cover while giving the recruitment department more time to secure a suitable replacement.
It would not, however, be an ideal foundation for the season. Keeping a player temporarily after he has reportedly agreed personal terms elsewhere could create uncertainty for everybody involved. Liverpool would have to judge whether Gakpo remained fully committed and whether delaying a move would genuinely strengthen the squad.
His departure could also alter the scale of Liverpool’s business. Manneh reports that the club might pursue both Minteh and Sarr if Gakpo leaves. That possibility would depend on Palace softening their position, as well as Liverpool finding room within their transfer budget for two substantial deals.
Signing both players would give Iraola contrasting options. Sarr brings greater experience, while Minteh offers youth and potential growth. It would also reduce the risk of placing too much creative responsibility on a single arrival.
Liverpool face decisive talks over attacking reinforcements
Liverpool’s immediate challenge is to establish which parts of this developing situation can realistically become agreements.
Brighton have little incentive to weaken their squad without receiving an attractive offer. Palace’s reported refusal to entertain a Sarr sale is even more direct. Liverpool may admire both players, but interest alone will not secure either of them.
Minteh nevertheless appears to be the more attainable option at present. The renewed contact with Brighton, combined with Iraola’s reported preference and Liverpool’s long-term interest, gives that pursuit a clearer sense of direction.
Much could depend on Gakpo. If he stays, Liverpool may decide that one addition is sufficient before revisiting the market in January. If he leaves, the need for attacking depth becomes more pressing and could encourage the club to test Palace’s resolve again.
For now, Minteh is the name at the heart of Liverpool’s plans. Talks with Brighton may still require patience, but the logic behind the pursuit is evident. Iraola needs pace, width and players capable of developing within his system. Minteh appears to satisfy each of those requirements.
The next stage will reveal whether Liverpool’s renewed interest is exploratory or the beginning of a serious attempt to bring him to Anfield.
