Liverpool Interest in Lamine Camara Continues as Midfield Plans Take Shape

Liverpool’s interest in AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara appears to be one worth watching as attention gradually turns towards the next phase of the club’s midfield rebuild.

Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Liverpool reporter David Lynch confirmed that Camara is a player the club have monitored for some time, while discussing the wider list of midfielders being considered.

Davis raised reports concerning Liverpool’s interest in Camara alongside Manu Koné and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, with the Monaco midfielder’s name continuing to feature prominently in discussions surrounding Liverpool’s recruitment plans.

Liverpool Have Watched Lamine Camara for Some Time

For Lynch, the important detail is that Liverpool’s admiration for Camara is not particularly new.

“Obviously we know with Lamine Camara they’ve been watching for a while,” Lynch told Davis.

That provides useful context when assessing the latest reports.

Camara, 22, has developed into an established midfielder at AS Monaco after joining from Metz in 2024. Liverpool’s continued monitoring suggests he remains within the group of potential options as the club assess how their midfield should evolve.

Davis referenced David Ornstein’s discussion of Liverpool’s interest in Camara on The Athletic FC Podcast, while also noting further reports connecting the Senegal international with a possible January move.

The immediate question is therefore less about whether Liverpool admire Camara, and more about when they might decide to act.

January Transfer or Summer 2027 Move?

Lynch believes the timing remains unclear.

“The interesting thing to be able to get a handle on is whether that is something they will act on in January or whether it’s something they see as a summer thing when that comes around,” he explained.

“So, you know, we don’t really know in this moment, but really interesting to kind of keep an eye on.”

That distinction could become important.

Liverpool decided against making another midfield addition during the summer transfer window. According to Lynch, however, midfield recruitment is expected to become a major focus as the club move towards 2027.

“We know Liverpool are now looking at the midfield in the way that they knew they couldn’t do anything in the summer,” Lynch said.

“That change is coming into 2027. It’s probably the main priority that they are looking at.”

Whether Liverpool accelerate those plans in January remains uncertain.

“Whether that’s January or not, I’m not sure. We’ll just have to kind of wait and see.”

Camara Part of Wider Liverpool Midfield Search

Liverpool are clearly keeping their options open.

Alongside Camara, Davis mentioned Koné and Scott, and Lynch confirmed that Liverpool have previously watched Koné and appear to have maintained their interest.

“With Koné, it kind of surprises me. Obviously was someone they watched a few years back, but they’ve obviously been keeping tabs.”

Lynch described Koné as being “in that mix of midfielders who are playing well and could be potentials”, while Scott is another player attracting attention from leading Premier League clubs.

Camara, though, stands out because Liverpool’s monitoring has apparently been taking place over an extended period.

Reports elsewhere this month have also indicated that Camara remained at Monaco after a proposed move to Chelsea failed late in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool Midfield Decision Looms

There is no suggestion from Lynch that Liverpool have decided to sign Camara, nor that a January transfer is currently certain.

What can be established is that Liverpool have watched the Monaco midfielder “for a while”, midfield recruitment is becoming an increasingly significant priority and the club are considering several potential options.

That makes Camara a name worth remembering as January approaches.

Liverpool’s midfield under Andoni Iraola is already beginning to show encouraging signs, with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai impressing against Atletico Madrid. Recruitment, however, is rarely planned around one performance or one month.

The club are looking further ahead.

As Lynch explained, “That change is coming into 2027.”

Whether Lamine Camara becomes the player Liverpool choose to make that change with could become one of the more intriguing recruitment stories of the coming months.
