SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Looking deeper into the feud between Jurgen Klopp and Paul Tierney

Liverpool's 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday was filled with passion and tension both and off the pitch, but also proved to be the tipping point between Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester-born Premier League referee, Paul Tierney. Speaking after the game, Klopp claimed: "We have our history with Mr. Tierney, I really don't know...

Liverpool 4 Tottenham 3 – The Post-Mortem

This was the same match-up that contested the Champions League final in 2019, where one ultra-organised and ruthless team was able to overcome a team built upon growth, desire, and team spirit. That contest became a chess match that Liverpool were able to game-manage with relative ease, absolute professionalism, and control in abundance. The...

Klopp’s Shock as Thiago Plays Tactical Whisperer

Yesterday, Anfield was the stage for a performance that had more twists and turns than an episode of Top Gear. Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool's very own Stig, found himself flabbergasted by a peculiar touchline moment involving Thiago and Darwin Nunez during the Reds' thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Picture the scene: Liverpool's gaffer, with his...

Klopp’s Reaction: Frustration Fuelled by Inconsistent Officiating

Should Jurgen Klopp have galloped over to the fourth official to celebrate an injury-time winner right in his face? Probably not, no. Should that be the focus of every news and media outlet for the foreseeable future? Definitely not, no. Klopp’s reaction was unwarranted but it was human. How often is that defence used when...

Lessons Learned: Liverpool 4 Spurs 3

Liverpool 4 Tottenham 3 – Man of the Match

Luis Diaz This is a player that can elevate us and bring in moments of quality, that can get us over the line in the coming seasons. Before signing the former Porto man, he was looking like a recruit that would end up at White Hart Lane. That deal fell apart as soon as Liverpool entered...

Liverpool 4 Tottenham 3 – Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 6.0 Our player of the season, he was always going to be vital to a positive result. Could do nothing for the opening goal, whilst making a key stop shortly thereafter. Was given little chance for the Son goal or the equalizer, but was able to make crucial moments count. Trent Alexander Arnold...

Klopp Slams Ref Tierney: “What Does He Have Against Us?”

Jurgen Klopp was not chuffed with Paul Tierney against Tottenham Liverpool's gaffer, Jurgen Klopp, has had a proper go at referee Paul Tierney following Sunday's win over Tottenham. While he has achieved great heights, including winning the PFA Players' Player of the Year in 2018-19, he has also had...

Liverpool FC – Scouting Report: Manuel Ugarte

What Comes Next for Darwin Núñez…

In a deal that could eventually (and hopefully) reach £85m, the capture of our Uruguayan striker, Darwin Núñez, was heralded as the perfect response to Manchester City’s signing of their phenomenal goal machine, Erling Haaland. The Community Shield (back in August) offered great hope to all Liverpool fans, as our monstrous defenders pocketed Haaland...

Reds Zero in on Gravenberch: Bayern Star Wants Out

Ryan Gravenberch's patience seems to be wearing thin as he implores Bayern Munich to reconsider their position on his potential departure this summer. Brighton Gunning for Liverpool’s Milner

Imagine, if you will, David Ornstein from The Athletic revealing a juicy tidbit: Brighton, with a glint in their eye, are revving their engines for a daring manoeuvre to snatch Liverpool's midfield veteran, James Milner, as he saunters into the great unknown of free agency this summer. At the grand age of 37, Milner's contract...

Thiago is Klopp’s Most Disappointing Midfielder

Who is the most disappointing midfielder for Liverpool during the Jurgen Klopp era? The obvious answer is Naby Keita. But for me it’s been Thiago. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performances over the last few games and especially at West Ham have shown the damage direct passing to the forwards can do. Everyone’s favourite floating full back has...

Klopp Confirms Konaté Comeback, Jota’s Fitness in Balance

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Ibrahima Konate will return to the squad as Liverpool host Tottenham, while hopes are Diogo Jota has avoided injury. Across the last four games, Klopp has only made one change to his starting lineup, that being the omission of Konate for Wednesday’s 2-1 win at West Ham. The Frenchman was left out...

Cody Gakpo a bright spark in Liverpool’s stuttering season

Patience is something that is important in football and something that has increasingly disappeared in the modern game. Players are written off too soon, managers are sacked before they get a chance to prove their worth and everything is about the here and now. This certainly applied with Cody Gakpo in his early weeks in a...

West Ham 1 Liverpool 2 – The Post-Mortem

Both Liverpool and West Ham headed into this game in fine recent form, despite both enduring difficulties in their own domestic campaigns. This was an entertaining midweek battle, one which allowed a cut and thrust that shone under the London Stadium's lights. There could and probably should have been more goals, yet for Jürgen...

Trent Alexander-Arnold launches ‘The After Academy’

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of the fortunate few. The Salah Free-Kick Conundrum – Stats Analysis

The rarer something is, the more valuable it becomes. It’s simple supply and demand, as any student of GSCE Economics – I got an A, #humblebrag – can tell you. A copy of Northern Soul belter ‘Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)’ by Frank Wilson once sold for over £100,000 as there are...

Golden Gakpo Steps Up as Liverpool’s Firmino Heir

Blimey, Jurgen Klopp must be feeling like a kid in a sweet shop with his forwards. Even with Bobby Firmino on the treatment table, Liverpool's gaffer has Mo Salah, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo all scrapping for three spots in the attack. "The ticket into this team must be and will be...
