Scouser Tommies: BEYOND TIRED

Scouser Tommies: BEYOND TIRED

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back for another episode of Scouser Tommies, the show providing an honest assessment of all things Liverpool FC from right on the club’s doorstep. Yet again—as has been the case far too often this season—very few of those things are pleasant to talk about. The hope that sprung from 5-0 and 4-1 wins against Qarabag and Newcastle respectively went out the window when Arne Slot masterminded yet another Anfield defeat, this time at the hands of Manchester City. Since the turn of the year, Liverpool have won just one of their seven league games; it's nowhere near the form required to challenge for the Champions League places. In fact, if this rot doesn’t stop, there’s every chance the final game of the season could see Jordan Henderson and Brentford consigning the Reds to a year without even the Thursday night stuff to fall back on. You know things are bad when you can’t even laugh at the neighbours. With Everton standing ready to overtake Liverpool in the league, the club has plumbed depths rarely seen in recent decades. When things go wrong, there seems to be no Plan B—except for a Plan B that involves doing everything in even worse fashion than before. It hasn’t been entirely negative these past few weeks, but the only real silver linings are that there is a talented squad at the club—even if some have been over-indulged, some aren't getting a fair crack, and far too many are being run into the ground. The "positive" to take is that another manager could certainly work with these tools and get far more out of them, but how long will it take for the powers that be to blink? And no, celebrating another empty transfer window with self-congratulatory propaganda interviews, as half the squad is out injured or on the verge of it, is not a good look, whatever your PR brain told you. Jay and Jim do their best to find some light in the dark, but they aren't miracle workers. It says a lot about the state of the Reds when one of the best goals ever seen at Anfield is completely overshadowed by the chaos that followed it. Liverpool’s players looked beyond tired as that City game went on, a mirror of how the fans feel right now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Why Jurrien Timber might be the right fit for Liverpool

Liverpool’s to-do list this summer seems to be increasing by the week.   You could easily justify a minimum of three midfielders. There is an argument for a back-up right-back coming in too, especially if James Milner doesn’t renew for another season. Calvin Ramsay’s debut campaign has been decimated by injury and he could perhaps do...

Aurélien Tchouaméni & The Midfield Alternative…

During this time of mourning (where some Liverpool fans have been left reeling by the Jude Bellingham news), it’s now important to look at other possible transfer targets, as the Ferrari apparently became just too expensive. Now I’m not a major fan of sports cars, as they’re too low, too small, and far too...

Jude Bellingham & The Big Decision

Late last Tuesday evening, several highly regarded sports journalists reported that Liverpool had pulled out of the race for Jude Bellingham. The £120m deal has either frightened away the FSG money men, or they are attempting to drive down Borussia Dortmund’s hefty asking price. Liverpool have commonly pulled out of high profile moves in...

Can Liverpool salvage their 2022-23 season?

Not since Jurgen Klopp's debut in England have Liverpool been out of the top four. The last time they were out of the top two was in the 2017/18 season. It is the German's seventh year at the club and his infamous "seventh-season curse" has struck. This has made all the team's effort feel fruitless...

Lessons Learned: Leeds 1 Liverpool 6

It’s another one of those games that Liverpool have been able to produce in a distinctly average season. Leeds went the way of Bournemouth, Rangers, and Manchester United in receiving an absolute hiding from the Reds. Jurgen Klopp described it as our best game of the season which is ironic as for many it...

How Trent Alexander-Arnold could be the future of Liverpool’s midfield

Liverpool put in a fantastic display in their 6-1 demolition of Leeds United at Elland Road, where Trent Alexander-Arnold was the star of the show. Jurgen Klopp opted to continue with the same system that had forced Arsenal into a total collapse at Anfield last week, with the full-back joining Fabinho at the base of...

Leeds 1 Liverpool 6 – Man of the Match

Trent Alexander Arnold It would have been easy to pick out Diogo Jota for man of the match, with a ferocious period of play. The Portuguese forward has endured some harrowing form (of late), so tonight allowed him to show his best attributes. Those moments were decisive and key to the second-half goal fest, with...

Leeds 1 Liverpool 6 – Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 7.0 Shook off whatever issues he had before the weekend, in order to resume his duties in goal. Had to make some smart saves through the opening period as Leeds were able to break away too often. He could do little to stop Leeds's early second-half goal, as Ibou allowed a free...

How Liverpool Should Tackle These Final Nine Games?

These are the remaining fixtures on the Reds' Premier League schedule, which may define how they undertake their upcoming summer recruitment drive. Leeds United - Away Nottingham Forest - Home West Ham - Away Tottenham Hotspur - Home Fulham - Home Brentford - Home Leicester City - Away Aston Villa - Home Southampton - Away With the much spoken about Jude Bellingham saga rumbling...

Klopp Embargo: Pick Your Interpretation

It had a bigger billing than a lot of recent movies at the box office on Friday afternoon. One sweep of social media will tell you there are mixed reactions to the embargoed section of Jurgen Klopp’s press conference. The build up can always leave a disappointment with the main event, but suggestions that...

Premier League Preview

We're into the final stretch of the 2022/23 Premier League season and it's still all to play for from top to bottom of the league table. At the top we have a title race, between Arsenal and Manchester City, we have a battle for 3rd and 4th with Newcastle, Manchester United, Tottenham and Brighton, and...

Penalties: Salah Stays… For Now

It’s hard to know which of the two things was more surprising in all truth. The fact Liverpool got another penalty this season or Mo Salah missing a second consecutive one. He should also have had another late on after Gabriel’s common assault, but the less we say about the officiating in this game...

Tony Evans: Should We Change The Players or The Manager?

The winter of Jude Bellingham is over. The summer of discontent has begun. There are so many things wrong with Liverpool Football Club that it’s hard to know where to begin. Letting the Bellingham speculation get out of control was a bad mistake. Killing it off this week is another error. Rather than suggesting the money...

It’s the Bellingham lies that frustrate, not the logic

So, an already-dreadful season has just got even worse for Liverpool. For many Reds supporters, there was a genuine chance of Jude Bellingham coming to Anfield this summer, even though others always felt it was a pipe dream. All along, the 19-year-old has seemingly always favoured a move to Liverpool, liking the idea of playing under...

Leeds v Liverpool – The PL Preview

Next Monday sees a matchup between two teams fighting very different battles. Both clubs are legendary institutions of English football, therefore this should be an interesting battle between two sides struggling for consistency. Elland Road will be the venue for a match up that has produced some brilliant moments over the years, with this...

Three Jude Bellingham alternatives to solve Liverpool midfield crisis

With news breaking last night that Liverpool have 'cooled' their interest in Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham, the Reds will be forced into looking at cheaper alternatives in the upcoming summer window. According to Fabrizio Romano, Jurgen Klopp will still look to sign two or three midfielders to add depth as well as quality to an already...

Dr Phil’s Diagnosis: Arsenal

After an absolute rollercoaster of a game at Anfield where a point didn’t quite seem a fair reward for a lesser-famed comeback on Easter Sunday, Dave Davis walks through the Arsenal match with Dr Phil Barter from the Under Pressure Pod to find a snippet of what the data told us and look at...

John W Henry – All Out Of Apologies

FSG (Fenway Sports Group) have had several parties ready to make very big offers in recent months but nobody was willing to reach the £4.5 billion ceiling required for John W Henry to part ways with Liverpool FC. It was Mr. Henry that made the ultimate; not unanimous, call not to entertain any offers. He...

How The Trent Positional Shift Can Tell a Tactical Story…

At the weekend we saw a magnificent footballing spectacle between two of English footballs most historic clubs. Anfield played host to the current Premier League leaders, Arsenal, in a game which could still help decide who the eventual Champions will be. It was very much a game of two halves, as the North London...

Fabinho: Smart Business Needed This Summer

It’s hard to think that only a year ago we’d look at the spine of this Liverpool team and think it’s up there with anyone in world football. Whilst Allison and Mo Salah can still hold their heads high, the fall-off in Virgil Van Dijk and Fabinho has gone beyond alarming. Whilst he was...

Three summer signings to get Liverpool back on track

The upcoming summer transfer window could be a really exciting one for Liverpool supporters, with the club tipped to make a number of moves at the end of the season. Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joel Matip could all need replacing as they continue to be linked with moves away from Anfield. Here is...

Roméo Lavia & The Defensive Midfield Solution

At the outset of this season, there were a number of issues that didn’t get a transfer-based solution. When Julian Ward missed out on Aurélien Tchouaméni, it was assumed that we were missing out on the eventual Gini Wijnaldum replacement (at LCM), or the player that would ease the captain out of the side,...

Lessons Learned: Arsenal

What a game to be at, what an atmosphere to be a part of and how we didn’t win will be the question all Reds are asking this week. Liverpool came from 2-0 down against the side who are top of the league and as Jurgen Klopp put it, should have won. The only...

Leadership Group: Think Carefully For Next Season

Harvey Elliott’s guest spot on the We Are Liverpool podcast was telling in a number of ways. The youngster was especially quick to praise the effect Mo Salah has had on his development, referencing an incident in pre-season. “In Austria, it was breakfast and I had two bread rolls, because I normally do so...

A New Attitude is Just as Important as a New Midfield

Liverpool's season has been a failure, and for a team that came so close to achieving immortality last season, it's a bitter pill to swallow. As we saw when they woke up and decided to take part in the game against Arsenal on Sunday, this Liverpool team is still capable of putting good teams to...

Robertson Incident: Hypocrisy and Tribalism Afoot

To be honest, I’m pretty certain most fans wouldn’t have recognised the name Constantine Hatzidakis before the weekend but when your elbow connects with the face of Andy Robertson you’ll gain a certain notoriety depending on allegiances. The uproar, tribalism and arguments are now in full swing with objectivity the key item now under...

Liverpool 2 – 2 Arsenal – The Post-Mortem

The best and worst of our turbulent season was presented to the world on Easter Sunday, as the once mighty Reds capitulated before a shell-shocked crowd, before being driven to an emphatic home draw by the same Anfield support. The game should have had a winner, with Liverpool desperate to land the knockout blow...

Scouting Report: Alexis Mac Allister

Another day of the week and another midfielder is linked to Liverpool. Similarly to the Bellingham, Mount and Nunes rumours there appears to be real credibility to this one which has been mentioned by a few different sources. A World Cup winner, a ruthless transfer negotiator combined with our clear and obvious need means...

Liverpool 2 – 2 Arsenal- PL Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 6.0 Two close range efforts left the giant keeper little chance, as the reds gave away the first period of the game. A solid showing all around. Was not his best display with some unsure handling. Trent Alexander Arnold - 7.0 The best and worst of our much talked about fullback. He was targeted...
