SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. The Undercard Of The Week | Palace 1 Liverpool 2

I can’t think about the Champions League. Sorry, but I just can’t. It’s too big. I’d like to describe what’s going through my mind when I think about that tie, but it would be like trying to explain the plot of The Godfather: Part Two in six words. Impossible. If the two games with City...

Beating the Dross – Liverpool’s Big Improvement

Liverpool are doing markedly better against the teams that are not considered to be particularly good this year. This should not be considered a controversial statement after all this Liverpool side are doing marginally better than last year and have dropped off markedly against the top six, so clearly, those extra points are coming...

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool: A Tactical Breakdown

After the international break, it's always interesting to see how a team performs, and Liverpool appeared to start brightly against Palace, but soon it became clear that if Liverpool were to take anything from this game, they needed to really work for it, as simple passes went astray, and frustration built up. If you...

With an epic two-legged quarter-final looming against Manchester City, I took a look at the way both teams attack. The Champions League tie promises to be one of those contests for the ages. Observations as Klopp Reigns Supreme Over Hodgson

Liverpool managed to overcome a first-half deficit against bogey team Crystal Palace to take the three points at Selhurst Park after goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah turned the tie on its head. Here are the observations from the match. Why Always Me? If Liverpool were going to find a winner against Palace in the dying...

Lineup: Karius, TAA, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Gini, Henderson, Milner, Salah, Firmino, Mané Subs: Clyne, Lovren, Moreno, Lallana, Chamberlain, Mignolet, Ings Coming off of what seemed like a month-long international break Liverpool supporters were understandably anxious to see the Reds in something more action-packed than an Instagram story. But, it only took a few minutes for that anticipation...

Player Ratings as Salah’s Strike Downs Eagles

Palace away, I don't think I'll ever be able to enjoy it. Six goals and two wins in the last couple of trips there, but have either been fun? Credit to Palace, their main strength is that they don't make it fun for their opponents. Able to soak up the pressure and then race forward...

Gomez Injury Leaves The Door Wide Open At Right Back Amid Crucial Run

International breaks are the bane of every football fans' existence. They mark a drab period bereft of football, entertaining football at least, in which clubs are left to sweat over the fitness of their star players amid a crucial league run. Thankfully for Liverpool, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and the in-form Andrew Robertson all came...

Crystal Palace v Liverpool Preview – Key Battles

After the lull of the international break, Liverpool are back in action at the business end of the season. It begins with a trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace, who are in desperate need of points to move away from relegation trouble. The Reds have won their last two matches at the Eagles'...

Salah or Suarez: Who reigns supreme?

28 league goals so far, and he doesn't seem to be slowing down: Mo Salah is blitzing his way through records as fast as he leaves defenders chasing dust on the pitch. It's truly remarkable, seeing Salah develop into a second striker, as Klopp looks to wean the very best out of his skills....

Sugarcoating Emre – The Can Situation Is A Disaster

There is no right way to leave a club. If nothing else, that’s the lesson that we can take from Liverpool in the last few months and even years. Zeroing in more specifically on Emre Can, it seems to me that there simply is no way that Emre can leave the club that won’t...

Analysing Liverpool’s Finances and Transfer Activity

When it comes to football, there are few things less interesting then examining sets of accounts. However, the audited set of figures released by Liverpool in the first week of March each year give one of the clearest indications of the off-field standing of the club and its ability to effectively challenge on the...

The Return of Roy – Crystal Palace v Liverpool

Come the summer of 2010 I’d had enough of Liverpool Football Club. Before you reach for your fiery torch and summon a lynch mob to my house I must offer up a defence. We’ve all had feelings like this from time to time. There is no one alive who thinks that the custodians of L4...

50 + 1 = Fan’s FC

We have all heard of, or seen on TV, the electrifying atmosphere in Bundesliga stadiums. A sight rarely witnessed in football anywhere in the world. The Bundesliga is breaking attendance records each year – well over 40,000 on average at each game – this season so far that number is over 44,000. More than...

Champions League Dreams – For Liverpool, not City!

A few of my writings over the years have had reference to songs or movies of old. This one is no different. As it’s a blockbuster tie, there’s only one way to go which is Frankie Goes to Hollywood!!! We've two legs coming up against Manchester City. The fun all starts at Anfield on...

Roberto Firmino – How Good Is He?

Bobby Firmino. A player with so much to offer Liverpool. Bobby is a huge component of what Jürgen Klopp is trying to build for so many reasons, and he’s having an absolutely terrific season as he starts to fulfil his potential in this team. Whilst Mo Salah has been rightfully grabbing the majority of...

Liverpool’s Attack: From Down Right Disaster To Destructive In Just Three Years

Cast your minds back to the gloomy 2014/15 season in which Liverpool parted ways with the talismanic figure of Luis Suarez, replacing him with Rickie Lambert and the ever egotistical Mario Balotelli. From goals galore in 2013/14 to a troublesome goal drought the following season, Brendan Rodgers' side went from a team that could do...

Liverpool Football Club has a new identity

Fast, high energy, counter-attacking football - Liverpool Football Club has a new identity. When Jurgen Klopp was appointed manager back in October 2015, Liverpool Football Club was a team that lacked any sort of identity, yes we were a historic club who once use to grace & conquer Europe on a regular basis but...

Do Liverpool Need a Timo Werner?

It shouldn’t be news to anyone who’s watched either the Premier League or Champions League this season or has paid attention to Jürgen Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool, but Liverpool are very good at scoring goals. Liverpool have scored three or more goals in twenty-one matches this season. In the Premier League, they’ve scored 73 goals,...

Emre Exit: Liverpool’s calm crisis

A World Cup summer and a key player is trying to manipulate the market to get himself to a “very big club?” I know all of you readers are shocked at the mere possibility. Emre Can’s quotes, or at least the most nefariously framed ones, strongly suggest that he’ll be on the move after his...

‘Not as good as last year’ Mane keeps on delivering

“He just doesn’t look right.” “It looks like Salah’s rise has affected his confidence.” “Where is the Sadio Mane of last season?” The first two quotes there have been made pretty often through the course of this season, but do they carry any weight? When you look at performances and numbers to go with it, there is...

Klopp vs Guardiola: Battle of the Titans

The microphone swayed slowly in the air of the silent, eager room, now abuzz with excitement watching the centre of the ring. Andriy Shevchenko takes hold of the microphone and with a knowing smile, eyes up the audience. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the heavyweight division. In the blue corner, we have Guardiola, the...

Where Does Salah Rank Among Europe’s Best?

The nature of the conversation around Mo Salah has indeed shifted in recent weeks, culminating in a significant shift following Liverpool’s 5-0 win over Watford. Salah was of course, entirely unplayable on Saturday, scoring four and assisting Bobby Firmino’s goal, but that performance was only the cherry on top of what has been a...

Anfield’s SeatServe – American Anfield

Ahead of Liverpool’s enthralling 5-0 win over Watford on Saturday evening, I was angered to see stickers slapped on the bank of seats promoting an app that Liverpool Football Club are now using. This app, SeatServe, allows fans to have food and drink personally delivered to their seats before the game, at halftime, or even...

The Liverpool and Manchester City Rivalry

To describe Liverpool and Manchester City as a “rivalry” is perhaps a bit of a stretch. The majority of rivalries have a rich history of competition, and truthfully there’s only been a handful of games over a handful of seasons where Liverpool and City have been at it, hammer and tongs, on a relatively...

Andy Robertson: Mr. Consistent Impressing For Liverpool Again

During last summer in which Liverpool did some fine business for the long-term, from the unparalleled brilliance of Mohamed Salah to the utility of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, there is one man that has been the unsung hero through all of this - Andy Robertson. When Robertson was signed from Hull City last summer for £8 million...
