The Transfer Show: Slot, Alonso and Liverpool’s Summer Crossroads

Trev Downey and Dave Davis assess the growing pressure on Arne Slot and why the Burnley draw became such a pivotal moment in the fan narrative. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. A guide to betting on Liverpool during the 2021/22 season

Betting on the Reds  Liverpool had a difficult 2020/21 campaign, failing to win any silverware throughout the season. The Premier League...

Liverpool FC and VAR: Premier League has to make it work better

In today’s world, fans and experts can argue about what is the main factor that drives modern football – money or technology. A separate question would be whether the changes are for the better or worse. The fact remains that tech influences the discipline greatly. Video Assistant Referee is a perfect example and Liverpool...

Curtis Jones – The Next Step

There have been many young Liverpool players that were primed to make it to the top, however the list of players that actually make it is rather short. Liverpool cannot simply blood youth and maintain levels, thus the domestic cups and throwaway Champions League games are used to give minutes to certain players. Trent Alexander...

Why Harvey Elliott might be a better fit in midfield

Everyone just assumed Harvey Elliott would be the long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah. I imagine it is because both are left-footed and both are better when they’re allowed to cut inside from the right.  However, Elliott impressed in midfield during a pre-season friendly, with Salah deployed in his usual right-wing role. Klopp praised the youngster...

James Milner: The Final Year

It seems as though he has been around forever, and with one more year on his Liverpool contract, James Milner is still a valuable squad member. His minutes from last season will most probably now drop significantly, but his presence is still an important one for the reds. When leaving Manchester City at 29...

The European Championships are over, Wimbledon is done, silly season has well and truly begun. Naby Keïta – Last Chance Saloon

When the vacant number 8 shirt was reassigned to the little Guinean (Naby Keïta), it was another sign of Liverpool shopping from close to the top shelf. Naby, when playing under the RB umbrella of first Salzburg and then Leipzig, signed on amidst much competition. The main rival to his signature appeared to be Bayern...

Adrián – An Easy Signing

Liverpool FC have maybe the best goalkeeper in world football right now, alongside Jan Oblak. There isn’t a feasible means of signing a competing back up, therefore a blend of both promising youth & experience makes up the keeping unit at Liverpool. This seems to be a dynamic that works best for Alisson Becker,...

Why Liverpool’s buy-to-sell model needs looking at

Liverpool are, rightly, lauded for their transfer business. They’ve been near faultless with their incomings since Jurgen Klopp’s arrival in 2015. The Reds have mastered the whole finding undervalued assets and turning them into stars thing.  On the few occasions they’ve gone big on a player, the recruitment team have got it spot on with...

Football, as we know it, makes its long-awaited return in 2021-22, as fans will be back in stadiums, and the Premier League, will be back to the league that everybody wishes to see. There were six Liverpool representatives at Euro 2020, and all players made it to the knockout stages with their respective nations. Each player had different experiences throughout the tournament. Liverpool Left-Back Ready to Push For Starting Berth

Liverpool's Kostas Tsimikas insists he is ready to push for a more significant role this season as he looks to push on at Anfield. Tsimikas made just two late substitute appearances in last season's Premier League while starting only two matches in the Champions League as well. Still only 25, Tsimikas hopes to make more of...

Time for a central role for Mohamed Salah?

Liverpool are back, looking healthy and refreshed after a much-needed post-season break. The 2020/21 campaign was an intense one for the Reds, both mentally and physically, and both Jurgen Klopp and his players looked drained by the time they sealed Champions League football back in May. If one player carried this team more than anyone in...

Saúl Ñíguez – The Lowdown

When Liverpool ‘allowed’ Georginio Wijnaldum to wind down his Liverpool contract, it was a strange situation. All Liverpool fans wish him well, but it hasn’t quite sunk in that he’s no longer a red. As a nearly always available midfielder, he was certainly taken for granted, though definitely not under appreciated. With this Gini-sized...

Calling Saul Could Prove A Shrewd Liverpool Move

It's safe to say that Liverpool have kept any of their transfer intentions this summer under locky and key. Not since the links to Florian Neuhaus a couple of weeks ago have the Reds' beat reporters indicated the club having interest in any player. That hasn't stopped foreign sources mentioning the club's potential transfer plans,...
