Joe Gomez Return Gives Iraola Timely Liverpool Boost After Injury Layoff

Joe Gomez’s evening against Tottenham Hotspur lasted only 45 minutes, but for Liverpool and Andoni Iraola, that was precisely the point.

After spending the opening weeks of the season recovering from the injury he sustained during pre-season, Gomez returned to the starting line-up in Liverpool’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Spurs. He was also handed the captaincy as Iraola rotated his side.

When Jeremy Jacquet emerged in his place for the second half, there was understandable concern. Gomez’s career has contained enough interruptions for any unexpected substitution to invite questions.

This one, though, was largely part of the plan.

Iraola Carefully Manages Gomez Return

Iraola confirmed afterwards that Liverpool had never intended to push Gomez significantly beyond the interval.

Asked whether the substitution had been planned, Iraola explained: “Yes. Joe has been doing the recovery process very well and with him it made sense. It wasn’t set but the plan was not a lot more than 45, yes.”

That clarification matters for Liverpool.

Gomez had not played competitively since the final weekend of July, making a carefully managed return inevitable. Forty-five minutes offered him an opportunity to rediscover the rhythms of competitive football without Liverpool asking too much, too soon.

Gomez Offers Liverpool Defensive Security

There was little drama about Gomez’s performance, which was probably exactly what Iraola wanted.

The 29-year-old kept his game simple, defended his area and provided experience alongside a Liverpool team containing several younger players.

His numbers reflected that approach. Gomez recorded four clearances, two blocks and one interception during his 45 minutes on the pitch.

After such a lengthy absence, Liverpool needed reliability rather than spectacle. Gomez provided it.

There is also considerable value in simply having him available again. Liverpool’s fixture schedule will become increasingly demanding once the international window has passed, and Iraola will need enough defensive options to rotate without significantly weakening his side.

Bournemouth Selection Comes Into Focus

Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth may arrive too soon for Gomez to make another start.

Virgil van Dijk and Jacquet are likely to remain prominent at centre-back, while Ronald Araujo offers Iraola another option on the right side of the defence.

Gomez, however, now returns to that equation.

For a player whose season had effectively been placed on hold before it had properly started, Tuesday represented an important first step. Liverpool got 45 controlled minutes into his legs, Gomez came through them without an apparent setback, and Iraola now has another experienced defender available.

There will be more demanding evenings ahead. For Gomez and Liverpool, getting through this one quietly was valuable enough.
