Five league games, five outstanding performances and now another Man of the Match award for Jérémy Jacquet.

The 21-year-old French defender is beginning to look like one of the most important pieces of Andoni Iraola’s new Liverpool side, and his performance at the Vitality Stadium was another demonstration of just how quickly he is adapting to the demands of English football.

This was not a match where Liverpool were able to dominate from beginning to end. Bournemouth had spells of pressure, created opportunities and forced Alisson Becker into another excellent performance. Yet when Liverpool needed somebody to stand up and defend their advantage, Jacquet was there.

Again and again.

He was imperious in the challenge, bullish in his defensive work and showed an excellent understanding of where danger was developing. His ability to read the game meant that he was frequently in the right position before the danger had properly materialised.

That is a quality which cannot simply be coached overnight.

Jacquet is becoming a leader

What makes this performance particularly impressive is the age of the player.

At just 21, Jacquet is already showing the composure of a much more experienced defender. There was no panic when Bournemouth increased the pressure, no unnecessary diving into challenges and no sign that the occasion or the atmosphere at the Vitality Stadium was affecting his decision-making.

He cleared his lines repeatedly and remained switched on throughout.

The second half was another example of his maturity. Liverpool were defending a narrow lead and Bournemouth were determined to find an equaliser, but Jacquet continued to make the right decisions. He was exactly where Liverpool needed him to be.

There were several other contenders for this award. Alisson Becker was superb once again, producing a sensational low save and making several important decisions when Bournemouth threatened. Ronald Araújo was equally impressive, particularly with his physicality and ability to win crucial headers late in the match.

Alexis Mac Allister also deserves considerable credit. At times, the Argentine looked like Liverpool’s only natural central midfielder, providing control, passing quality and protection as the game became increasingly stretched. Trey Nyoni is the only other player who showed the same intelligence in the double pivot.

Those performances are important because the spine of this Liverpool team is beginning to take shape.

Alisson behind Jacquet and Araújo, with Mac Allister providing control in front of them, gives Iraola something to build around.

And Jacquet is rapidly becoming the standout component of that defensive foundation.

Liverpool did not produce a perfect performance at Bournemouth, but they showed something equally important: control when it mattered.

They absorbed pressure, defended their lead and left the south coast with three valuable points.

For Jacquet, another Man of the Match award is further evidence that Liverpool may have found a defender capable of becoming a major figure in this new era.

At just 21, there is still an enormous amount of development ahead.

But if these opening performances are anything to go by, Liverpool supporters have plenty of reason to be excited about what comes next.
