Andoni Iraola’s Right-Back Gamble Exposes Liverpool Right-Back Questions

Liverpool won, scored plenty and kept the tempo high, but the right-back issue remains unresolved. For the second match in a row, Andoni Iraola changed that side of the defence at half-time. Ronald Araujo made way again, this time after scoring with the last meaningful touch of the first half against Villarreal.

That naturally raised the obvious question, was it injury? Apparently not. Iraola made clear it was tactical, the same explanation he gave after the Brentford game. Fine. That does not make it any less significant.

Araujo spent much of the first half being dragged into uncomfortable areas. He was often narrow, sometimes effectively in central midfield, sometimes even pulled towards the left side as Villarreal worked space through the middle. It looked awkward because it was awkward. Liverpool were trying to deal with Alberto Moleiro finding pockets inside, and Araujo was the man asked to plug the gaps.

Liverpool Right-Back Role Still Unclear

Iraola explained the thinking clearly enough: “The first half they were in the middle, almost proper defensive midfielders with Moleiro coming inside. They were creating, And we decided Ryan as a right -back but covering those inside positions they were having in the first half a bit. Also being more of a threat.

“Ronald can be [a threat] as a right-back, but [Gravenberch could] connect more with Rio [Ngumoha]. We value Ryan a lot, we put him as a number 10, then as a right-back.”

The logic is understandable. The execution was mixed. Ryan Gravenberch gave Liverpool more composure on the ball and better links higher up, particularly with Rio Ngumoha. That helped the build-up and gave Liverpool another route forward.

Ryan Gravenberch Fix Looks Temporary

There was a cost. Gravenberch is not a natural defender and it showed at a key moment when he failed to track Tani Oluwaseyi at the back post for Villarreal’s third goal. That is the trade-off. You gain control and progression, you risk basic defensive errors.

For one half, it functioned as a stop-gap. For the bigger picture, it still looks like a patch rather than a solution. If Araujo is fit, and there has been no indication otherwise, he should be back for Brighton. Liverpool have found a workaround. They have not solved the problem.
