Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk says Reds should still be “full of confidence” despite losing 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last-sixteen clash in the Champions League.
Van Dijk and co conceded a sloppy early goal to Diego Simeone’s side and it was enough for the home team to cling onto for the remainder of the game.
There is now a three-week wait before the second leg at Anfield as Liverpool turn their attentions back to the Premier League and an FA Cup clash at Chelsea in that period.
Speaking to BT Sport after last night’s defeat, Van Dijk said:
“We knew it was going to be a proper battle tonight, especially here at their home ground with the fans behind them.
“Obviously it didn’t help that we conceded the goal from a corner, the first chance for them – not even a chance, a bit of luck. But it counts. It was tough.
“We had the ball most of the game but, unfortunately, we couldn’t create massive opportunities. But we still have another 90 minutes to set it straight and we should be full of confidence still.”
Liverpool have still never lost a two-legged European tie under Jurgen Klopp. We only need to look back to last season’s heroics against Barcelona in the semi-final for a reminder of what can happen at Anfield.
If Jurgen Klopp’s Reds can keep their winning streak going in the Premier League then the club’s 19th league title will be all but confirmed when Atleti arrive on Merseyside in mid-March. Then who would bet against Liverpool overturning a one-goal deficit in front of a pulsating Anfield crowd?
