Liverpool defender Joe Gomez believes The Reds will respond appropriately after suffering a rare defeat on Tuesday night at Atletico Madrid.
Jurgen Klopp’s side lost 1-0 after going behind to an early goal from Saul Niguez. The second leg will be at Anfield in three weeks as The Reds will be battling to protect their Champions League crown.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Gomez discussed the loss to Atleti and how it may impact the squad in the coming weeks:
“It’s disappointing and not something we’re used to.
“But if anything, it just gives us that motivation to bounce back and make it right as quickly as possible. Sometimes it happens and you need to take the positives from it.
“It gives us that hunger again – not that we didn’t have it but we just want to bounce back and make it right. That’s what we’ll try to do.”
After going ahead, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid then shut up shop with two banks of four sitting back to prevent any space in behind for Liverpool to exploit. Despite dominating possession, Klopp’s Reds could not create any clear-cut chances and failed to register a shot on target.
“Credit to them, they made it tough and difficult. We’ve just got to dust ourselves off and stay confident, it’s halfway so we’ve still got a chance to make it right at Anfield.
“We can take confidence from the way we dominated possession, especially in the second half. The chances will come. It’s not over, far from it.”
Next up for Liverpool is West Ham at Anfield on Monday night in the Premier League. Atletico Madrid arrive on Merseyside for the second leg of the Champions League clash in mid-March.
