Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp is reported to be interested in a surprise move for Aston Villa’s Scotland international midfielder John McGinn.
McGinn was one of the Villa players who apparently stood out for Klopp when Dean Smith’s side hammered Liverpool 7-2 at Villa Park last October.
James Pearce reports in his piece in The Athletic that Klopp sought out Andy Robertson to discuss McGinn’s ability in more detail. Robertson, of course, is McGinn’s international teammate with Scotland. The article states that ‘Manager Jurgen Klopp wanted to know whether John McGinn ever stopped running on a matchday.’
Liverpool could be looking to add to their midfield ranks following the departure of Gini Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
Aston Villa brought in Emi Buendía from Norwich and have set up a return to Villa Park for Ashley Young from Serie A’s Inter Milan. They are also rumoured to be after the signing of Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and are interested in Arsenal’s young talent Emile Smith Rowe.
Villa will not be under any pressure to let McGinn leave on the cheap, however. The midfielder signed a new five-year deal with the club just last December.
The Athletic piece adds that it would take an offer in the region of £45-50 million from Liverpool for Villa to even consider the possibility of letting McGinn go.
McGinn, who turns 27 in October, could be considered too ‘old’ when compared to the template Michael Edwards and co have used for other big-money Liverpool signings. It is also widely believed that Liverpool would need to sell to finance any significant incoming transfers this summer.
