Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane has urged the club to make a big money move for Newcastle United star Alexander Isak this summer.
The Reds are on course to win the Premier League title this season but will undergo a revamp at the end of the campaign with the futures of several players up in the air.
Manager Arne Slot is expected to shake up his attacking options and Keane believes that Isak would be the perfect fit for the Merseyside club.
“I can see Darwin Nunez leaving Liverpool in the summer – I think that’s inevitable,” Keane told Betway Insider. “If they can get a lot of money back for him, they’ll get rid.
“If you’re looking for a striker, I think Julian Alvarez is a top, top player, but he’s not a typical number nine. He can drop into that number nine role, but they already have Diogo Jota for that.
“Alvarez can certainly finish, but I would lean more towards Alexander Isak. He’s a number nine, he gets in behind, he’s quick and he can score goals.”
Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres has also recently been linked with Liverpool. He has scored 87 goals in 97 appearances since joining the Portuguese club from Coventry City in 2023.
The Swedish international reportedly fancies a move to Anfield this summer, but Keane is not certain he would replicate his goalscoring exploits in the English top-flight.
“Gyokeres played for my former club Coventry in the Championship,” Keane added. “He’s gone to Sporting and done well, but the Premier League is a different animal.
“I know he’s scoring a lot of goals, but the Premier League is such a tough league. I think he could do okay, but he must go to a club that would really suit him and the way he plays to be a success.”
Uncertainty over the futures of three of Liverpool’s top players has cast a shadow over the club’s bid to win the Premier League title for the second time.
Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all out of contract this summer and there has been plenty of speculation about each of them.
While Alexander-Arnold is close to agreeing a deal to join Real Madrid, the club has been working hard to agree new contracts with Salah and Van Dijk.
Keane acknowledged that Liverpool would ideally like to keep the trio but identified the latter pair as the ones they will be most eager to retain beyond this season.
“I’d be surprised if all three left, and I’m sure Liverpool are doing everything that they can to keep them,” Keane said.
“As to the one they would miss the most, you could make an argument for all three, really, but I think Salah’s goals and the numbers he provides are incredible.
“He’d obviously be a huge loss, but Van Dijk is also so important at the back so it’s a tough one to call.”
