Xabi Alonso Responds to Rumours of Liverpool Return

When Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool back in 2024, Xabi Alonso was one of the favourites to replace him in the Anfield dugout.

Whilst the Spaniard opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen one more year before heading to Real Madrid, the door is still slightly open to a remarkable return.

Arne Slot, despite winning the Premier League title in his debut season, is under immense pressure following a run of form that has seen the Reds win just four of their last 15 games across all competitions.

Alonso also finds himself under scrutiny in Madrid following the 2-0 home defeat to Celta Vigo on Sunday. The defeat leaves them four points behind league-leaders Barcelona.

Reports from Spain have suggested that another defeat to Man City in the Champions League on Wednesday could be enough to see the former midfielder sacked in a shock move.

Return to Liverpool?

Speaking ahead of the clash with Man City, Alonso was asked about the possibility of one day returning to Anfield as head coach.

“There’s a bond with Liverpool,” said Alonso, “Im in the place I want to be [at Real Madrid], but you never know what will happen in the future.”

With the current situation at both clubs, it’s certainly interesting for Alonso to leave the door open to a potential return to Anfield.

He isn’t the only name linked with the managerial job though with the likes of Como’s Cesc Fabregas, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and AFC Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola also under consideration.

That being said, I’m sure that Alonso would be the top choice for most Liverpool supporters.
