Isak Finds Sweden Spark After Liverpool Frustration

Alexander Isak has arrived at the World Cup carrying baggage from Liverpool, but, for now, Sweden are seeing the version of him that Anfield spent £125m hoping to inherit.

Isak has started the tournament brightly after a difficult first season with Liverpool. A goal and two assists in Sweden’s 5-1 win over Tunisia, followed by an assist in the 5-1 defeat to Holland, have at least changed the mood around a player whose club campaign never truly caught fire.

Sweden Focus Clears Isak’s Mind

Isak’s Liverpool season was messy. Four goals and one assist in 22 appearances was nowhere near the return expected after a British record move from Newcastle United. Fitness problems disrupted him, rhythm escaped him, and judgement came quickly.

With Sweden, though, the conversation is different. Isak says the two worlds are separate. As quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“Club team and national team are two very separate things. When I joined the national team, I had absolutely no thoughts about anything other than Sweden and the World Cup.

“It’s clear that it’s nice to have a good World Cup, and you want to do it even better all the time. I feel like I’m in a good place now. And hopefully I can continue to do well.

“Now I feel good, very good. But it’s hard to put your finger on what your maximum is, you never know. But I have nothing to complain about right now when it comes to my physical status.”

Liverpool Questions Remain

That physical line matters. Isak’s first 90-minute appearance in more than a year came against Tunisia, and that alone gives Liverpool something to cling to. The talent was never really the issue. The concern was availability, sharpness and whether his body could withstand the demands of Premier League football.

For Liverpool, the World Cup offers both reassurance and frustration. Reassurance because Isak looks fresher, sharper and more involved. Frustration because this version appeared too rarely during his debut season at Anfield.

Gyokeres Partnership Offers Clues

His work with Viktor Gyokeres has also been intriguing. Isak has played in a slightly deeper role, connecting attacks rather than constantly running beyond defenders.

“It’s felt good. It’s worked well in the matches. It’s clear that you’re a bit more of a playmaker, playing others forward instead of being the one making the deep runs yourself. But I’m enjoying it there.

“We are two talented players who want the best for the team. We get along really well, just like the whole team.”

That may interest Liverpool. If Isak can operate between lines, link play and still arrive in dangerous areas, his value to Andoni Iraola becomes more layered.

Anfield Patience Still Needed

Liverpool supporters will naturally wonder whether this Sweden form can travel back to Merseyside. One strong World Cup group stage does not erase a poor season, nor should it define his future.

Yet Isak sounds calm, fit and free of the noise that followed him at club level. For Liverpool, that might be the most encouraging part of all.
