Welcome Break - Scouser Tommies

Welcome Break - Scouser Tommies

The international break might have taken proper football away, but it’s not stopped Jim Boardman and Jay Reid from finding stuff to talk about for this week’s Scouser Tommies. Plenty to look forward to, as the League season gets back going again this Easter weekend after being so rudely interrupted, and for Liverpool it starts with the visit of Brighton. A huge game for the Reds, especially when you look at the fixture taking place after full-time at Anfield. Since the last episode there has been one game to forget, the FA Cup game down the East Lancs, but, as Jay and Jim say, as gutting as it felt at the time, that disappointment was more about who it was against than what the result really meant. For once the break might have done us a favour. With a certain sports ‘news’ channel seemingly putting something slightly less impressive than Coventry did the day before on a par with solving world hunger, it was best to avoid the papers and all national sports outlets for the week. Stick to the safety of your favourite LFC fan media. Especially when realising that those national outlets would soon be shelving their Manc love-in to fawn over everything Ingerland.  Sadly, the evil Nike corporation did something so evil that, no matter how hard you tried to avoid it, sooner or later you were bound to hear about the UK’s national team (or so it always seems, fans of the other UK national sides must think). The outcry over the colour of a cross on the back of an overpriced shirt was quite bemusing to watch from the sides for anyone who cares like Jim, Jay and pretty much all of Liverpool do. Of course it’s all Nike’s fault, it’s not like England’s FA get any say in the shirts they make so much money from.  Talking of money and blaming the wrong people, more progress was reported on the Everton takeover, although nothing exactly official which makes you wonder if anything is actually going to happen. The Premier League have (reportedly) said they are “minded to allow” the deal to go through, based on a number of conditions that effectively add up to demanding 777 put their money where their mouth is. Jay and Jim are kind of astounded at how long it’s all taken, at why 777 haven’t just got the deal done and taken Everton out of limbo if they’re good for the cash, at how much debt Everton are now in, at how that compares to what FSG paid to buy LFC not that long ago, and at how it’s all the Premier League’s fault. Only kind of astounded though, of course, this is Everton. This week: • Look ahead to LFC v Brighton • One game at a time but the start of an important run of games • Dangerous opponents, but surely we’ve learned that by now? • International break – how have Reds players fared? • How many will be coming back with new injuries? • Robbo is one, we await news of a scan, but are we as worried about him missing as we used to be? • Plenty of goals from Reds on their travels • Brief look back at the FA Cup exit • We’re over it now, but what can we learn from it? • Maybe get better at turning control and possession into goals? • The reaction to that game laughable, do they know it wasn’t the final? • The reaction to England’s shirt laughable, do they know it’s only a shirt that will soon be replaced by another?  • Do the leaders of the main political parties have nothing more important to try and get fixed?  • Everton’s takeover – what will happen if it doesn’t go through, and soon? • Would we miss them? • LFC Legends game – great to see Sven given such a memorable moment. • Could Liverpool do one more thing for him? • Premier League Hall of Fame – two ex-Reds nominated. • One an obvious pick for Reds fans, we’re not sure we could vote for the other • Maybe a mural means more anyway Learn more about your ad choices. Big Decisions- Part 1

Big Decisions- Part 1

Trev Downey and Dave Davis take on four major topics which may require some decisive action from Liverpool Football Club in the weeks and months to come. 1) PGMOL incompetence - should the club do anything? 2) Have LFC got City rattled and how can that potential psychological advantage be exploited? 3) How can the club make lemonade from the lemons of the FA Cup exit? 4) With the incoming Edwards/Hughes/New Manager regime what will the club do about the contracts of VVD, Salah and Trent? I often try to avoid most pundits nowadays, as I struggle to make sense of the drivel spouted. I do sometimes enjoy the bluntness of Roy Keane and Graeme Souness, and the banter between Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville was initially entertaining. BT Sport is currently employing the worst group of analysts going, and their […]

I would be surprised if any Liverpool player had ever been labeled as for sale whilst under the watch of Jürgen Klopp. Often times a player likely to leave will be lauded for their importance, just prior to their sale. With a strong start to this summer transfer window, there are now more questions than […]

Any transition period is an inevitable topic in everyday speech among fans as potential reinforcements for their team, whether it is a summer or winter transition period. The fact is that during the summer there are usually bigger and sound transfers, although there are also during the winter transition period. The transfer deadline this summer […]

In this period of Liverpool brilliance, the common notion within the reds fan base is that reinforcements are needed. Nearby rivals Manchester City will continue to be superb, and ways must be unearthed to keep pace. The sports washing (as Dave Hendrick calls it) Etihad team cannot be bullied financially, therefore an exceptional transfer strategy […]

The BBC recently ran a survey inviting Liverpool fans to select their all-time Liverpool XIs. It’s always intriguing to see how much these sorts of exercises are swayed by present-day players. Probably there are some whose memories don’t extend beyond the past couple of games, while for others, no modern-day achievements will ever knock childhood […]

Once you read this wait 24 hours. I’d bet cold hard cash another discussion or thread exists about Liverpool, Jude Bellingham or something midfield related. The popular line that the club are briefing local journos is that ‘we’ll wait till 2023 before looking at midfield re-enforcements. A social media meltdown aside, that task if true […]

Liverpool missed out on the Premier League title again last month by a margin of a single point. It was a painful sense of déjà vu for most reds fans who also witnessed Klopp’s men miss out to Manchester City by just a solitary point at the end of the 2018/19 season too. However, unlike […]

The 2022/23 Premier League season is just weeks away and Liverpool are once again expected to be Manchester City’s closest contender for the title. We’ve gone head-to-head with City in recent years and there is no reason to think it won’t be another two-horse race this season.  The current Liverpool and City teams are two […]

Sadio Mane was the foundational piece of a puzzle that culminated in the greatest Liverpool team I have ever seen; I never thought Kenny’s 1988 side would be bettered, it has, and with interest on top! The sustainable model FSG use with LFC means they are to some extent cheating the system, whilst cumulatively the […]

This week Darwin Núñez signed as a Liverpool player, in a deal that could eventually reach £85m. The guaranteed outlay is around the £63m mark (£20m upfront), and if the full fee is to be paid to Benfica, then that would be a mark of extreme success by the player. The cost is of course […]
