SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. The Case for Xherdan Shaqiri

Following an impressive start to their summer with the signing of Fabinho and the impending arrival of Naby Keita, Liverpool have looked to bolster what was their most glaring weakness of the season, shining brightly in the eyes of every fan who watched their side go down to Real Madrid in Kiev. A lack of...

Hakim Ziyech Would be the Perfect Response to the Fekir Transfer Saga

If Liverpool’s pursuit of Fabinho was an old-school signing, bereft of a long drawn out process with a strangely anticlimactic moment at the end, Fekir was a good old-fashioned transfer saga. From rumour to confirmation in under two hours, Michael Edwards wrapped up a deal for the defensive midfielder without any complications. The pursuit of...

Liverpool FC – Getting Smarter

Liverpool football club is not at the top of the transfer food chain. It's an unpleasant fact but we need to accept it. There are clubs that are richer, stronger and can offer guarantees that LFC just can't. So it's natural that some players will use the famous red jersey as a stepping stone...

Alternative Fekirs: Where should Liverpool turn to next?

It was definitely going to be Thursday, then absolutely Friday, then without question Saturday… but at 8pm Saturday night, the Nabil Fekir saga came to an abrupt halt. Depending on which party you believe, Liverpool had reservations once they had the opportunity to review the details of Fekir’s knee reconstructions from two years prior...

LFC 2017/2018 Player Ratings – Part 2

After rating the defence, now it's time for midfield and attack. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - Average Post-match Rating 6.63, Writers' Season Rating 7.5 The Ox had a slow start to his Liverpool career, appearing mainly as a substitute in the begging of the season. He grew to be our best midfielder as the season progressed before being...

Trust Michael Edwards – He’s Smarter Than Us

It’s been a very strange and very fraught weekend for Liverpool fans. The timeline is sketchy, details are even sketchier but on Thursday night, it was announced that Liverpool had wrapped up a deal with Nabil Fekir. On Friday morning, Lyon denounced that, and rumours flooded that Fekir had failed his medical. Those rumours...

Why Alberto Moreno Shouldn’t be Liverpool’s Second Choice Left-Back

Despite a strong start to the season last time out, Alberto Moreno finds himself as Liverpool’s second choice left-back - largely through no fault of his own. Our flying Scotsman, Andy Robertson, has been everything we’ve dreamt our left-back would be for the past six years. He’s solid defensively, positionally sound and poses a...

Liverpool FC 17/18: Player Ratings by AI Writers – Part 1

The season is over. It ended just two weeks ago but seems like a lot more. LFC isn't giving us any time to look back: the Champions League final, Fabinho, concussions, Fekir, sir Kenny... Before everything seems even more distant the Anfield index writers collaborated on giving each player's season a rating. The average...

Liverpool’s Encouraging Transfer Market Motions

The summer transfer window remains in its infancy but already there is cause for excitement as Liverpool look to wrap up their summer business in alarmingly swift fashion. Jürgen Klopp wants his squad complete by the time it convenes for pre-season training at the beginning of July and if the club's present efforts to address...

A Flight Tracking Guide for Liverpool ITKs

Trees in their full viridian pomp, flowers bursting into bloom; these are the first indications that summer is finally upon us. Signs that the summer transfer window is in full swing are a little more subtle. TheFirm waking up from his winter hibernation, sending his first tweets of the season... How Klopp Could Unleash the Big Guns in the 4-2-2-2

A manager requires perpetual change if he’s to succeed in the savage land that is the Premier League. That’s the narrative that gets swung about on the regular, amidst pundits and fans alike. In Pep Guardiola’s first season, his tactical ministrations were seen as too imposing, not giving English Football’s top tier its due. Jose...

Mascherano to Fabinho: The Long-Awaited Revival of the Defensive Midfielder

Some players are real bastards of the game, plying their trade with the kind of snide and underhanded disregard of the rules that causes outright fury from opposition fans. (See Sergio Ramos for details). Yet, they’re also the type of player you desperately want in your team. A player who’d go the extra mile, commit...

Priceless Sadio Mane Must Not Go Unloved at Liverpool

Football moves at a relentless pace. It only takes a string of good or bad performances to completely alter an opinion on a team or a player, with the modern game as knee-jerk as it has ever been. When it comes to Sadio Mane, this definitely applies, even though any sane Liverpool supporter knows full well...

Karius’ concussion reflects lack of knowledge and awareness over head injuries

It may have little standing on the Champions League final result, but news of Loris Karius suffering a concussion during a clash with Sergio Ramos in Kiev reflects far more pressing problems within football. Van Dijk and Sergio Ramos had a coming together from a Madrid corner before the Spaniard was sent hurtling towards the...

Loris Karius: Inside the Mind of a Goalkeeper

Recently, I found myself reviewing my notes for my FA level 1 coaching course, and came across the FA's "Four Corner Model" of long-term player development. In the four corners are "Technical/Tactical", "Physical", "Social" and, lastly, "Psychological". Very often, we focus on the technical/tactical and physical aspects of the game when we look at...

Only One Goalkeeper Makes Sense for Liverpool

With the Liverpool fanbase in resounding agreement over the sudden need to upgrade the goalkeeper position who is the player to take the number-one kit for the next ten years? https://twitter.com/jeramye/status/1000466433879478274 KNOW WHEN TO HOLD ‘EM The Reds are in need of a ‘keeper clear-out, but that shouldn’t include Loris Karius, especially after the news of the...

Roberto Firmino Unfazed by Gabriel Jesus Rivalry for Brazil Starting Spot

The Brazilian footballer Roberto Firmino has said that he has no issues on being used as a backup for his fellow teammate Gabriel Jesus when Brazil start up with their FIFA World Cup journey from 17 June. All the rivalry revolves around the fact that both Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Jesus are the two...

Fabinho and Fekir Perfect For Klopp’s Versatile Reds

I hate starting any article about Liverpool with a comparison to Man United. But sometimes an opportunity presents itself for such a stark comparison and it gets stuck in your head to the point where it’s impossible to avoid. So indulge me for a moment. When talking to a United fan recently (I know), he...

Klopp’s Liverpool Untitled… For Now

Some will say this Liverpool team failed, that they stalled at the final hurdle. Ending another exhilarating campaign with nothing to show for it, Klopp’s failure to win in six straight finals may be a source of humour for rival fans. It may even have some fans questioning whether his tenure has truly been...

Five Potential Attackers to Backup Liverpool’s Main Men

Christian Pulisic Dortmund’s American sensation, Christian Pulisic has been on the radar of Liverpool (and Klopp) for a while now. Just nineteen and already laboured with shouldering the burdens of club and country, he’s certainly got experience beyond his years. Still raw and unrefined, Pulisic’s sublime dribbling ability is the first thing that stands out whenever...

Why Liverpool Should Court Courtois in a Chelsea Fire-Sale

Chelsea fans have had quite a storm blowing their way over the last few months, haven't they? A manager in disarray over his future after coming nowhere near to defending his league title and an owner refused a visa to the country that his club operates in. An FA Cup win managed to push the storm...

Fabinho and Keita: Here Comes The Snide

I can't help but begrudgingly respect Sergio Ramos. There, I said it. It's possibly the worst thing you can say as a Liverpool supporter right now, but rather than childishly sign petitions and cry-arse about his behaviour, I find myself admiring him. I know we’re meant to hate the horrible Spaniard for what he did to...

Liverpool FC – No Longer Standing Still

As the dust settles on an emotional week for Liverpool supporters, it's almost hard to believe that it began with the heartbreak of seeing our Champions League Final hopes washed away in a flood of tears. Those of Mohamed Salah, cruelly robbed of his chance to shine on the biggest stage in club football,...

Liverpool’s Premier League Lineups – a Stats Analysis: Part 2

In part 1 of the lineup analysis, I had a look at our goalkeepers and defense. Part 2 will focus on midfield and attack. The midfield Even after Karius' nightmare performance in Kiev, the midfield is still Liverpool's weakest line going into 2018/2019. Emre Can is likely leaving, James Milner will be 33, Jordan Henderson is...

My Late Father and Liverpool

Being a Liverpool fan, I’ve fallen out of love with the game more times than I can count. Between marginally losing the league in 2008/09, and again in 2013/14, to seeing some of the icons I grew up supporting and adoring leaving the club one-by-one – who could blame me, right? This time, however,...

Liverpool’s Premier League Lineups – A Stats Analysis: Part 1

The Premier League season is over. Man City dominated the season like no club has done in recent (and not so recent) times. For Liverpool, the campaign was relatively successful with the team managing to qualify for the Champions League for the second straight time - something that hasn't happened since a certain Spaniard...

Liverpool FC Follows the Spirit of the Age

In all likelihood, there probably aren’t many people who doubt that electronic sports will play a crucial part in the development of the modern entertainment industry. It will probably influence other sectors as well. While it is too soon to tell what the future of sports will look like, there is no reason why...

Scouting Fabinho: Liverpool’s New Anchor

Monday Night – UK time: Liverpool fans still reel from their Champions League final loss, yet they are motivated in their club’s resolve to use it as the platform for progress; a bump on the road to something special. Nobody quite knew just how quickly the Reds would get moving on that road, though. As...

Fabinho Done – Faster Than A Speeding Edwards

It’s two days after the Champions League final and the dissection of the game has barely even ended. The discussion, as these discussions are wont to do, turns to the state of Liverpool’s squad after what has been a very exciting but ultimately unsuccessful season – at least in terms of silverware. As heated debates...

The Forgotten Talking Points | From The Champions League Final

I've waited a good 36 hours since the full-time whistle to write this - in part to compose my own thoughts and in part to have time to listen to the reactions of the players, pundits and supporters. While the Reds' journey to Kiev ended in abject misery, the road there was glorious. I'm...
