Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Liverpool midfielder Naby Keïta was labelled a "top, top player" today by Reds boss Jürgen Klopp after the Guinea international helped break the deadlock against a stubborn Aston Villa defence. Keïta played 85 minutes of the 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Villa at Anfield, laying on the assist for Sadio Mané's opening goal. When asked at his...

Liverpool’s Relegated Player Transfer Roulette

Liverpool have already felt the brunt of the financial pinch caused by the ongoing pandemic. Long linked with Timo Werner, the Reds -- who were either unwilling or unable to match the financial package on offer in West London -- were beaten to the signing of the German international by Chelsea. The prevailing sense, as suggested...

Iconic Moments From A Season To Remember

Premier League Champions. Only we know how as a collective fanbase we've longed to hear those beautiful words. Everything about the manner in which the title was finally secured spells out poetic. Six years ago our title hopes were obliterated with a disappointing draw at Palace and a loss to Chelsea at home. Willian hammered...

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa: Who Was Man of the Match?

Liverpool banked yet another 3 points at Anfield after a very lacklustre 2-0 victory over Aston Villa. Until Mané put the Reds in front in the 70th minute, we failed to create any chance of note whatsoever, with Villa looking the more likely to break the deadlock with numerous dangerous counterattacks. A win is...

But what were the key stats from another dross game in Liverpool’s title procession? Naby. Lad. Liverpool’s attacking display was efficient rather than explosive. Only...

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa: Player ratings as Reds lift their game to secure three points

Liverpool's hopes of ending the season with a 100% Premier League record at Anfield are still alive after they sparked themselves into life against Aston Villa. It was a lethargic, disjointed display for over an hour, but the slickest move of the match brought a breakthrough for Sadio Mane before Curtis Jones' first league goal...

Liverpool Bounce Back With Unconvincing Win

Liverpool continued their 100% winning streak in the Premier League this season with a hard fought 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield. Goals from Sadio Mane and Curtis Jones gave the Reds a perhaps flattering win after a stodgy performance against their relegation-threatened visitors. After their drubbing at Manchester City, there was an expectation of...

Appreciating the brilliance of game-changing Alisson

The last 20 minutes of last year's Champions League final are easy to forget, barring Divock Origi's trophy-clinching goal in the dying embers. It was a match to fall asleep to for the neutral, with little happening for vast chunks of proceedings, as Liverpool showed their experience and outmaneuvered an ineffective Tottenham side. In hindsight, however,...

Henderson and Point Scoring

Social media can be a strange place. In the wake of Liverpool being crowned champions, some fans have used this as a point-scoring opportunity. They’re trawling back through the years to find tweets calling for FSG to sell up. They’ve found plenty of tweets criticising players as well. There are probably even some who...

Timeless Melody

Liverpool and the music scene are inextricably linked. Music and football too are the closest of bedfellows. Liverpool F.C. is synonymous with song and musical theatre through the medium of Gerry Marsden's anthem; the famous rolling strains of the song from Carousel and those iconic words of love and support, You'll Never Walk Alone. It is far...

Manchester City 4-0 Liverpool: Observations from a night to forget

For Liverpool, Thursday's trip to the Etihad peaked before it had even begun. The side who had come out on top last season in the most agonising circumstances were reduced to rolling out the red carpet for the most dominant champions in Premier League history as they took to the field. The final score was...

Time for Liverpool to kick on

The very best teams don’t sit on their laurels. The very best teams don’t let winning slow them down. This Liverpool team have already demonstrated that to an extent. They took the valour of winning last year’s Champions League trophy and used that to push them on to an unprecedented Premier League performance, securing the...

Drunk, sober or hungover? How Liverpool rated in the 4-0 loss to Manchester City!

Hahaha, you wouldn't actually believe how pleased I was when that stoppage time Riyad Mahrez goal was ruled out by VAR. I don't know about you, reader, but 5-0 looks so much worse than 4-0. You're halfway to ten goals at 5-0 up! Anyway, here's my first ratings piece since Liverpool were declared champions. In...

Limp Liverpool Mauled By City

Liverpool's title party was brought to an abrupt end after they were walloped 4-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad. Goals from Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, and an Alex Oxlade Chamberlain own goal condemned the full-strength, yet at times shambolic Reds to a heavy defeat. Despite some good chances, the visitors --...

Reflecting on August’s error of judgement

"Part of me can't help but think that the side that beat us to win the league by a point have strengthened while we've stood still." That's what I tweeted on 7 August 2019. Manchester City had just broken the bank for a big-name full-back again, this time Juventus' Joao Cancelo. Earlier in the summer,...

Cavani Liverpool’s Werner Alternative?

The ongoing global pandemic has already had a big impact on football finances. With games returning behind closed doors, clubs have been deprived of matchday revenues, in terms of hospitality, ticket sales, and other streams of income, such as club shop sales. Additionally, and more impactfully, television rebates — even given the fact they have...

Liverpool’s Title Charge: Three Games the Reds Should Be Defensively Wary Of

Built on Emotion, Yet Ruthlessly Executed

Somehow, it was inevitable that it ended this way. Not with a roar that had been pent up for thirty years, not with a glorious cavalcade, not even in front of any fans. In fact, there weren’t even any red shirts on the pitch at the end of the ninety minutes that confirmed Liverpool as...

Liverpool’s Joël Matip out for the remainder of the season with foot injury

Title-Winning Liverpool the Best for Decades

Well they did it. It’s over. Liverpool were officially labelled Premier League Champions as Man City slipped up at Chelsea, losing 2-1 and giving Liverpool a 23 point lead with seven games to go. This is the first time in my lifetime I’ve seen Liverpool win the title and for many of you it’s likely either...

Bukayo Saka: A Potential Liverpool Target

As much as you could learn next to nothing from Liverpool's return to football from their pandemic hiatus in the drab 0-0 Merseyside derby draw at Goodison Park -- a game played with the tempo of a pre-season friendly -- it did reaffirm something that many of their fans knew: The Reds need a...
