The Transfer Show: Defensive Targets Vanishing as Liverpool Wait

As Liverpool delay major recruitment until the summer, Trev Downey and Dave Davis examine the danger of watching defensive targets slip away. From Guéhi’s move to Manchester City to Chelsea’s pursuit of Jacquet, they discuss how the market is thinning rapidly. The conversation covers Liverpool’s interest in Van de Ven and Bastoni, concerns over price, injuries and tactical fit, and the unresolved futures of Konaté and Robertson. This cut highlights the risk of entering the summer needing multiple defenders in a market where elite options are already being removed. Learn more about your ad choices. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. Liverpool 2 – 0 Rangers – CL Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 7.0 The weekends man of the (reds) match. He was made to deal with some tricky back-passes early on, but did enough to make sure he wasn’t caught out. Had a busier spell late on, but was determined to keep them at bay. Trent Alexander-Arnold - 8.0 Kept his place despite some poor form,...

Liverpool v Rangers – Time To Unleash Darwin

Liverpool’s hugely disappointing start to the campaign continued at the weekend, with a 3-3 draw at home to Brighton. Brighton are an impressive outfit this season, and that coupled with the annoying international break could perhaps explain some of the reds weekend inconsistencies. The main concern however, is Liverpools continued inability to play through...

Is there any chance of Liverpool winning the league?

Before the commencement of the English Premier League for 2022/2023, there was an element of the unknown about Liverpool’s performances. Again, under the managership of the German coach, Jurgen Klopp, the team lost the services of Sadio Mane, who moved on to play in Germany for Bayern Munich. To compensate for the loss of...

Liverpool FC 3 – 3 Brighton – Player Ratings

Starters: Alisson - 8 Week after week we rely on him, and he does his job. Trossard’s finishing becomes his problem, but for conceding three in a home match, you can’t ask for much more from the Brazilian keeper. Trent - 5 Let's Trossard turn him for the opener, which matches the tone of the season thus far...

Is Jude Bellingham worth £130million?

Jude Bellingham is the most sought-after player in world football right now. Borussia Dortmund know this and it is no doubt why they now believe the England international is worth in excess of £130million.  If they managed to get such a fee for the box-to-box midfielder, he would be their most expensive export, surpassing the...

Almost one month from their last Premier League outing, Liverpool will welcome the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon, eyeing up a much-needed three points. Is it Bellingham or bust for Liverpool?

Liverpool want Jude Bellingham.  Every man and their dog knows this. Throughout the summer months we’ve had journalists describe the type of midfielder the Reds are after in 2023 and it probably would’ve been easier just to mention him by name. It is clear that he is the player they have in mind. Then there is...

Trent Alexander Arnold – A World Class Footballer

I read this morning how Trent Alexander-Arnold has been omitted from the England squad for the Germany game. I was neither surprised nor worried by the fact, as a mediocre manager (Gareth Southgate) has clearly settled on other options. Kyle Walker, Reece James & Kieran Tripper are all ahead of Trent in the Three...

Which Liverpool Players Should Enter Into The Next Phase

It’s international week, and unless it’s a major summer competition, I rarely pay any attention to the results and performances. The games usually revolve around occasions of no consequence, uneven match ups, silly qualification games, and a raft of ever-changing line ups. I checked on Monday to see whether the international break was over,...

Betting tips for Liverpool fans

Liverpool is a beautiful and culturally significant city in the UK. Even in a country with some of the most historically influential cities in the world, Liverpool can shine through on its own. This is due to its architectural and musical legacy, its vital role in the modernisation of Great Britain during the Industrial...

Liverpool must continue to adapt and overcome

There’s no doubt about it, this will probably be one of the most atypical seasons in modern football history. Due to the unusual intervention of a World Cup being played in the winter months, the Premier League fixture list is now at its most compact, while the schedule in European competitions is equally compressed. In...

The Influence of Liverpool FC in the United States

There has long been a link between Liverpool F.C. (LFC) and the US, with stars like Tommy Smith playing in the US and for the Anfield club as far back as the 1970s. However, since Fenway Sports Group (FSG) purchased the club in October 2010, the links between LFC and FSG’s homeland have strengthened...

How To Replicate The Genius Thiago Brings

Steven Gerrard & Luis Suárez are Liverpool’s most notable legends of the recent past, and were players that were often relied upon to propel their respective team to greatness. Though Luis actually played with Stevie for the entirety of the Uruguayan's Anfield stay, Gerrard was at that point far from the powerhouse he once...

Liverpool 2 – 1 Ajax – Player Ratings

Liverpool 2 - 1 Ajax - Player Ratings Alisson Becker - 7.0 Great ball for the first goal, and looked assured from the outset. Great distribution and couldn’t do nothing for the opening goal. Had a good steady game. Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7.0 Looked bright & determined from the start. Lost his man for their opening goal, and...

How This Period Can Recalibrate The Reds

I work in mechanical engineering, and it means I often have to use various devices in order to test that which requires inspection. Having been in the industry for close to 25 years, I’m pretty aware when something isn’t quite right, and how to adjust. In order to maintain certain levels, pretty much all...

Could Liverpool FC be developed even further as a brand

Liverpool Football Club is one of the biggest clubs in the world both in terms of past success and current as well as future sustained success. Liverpool has accrued a huge fanbase and is, therefore, a huge brand. Liverpool has club stores all over the globe meaning their merchandise can be purchased directly from the club...

Napoli 4 – 1 Liverpool – Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 2.0 Could do little with the surging ways Napoli came out, and both the two opening goals were clinical, though the second maybe he could have done better. Was hopelessly let down by some of his players. Was poor for the fourth, and even the penalty save couldn’t hide a bad game. Trent...

Napoli v Liverpool – Wednesday Night Lights

I’m not the biggest American Football fan, but can appreciate and enjoy various facets of the game. For me, it’s very much like my casual viewing of the NBA, where I can watch the odd game without the fear of emotion engulfing me. The same cannot be said of my allegiance to Liverpool FC....

Why Europe Can Offer A Much Needed Distraction

Six games in, and the Liverpool progress has been at best irregular. With a summer transfer window posing as many questions as answers, it has become a worried fanbase very quickly. When we lost to Man United, that was a low that was quickly reacted to. In the past week we have seen a...

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly From Liverpool VS Everton

Well that wasn't good now, was it? Everton 0-0 Liverpool. For the fourth time in six games, Liverpool dropped points. The Reds now sit six points off the top of the table despite having had a very favourable run of games in this opening phase of the season. Liverpool have problems right now. They're not playing...

Liverpool 0 – 0 Everton – Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 9.0 Both keepers came away with plenty of praise, and kept the clean sheets intact for each opposing side. Ali was big, and made some key saves to ensure Liverpool stayed in the hunt for victory. His importance is critical, but perhaps a little worrying how reliant we were. Man of the match. Trent...

Liverpool’s Disjointed Attack

The game against Bournemouth was the first time this season that Liverpool had been able to get Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah involved properly.   Prior to that, the wide forward pairing had struggled to influence proceedings on a consistent basis. Diaz, for example, had taken seven shots in his three Premier League appearances. Across matches...

What sort of midfielders do Liverpool need?

Liverpool need a midfielder. This is no surprise, secret or revelation.  But there is a big difference between a midfielder and a midfielder suited to Liverpool. There are plenty of midfielders in the world. There are few who are good enough to improve Jurgen Klopp’s middle third. However, one thing that isn’t being discussed in...

Liverpool v Newcastle – Its Time To Remind People

Liverpool v Newcastle - Its Time To Remind People Arsenal currently sit top of the league, and have had a quite lovely start to their own league season. Brighton are perched nicely within the top 4, and whereas one set of these fans know what this means, the other would have you believe they are...

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly from Liverpool vs Bournemouth

Well that was one way to bounce back after a terrible start to the season. Having dropped seven points in their first three games, Liverpool took Bournemouth to the cleaners on Saturday afternoon at Anfield. A joint Premier League record victory of 9-0 had Anfield on its feet as last season's runners up showed...

Key Stats as Liverpool get first win of the season

What a lovely palate cleanser. After the horror of the first 3 games of the season, the Reds were able to let out a big exhale of tension with a record-matching victory of nine goals over Bournemouth. But what were the Key Stats as Klopp's men put the Cherries to the sword? Goals Goals Goals Liverpool...
