The Transfer Show: Slot, Alonso and Liverpool’s Summer Crossroads

Trev Downey and Dave Davis assess the growing pressure on Arne Slot and why the Burnley draw became such a pivotal moment in the fan narrative. They explore how Xabi Alonso’s availability is shaping supporter opinion, the divide between UK-based reporting and European speculation, and why Liverpool appear determined to wait until the summer before making any managerial decision. This segment looks at belief, risk and whether Liverpool are prepared to hold their nerve while the noise around the dugout continues to grow. Learn more about your ad choices. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. My Greatest Liverpool Match

I was born on 12/11/81, so have been fortunate enough to witness some truly magnificent games as a Liverpool fan. The opinions and preferences are far reaching, and the glorious fact is that Liverpool FC continues to offer brilliance as a football club. To look at singular games, I can easily think of marvellous matchups...

How To Approach The Transfer Window

As the next international window begins, more and more players will be heading off to represent their specific countries. The amount of players that will be returning in a state of good fitness, is as ever, unpredictable. Liverpool have undertaken this first stage of the season with as many questions as answers. Some games and...

West Ham 3 – 2 Liverpool – The Player Ratings

West Ham 3 - 2 Liverpool - The Player Ratings Alisson Becker - 5.0 A poor game by this mans standards, couldn’t deal with the physical nature within the box and wasn’t commanding at all. These games will happen, but he’s world class and can’t be elite every game. Trent Alexander Arnold - 6.5 A tough game overall,...

The Most Outstanding Liverpool Players in Club History

Doubtlessly, Liverpool FC is one of the most successful football clubs. The Reds have a ton of awards. It has a rich history that implies a lot of remarkable events. Not all of them helped the team achieve success in the international arena. However, it's an unarguable fact that Liverpool FC is a club...

Steven Gerrard & The Ballon d’Or

With Liverpool now fielding a rotating cast of midfielders, it’s going raise the subject once more as to who Liverpool may sign in the next window. The reality is that no midfielder will probably arrive until next summer, when James Milner is poised to leave the club. There are certain avenues that can be...

Using Liverpool’s Best in the Fantasy Premier League

Liverpool currently lies second in the Premier League table. Jürgen Klopp’s Reds are three points behind Chelsea and two ahead of Manchester City who are third. They have scored 29 goals in their opening 10 league games, an average of almost three goals per game. That is a hugely impressive tally from a sample...

Liverpool 2 – 0 Atletico Madrid – The Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 7.0 I hope he enjoyed the show. The disallowed goal was one of his few moments in a quiet game. Trent Alexander Arnold - 9.5 The best right back in world football continues to show his amazing talent and outrageous delivery. Two assists and a brilliant setting of game tempo in the first half,...

Time To Welcome Simeone

Diego Simeone is one of the world's most important and impressive managers. His tenure as Atletico Madrid boss is simply sensational, and his want to win is perhaps unmatched in world football. If Liverpool are to remain relevant on the European stage, they must accept and relish this Argentinian as an enemy to overcome,...

Liverpool FC in the Football World

Liverpool FC is one of the most renowned football clubs that have made British football famous worldwide. Fans are well aware of all the titles the team has won since 1892. However, it's worth noting that Liverpool FC has experienced ups and downs but never stopped and was always looking for new trophies. Here...

A Jekyll and Hyde Midfield

I have written more about Gini Wijnaldum this season than last. His off ball intelligence was so understated, he could glide through games merely taking up good positions, and aiding the system with pure intelligence. His ability to help shield a solid defence, made that defence one of the best in Europe, and his...

Liverpool Have Looked Great, But Not Like Champions Yet

Before the season started, I predicted that Liverpool would finish in third behind Manchester City and Chelsea. It was clear that, with our first-team centre-backs fit again and the structure of the team restored as a result, we'd compete for the title, but I did think we'd ultimately fall short. Ten Premier League games into...

Liverpool vs Brighton – Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 7.5 So dominant and was once again important to his team. The first goal was pin point precision in it’s trajectory, and would’ve been tough to stop even if not lost in the sun. Trent Alexander Arnold - 6.0 An unsure performance. A new inside centre back (Konate) and the ever revolving midfield...

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez conundrum

The centre-back situation  Last season, Liverpool had no centre-backs. Now, the Reds allegedly have too many.  According to a report, albeit not the most reliable ones, Joe Gomez isn’t happy with his situation at Anfield. The 24-year-old is yet to start in the Premier League this term and the majority of his minutes have arrived in...

But when it comes to substantial sports payouts one of the most iconic instances happened in 2005, in Istanbul. The Value...

Liverpool’s Momentum Is Key

The season rolls on, and Liverpool are yet to taste defeat in any competition thus far. A quarter final place in the League Cup, a top place position in their Champions League group, and a second place berth in the Premier League represents a superb start to the season. With a home game against Brighton...

We need to talk about Divock Origi

How does Divock Origi do it?  If you piece together a highlight reel made up of all of his best moments, he’d look like one of the best players ever to put on a Liverpool shirt. There are world-class finishes amongst memorable moments that will never be forgotten.  His goal against Preston was outrageous, yet somehow...

Joe Gomez – Patience Is A Virtue

What a difference a few months make. The majority of last season saw Liverpool’s central defenders fall away, in an horrific series of season ending injuries. Once Dejan Lovren and Ki-Jana Hoever were sold last summer, it was predictable that the failure to recruit, in defence, would come back to bite the reds. That...

How To Approach The Cups

Domestic cup wins are a glorious building block for success, though only if your team is blessed with a squad to cope. We have seen Manchester City consistently able to achieve cup wins (in recent years), whilst maintaining both strong League and European campaigns. The issue is never the desire to lose in the...

Naby Keïta – Imagine The Levels

Steven Gerrard is perhaps the greatest number 8 in Liverpool’s history. This week or next I’ll be taking a look at how this footballing colossus would have translated under a Jürgen Klopp regime. It is something that would have been a joy to behold, and the attacking force of nature would be almost unplayable...

Manchester United 0 – 5 Liverpool – Player Ratings

Manchester United 0 - 5 Liverpool - Player Ratings Alisson Becker - 7.5 Probably needed the rest, would have enjoyed what he saw ahead of him. Trent Alexander Arnold - 8.5 Strode around the park with authority and a real swagger. He was able to control tempo and orchestrate both attacking, and possession based patterns of play. Andy Robertson...

How Will Klopp & Ole Approach Sunday’s Game

Whether or not Sunday’s game versus Manchester United is still viewed as Liverpool’s biggest game can be debated. Manchester City, from across the way, are now light years away (of United) in terms of the football, and it is Pep’s side which must now be overcome in order to mount a valid title challenge....

Fabinho & the Need For A World Class Structure

The weekend's game (versus Watford) was a joy to behold. The build up was excellent, the patterns of play varying, the overloading on point, and one performance in particular was breath taking. Games against Watford (and teams that are deemed vulnerable), are a superb means for players to find rhythm, for forwards to regain ruthless...

Liverpool’s handling of Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate has made just two starts for Liverpool following his £36million transfer from RB Leipzig this summer.  The first arrived in the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League and then he was included in the starting XI for the 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Norwich City. It has now been close...

How would Raphinha have fitted in at Liverpool?

There’s been a lot of Raphinha talk recently. Fabinho mentioned him in a press conference last week during the international break, saying he hoped Liverpool would move for his compatriot last summer. Then you had Deco - the Leeds United winger’s agent - claiming that lots of clubs, including the Reds, had an interest...

Atletico Madrid v Liverpool – Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 8.0 Where Caoimhin Kelleher did nothing wrong, Alisson is a world class asset & his authority showed tonight. He brought assurance and dominance into a big match, and that showed. Some crucial saves kept Liverpool in the game on the first half. His ability to smother on coming forwards is the best...

Is Mohamed Salah the best player in world football?

For the best part of 20 years, Lionel Messi has been the best player in the world. The likes of Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Robert Lewandowski and even Gareth Bale have all been in contention for the second-best player in the world title at various times, but they’ve never eclipsed the Argentine maestro,...

Bobby & The Altered Dynamic

For the past six seasons Roberto Firmino has been able to make the false nice position his own. His understanding of the position, its intricacies and work rate requirements have made the role very specific, and his off ball work has always been commended. His value has a goal threat has not always been...

Watford v Liverpool – Player Ratings

Caoimhin Kelleher - 7.0 A solid display for Alisson’s deputy. Calm and assured, and the fear of Adrián having to fill in is now behind us. Great late stop, and after a relatively uneventful match, this trait of maintaining concentration is a very good sign. Trent Alexander Arnold - 7.5 A welcome return for the tremendously gifted...
