Liverpool Set for Alexis Mac Allister Contract Talks as Andoni Iraola Builds Around Midfield Leader

Liverpool are preparing to open contract talks with Alexis Mac Allister, in a move that feels increasingly logical given the midfielder’s resurgence and his growing importance under Andoni Iraola. After a difficult 2025/26 season for both player and club, the early signs of this campaign suggest a significant reset is under way at Anfield.

Credit to Ismael Mahmoud for reporting the latest development, which points to Liverpool moving towards formal discussions over a new deal. It follows a period where uncertainty around Mac Allister’s future appeared genuine, particularly after new contracts were handed to Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch while his own situation remained unresolved.

Mac Allister revival under Iraola

Mac Allister’s level had dropped during the previous campaign, a season in which Liverpool struggled badly after their 2024/25 Premier League triumph. Although he still featured heavily, making 55 appearances across all competitions, his influence fell short of the standards he had previously set. There was frustration around him and, internally, a sense that his situation required attention.

That picture has changed quickly. Liverpool have started to look sharper, more connected and more committed as a collective. Results have helped shape that feeling, with wins over Brighton, Brentford, Villarreal and LASK giving fresh encouragement. Mac Allister has been central to that uplift, bringing control in possession, renewed intensity without the ball and a more decisive edge in the final third.

His display against Villarreal, where he struck twice in a 4-3 comeback, underlined the shift. More broadly, he has looked like a player re-engaged, physically refreshed and tactically aligned with what his head coach wants.

Alexis Mac Allister contract talks make sense

What matters in situations like this is not only performance level, but also managerial conviction. That appears strong. “According to the source, Alexis is one of the most understanding players of the game and the instructions of coach Andoni Iraola, as the Argentine player is highly appreciated by the Spanish coach, who sees him as an indispensable player in the team for the next stage.”

That assessment is significant because it frames Mac Allister as more than a player in form. It places him among the tactical reference points of this new Liverpool cycle. The club have already shown a willingness to protect core assets, and if Iraola views the Argentina international as indispensable, there is clear logic in trying to secure his future sooner rather than later.

Liverpool midfield plans becoming clearer

Iraola has also spoken openly about the midfielder’s football intelligence, and those comments offer insight into why Liverpool are moving this way. “What I can say about him is that I’m happy, because his performances have been very good since day one I arrived.” He added, “He arrived [as] the last one from the national team, but straight away took everything, all the information. I think he’s smart, understands, you don’t need to explain seven times the same things to Alexis.”

The praise continued, “Some of the players get things very quickly, get information even from opposition, what we need from each team, from each position.” And finally, “And I think he helps a lot also his team-mates, because he understands the overall picture, and it’s good to have him on the pitch.”

For Liverpool, the message is straightforward. A player who looked uncertain months ago now appears fundamental to the next phase. Contract talks are the natural next step.

Our View

This is exactly the kind of update Liverpool needed. There was real unease when Mac Allister’s future started to look less secure, especially because his quality has never been in doubt. Even during the rough patches, it felt obvious he had too much class, too much intelligence and too much personality to be drifting towards the exit.

What makes this so encouraging is the sense of alignment. The manager clearly understands him, the player looks settled again and the team are benefiting from it straight away. When Mac Allister plays with confidence, Liverpool look calmer, smarter and far more balanced. He gives rhythm to the game and helps everyone around him.

There is also something reassuring in seeing the club act before this drags on. Too often, uncertainty can linger and become a distraction. Getting around the table and trying to tie down one of the most complete midfielders in the squad is simply good business.

Supporters will also love the fact that his answer has been on the pitch. He has responded with energy, goals and leadership. That says plenty about his character.

If Liverpool are serious about rebuilding properly under Iraola, Mac Allister has to be one of the pillars. Keeping him feels every bit as important as any new signing.
