Liverpool’s number 10 Sadio Mané has been voted as the 2019 CAF African Player of the Year, winning the award ahead of his Reds teammate Mohamed Salah and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez.

Mané was in Egypt for the ceremony on Tuesday evening and collected the personal award after displaying excellent form for both Liverpool and Senegal over the past 12 months.

The Senegal international helped his national team to the AFCON 2019 final where they, unfortunately, lost to Algeria. For The Reds, in the first half of 2019, Mané played a huge part in Liverpool’s journey to a sixth European Cup trophy while also amassing a record 97 points in the Premier League, finishing just one point behind Manchester City. He shared the 2018/19 Premier League Golden Boot award with Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after scoring 22 league goals.

In the 2019/20 season so far, Mané has already scored 11 Premier League goals and laid on 6 assists, helping Jurgen Klopp’s men to a 13-point lead at the top of the table, with a game in hand. He came off the bench to get Liverpool back into the game against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul. Mané was also pivotal in The Reds’ Club World Cup trophy win in Qatar in December.

Over the last 18 months or so, Sadio Mané has emerged from the shadows and is now definitely one of the most important cogs in Klopp’s red machine.

Congratulations, Sadio!!
