Jürgen Klopp was in a hugely upbeat mood yesterday as his Liverpool first-team squad returned to training at Melwood while adhering to Covid-19 government guidelines.

The Reds’ backroom staff had quite the task on their hands, as does every other Premier League club this week. Training had to be organised within smaller groups while following social distancing protocol.

It’s hoped that Premier League action will return in mid-June as the aim is to see out the 2019/20 campaign to its rightful conclusion.

As is common knowledge, Liverpool’s incredible performance this season so far left them just six points short of confirming league title success when the coronavirus pandemic brought a halt to proceedings.

This week, the first steps to returning to competitive action were taken with Premier League teams getting back t0 training.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after watching the first few training sessions at Melwood yesterday, Klopp was hugely positive when asked if the training was going as well as he had hoped.

“Perfect, absolutely perfect. The sessions were perfectly organised, it is all about football. It’s little things, getting used to the pitch, boots and ball, turns, passes, half-passes, softer passes, running, little accelerations and stuff like that. Little finishes, not proper shooting but little finishes, all this stuff. It looked really, really good, I have to say. If anybody was worried from our fans, you don’t have to – the boys are in good shape.”

Klopp gave some insight into exactly what his morning involved as he got to mingle with his team again.

“The morning started already really well – I woke up even earlier than usual, and then I realised it is my first day. It felt like the first day at school; for me, it was 46 years ago, but it must have been similar. I dressed myself in my uniform again – and for the right reason, for going to training. I drove to Melwood and was really happy to see all the boys. I didn’t see all the boys yet, I only saw 10 of them and the coaches, which is a good start, I would say. They all look in good spirits. The weather is brilliant here. Melwood is prepared for us; all one-way roads through the whole area and everything is prepared and set. We are ready to go and it was really nice to be back.”

The former Borussia Dortmund boss also had some positive news regarding the club’s injury list. It’s now empty with everyone partaking in full training this week.

“Yes, the group is there. They are all fit and hopefully, it stays like this, of course.”
