Liverpool Eye Ousmane Diomande as Nottingham Forest Stall on Sporting Defender
Liverpool are being linked with Ousmane Diomande again, and this one has a certain logic to it. According to Sebastien Vidal, the Sporting Lisbon centre-back remains available after Nottingham Forest failed to push through a deal. Vidal reports that Diomande has “long been on the Reds’ radar”. That matters, because clubs at Liverpool’s level rarely move for central defenders without a fair amount of prior groundwork.
The headline figure is around £34.2m, or roughly £40m in the source report. For a 22-year-old centre-back with Champions League pedigree, top-level physical tools and clear resale value, that is not an outrageous number. If Forest have stepped back, Liverpool should at least be checking whether there is a market opportunity here.

Ousmane Diomande Profile Suits Liverpool Need
This is where it gets straightforward. Liverpool need depth and durability at centre-back. Injuries in the back line have been a recurring issue and no serious club waits for a crisis to become a disaster. Diomande fits the age profile, the development curve and the recruitment model that has shaped plenty of smart deals over recent years.
His strength on the ball stands out immediately. He can progress possession, he is comfortable passing through pressure and he has the range to switch play from deep. In a team that wants control from the first phase, that has value. It is not cosmetic. It changes how a side builds attacks.
Sporting Defender Brings Promise and Questions
There are, however, obvious caveats. Diomande’s defensive numbers off the ball are not spotless. Duel figures and aerial data raise fair questions, particularly for a defender potentially moving into a Premier League where set-pieces, second balls and physical contests decide plenty of matches.
Context helps. Sporting dominate many matches in Portugal, so defenders there are often asked to defend different spaces and different situations. That can distort the raw numbers. Even so, Liverpool cannot ignore those details. A ball-playing centre-back is useful, a centre-back who struggles too often in the air becomes a problem quickly.

Much may depend on wider priorities. If Liverpool are still exploring expensive attacking additions, every pound counts. Yet £34.2m for a high-upside defender can be sensible business if the recruitment staff believe the weaknesses are coachable. Diomande looks like a player worth serious consideration, not blind enthusiasm, but certainly consideration.

From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, this is the kind of link that grabs attention because it makes practical sense. Diomande is young, highly regarded and already playing for a club where the pressure to dominate the ball is real. That part of his game could translate well under Andoni Iraola, especially if Liverpool want defenders who can pass with purpose rather than simply circulate possession.
The concern is obvious too. Premier League forwards test you physically every week. Crosses come in, long balls arrive, set-pieces pile up. If the numbers suggest he is not dominant enough in duels or in the air, supporters will wonder whether Liverpool are buying another project when a more complete defender may be needed now.
Still, this feels like a smarter rumour than many others. The fee is not absurd, the age is right and the upside is clear. If Forest cannot get it done and Liverpool have genuinely tracked him for a long time, then there is no reason to sit on the sidelines. Good clubs exploit hesitation from others. Liverpool should do exactly that here, provided the data work and scouting both say the same thing.
