The Transfer Show: Slot, Alonso and Liverpool’s Summer Crossroads

Trev Downey and Dave Davis assess the growing pressure on Arne Slot and why the Burnley draw became such a pivotal moment in the fan narrative. This segment looks at belief, risk and whether Liverpool are prepared to hold their nerve while the noise around the dugout continues to grow. Learn more about your ad choices. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. Norwich 0-3 Liverpool: Observations as Reds cruise to opening-day win

Liverpool's title challenge is off to a serene start. Goals at the mid-point of either half from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino defused the Carrow Road occasion, and after Mohamed Salah's curler wrapped-up the points, the jubilant away support was in olé mode. The Reds only gave up one truly significant opportunity in the match...

There were a few title challenges but they always faded away. The club could only watch on in envy as their...

Liverpool Begin Premier League Campaign With Norwich Win

Liverpool opened up their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 win away to Norwich. Takumi Minamino – Time To Make His Mark?

Each and every summer, there’s a few squad members that will inevitably be linked with moves away. At Liverpool, and certainly under the management of Jurgen Klopp, this is no different. After a season of frustration, no fans and a last ditch run for Champions League qualification, there are the usual suspects that may...

A winning start in the Premier League is crucial for Liverpool: can they do it?

Why Liverpool need to sell Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool now need to sell Xherdan Shaqiri. Previously, it felt as though this was more of a want. Well, not even that. It was more along the line of the club not being against cashing in on the Swizterland international if a decent enough bid was received.  There’d be a report every summer claiming £20million...

Liverpool’s Divock Origi conundrum

The Divock Origi situation is interesting.  Liverpool are believed to want £20million for the Belgium international. Interested clubs are reluctant to go that high, with Wolves reportedly willing to pay £10million for the 26-year-old.  On one hand, clubs know he’s not part of the first-team picture at Anfield having made just two Premier League starts last...

Who is Liverpool transfer target Arnaut Danjuma?

Shopping in the Championship isn’t as frowned upon as it once was. There have been plenty of success stories in recent years. Furthermore, Liverpool have made a bit of a habit out of signing players from recently relegated clubs so moving for a player direct from England’s second tier isn’t beyond the realms of...

How should Liverpool line-up in attack this season?

Neil Jones got a lot of Liverpool fans talking recently when he wrote that 'next summer is already being talked up as a big one by sources close to the club'. I chose, based on past experience, not to read into that. Instead, it was another line in his piece that stood out to...

Klopp on Hertha Defeat and the Return of Van Dijk and Gomez

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp saw plenty of room for improvement on the pitch as The Reds lost 4-3 to Hertha BSC in their latest friendly. Sadio Mané, Takumi Minamino, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were on the scoresheet for Klopp's side while Mohamed Salah, Naby Keïta, and Harvey Elliott impressed throughout. Scrappy defending at the other end meant...

Joel Matip – Elite When Fit

Any players that are part of the unfortunate group, known as injury prone, approach most summers with their club status in question. With singular long term injuries taking players away for long spells, it can be accepted the inevitability of such injuries. When persistent injuries creep into players games, and GIF’s of players wrapped...

What Positions Still Need to be Filled by Liverpool?

Liverpool’s disappointing 2021/21 season was largely due to a catastrophic series of injuries. All three senior centre-backs missed long stretches, along with Henderson, Jota, Thiago, and more. A return to even average injury luck should see the Reds bouncing back in 2021/22. The higher-ups at Liverpool seem to be banking on this, having only made...

Huge chance for Naby Keita to prove his worth at Liverpool

It's fair to say Naby Keita's Liverpool career has been a disappointing one.
