SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Liverpool’s Dark Night of the Soul

A few years ago, I spent time on a retreat. No mobile phones, no conversation allowed. Just me, my surroundings and a few books. For the first few days, I enjoyed it. I read the books cover-to-cover, I woke up early and treasured the views of Salamanca. I enjoyed the cool night air which acted...

Steven Gerrard – The Best There Ever Will Be, According To…

There are some lies floating around lately, suggesting that Steven Gerrard is over-rated. Whilst some of the coverage given to his last game at Anfield might have been over the top, and were perhaps something Gerrard himself might have toned down given the choice, the respect he’s been given from his peers and football fans...

“Premier League Proven” Proves NOTHING!

Nothing quite grinds Liverpool fans' gears like the words “Outstanding” or “Character”. However, that doesn’t stop Brendan Rodgers from using them at every opportunity presented to him. The reason why those phrases get fans backs up against the wall is because they’re simply not true. We are not outstanding, haven’t been all season. We...

Liverpool in Limbo

Liverpool are in a perpetual state of limbo. The quip many fans make about "next year being our year" has seen two decades pass without the league title. So much promise yet at the end of it all the club seems to be in a never ending transitional period. Sales of star players has...

Steven Gerrard Deserved Better

A picturesque Anfield, basking in the Mersyside suns' radiance, oh, how it all seemed so befitting for a man who had kept the failing recent light on Mersyside, shining as bright as one man possibly could will it to. As the hallowed Saturday approached, it hadn’t sunk in yet, our leader, our role model,...

Kristian Walsh: Q & A – Rodgers, Sterling, Henderson and next season

The Premier League season is drawing to a close and with it comes controversy amongst Liverpool fans. Brendan Rodgers' position as manager has been questioned, the future of Raheem Sterling is uncertain and disappointment over decisions made by the transfer committee is being voiced.  This week, the Sterling saga continued but Liverpool's players celebrated the...

Brendan Continues Dribble To Media Even As Another Manager Outwits Him

‘But the players have fought and given everything that they possibly can. Hopefully in the summer we can add that quality that the group clearly needs and look to take the opportunity next year." These were Brendan Rodgers’ words after the loss to Crystal Palace on the occasion of Gerrard’s last Anfield match. For...

Raheem Sterling – Liverpool’s Shining Light but far from The Finished Product

So Raheem Sterling is once again grabbing the headlines for the wrong reasons. Recent reports suggest that the diminutive winger has told Brendan Rodgers that he wants to quit the Anfield club at the end of the season in search of silverware. It is believed that he is disappointed with the club for making...

Broken or Wounded? Where to Next for Liverpool?

As grief compounds the world of most Liverpool supporters; the melancholic sense of a worthless season hangs in the rear-view mirror; only heightened by the departure of the one dependable thing Liverpool had left in Steven Gerrard. Gerrard symbolised everything Liverpool stood for; even in the toughest of adversity, even when everything looked bleak,...

Steven Gerrard: the Opposition’s Bogeyman

Bogeyman Noun An imaginary evil spirit used to frighten children - A person or thing widely regarded as an object of fear There was once a story that was told all across world. This wasn't just any old story but one that struck genuine fear into people of all ages. People would be filled with dread the night...

Emre Can – Right Back In The Middle

Emre Can arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2014, and the then 20-year-old German was seen an exciting young prospect with the potential to become one of the top midfielders in Europe. Can’s impressive performances at Bayer Leverkusen had alerted his old club Bayern Munich, where he’d spent four years as a youth player....

Liverpool Must Sign Experience Over Youth This Summer

As the season comes to an end all eyes and ears will be fixated on who Liverpool will sign in the transfer window. The club has not been particularly successful in this area since Brendan Rodgers took over as manager three seasons ago. The Reds can only count Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho as...

Why Andrea Pirlo To Liverpool Makes No Sense Whatsoever

The season approaches it's finale and it couldn’t come any sooner for Liverpool fans as their season has been a disappointment. They’ve witnessed a regression in their beloved Liverpool side from the previous season which raised many hopes. However, it’s that time of year again where Liverpool Football Club will be linked to the world and their wife...

Opportunity Botched By Liverpool

This season has not been "par" for Liverpool Football Club; far from it. The justification for calling 5th place par is just an excuse for failure and an acceptance of mediocrity. I'm not delusional, I didn't expect us to win the title or even challenge for it like last season. But to be told, by...

Points or Position? What Matters Most?

In the aftermath of the Liverpool vs Chelsea game on Sunday I was scrolling through Twitter looking at the overreactions of many with stats being thrown around like nobody's business. All normal stuff before one stat in particular caught me off guard. "Brendan Rodgers averages 76 points per season as Liverpool manager." Shit, I thought, how...

Steven Gerrard’s Top 10 Goals

The end is nigh. For Liverpool fans that is. Steven Gerrard has a mere two games left with his boyhood club and the realisation is hitting many. Local boy who came good. I'm not sure how it compares for the rest of you but for me it's like when my first pet died. You kind...

A Football Team Is Like A Piano… But Liverpool Have No One to Play It

“A football team is like a piano. You need eight men to carry it and three who can play the damn thing.” Bill Shankly In the 2013/14 season Liverpool experienced, in the words of Jim Fishlock ,"a perfect storm”. It was a season in which the Reds and their manager catered brilliantly to a world class player, finding...

Christian Benteke – Gruel of the Premier League

We're a few days into May and silly season is going into overdrive. A new name is linked to the club everyday and a new topic of conversation for people. For some fans this is a welcomed distraction from a season which began with great expectations following on from our title charge but you'd...

“Par”-don me Mr Rodgers

Par, such a simple and non-offensive word. Just 3 little letters, it's hard to get upset by a word like Par isn't it? Well thats what you would have thought this time last week.  However, since a certain Mr Rodgers uttered that non-offensive little word in a press conference, I've seen it written more times than...

Take Over The Ship Captain Hendo

Three games leave us from saying goodbye to arguably the best player Anfield has ever seen, Steven Gerrard, our captain for over 12 years. He’s a Liverpool legend I’ll remember as the attacking midfielder who won us trophies and offered us fans, dozens of memorable moments. Plus, he’s the producer of the best 6 minutes...

Steven Gerrard’s Time at Liverpool | The End Is Nigh

In just a few games time, we will say goodbye to one the greatest players ever to have graced the Premier League. Bar a Premier League title, he won all other major honours on his journey with his beloved club, winning the love and respect of football fans all over the world. Not just...

Liverpool U21s 2 Leicester 1 – Cameron Brannagan Strike Takes Liverpool Top

Michael Beale's Liverpool u21 side had the chance to go top of the league today, but in order to do so they had to beat Leicester City in Chester. The last outing for the under-21s saw an impressive performance from 18-year-old attacking midfielder Ryan Kent, who ran the show and scored two goals in the...

Liverpool’s Youth and the Relevant

Morale is at an all-time low for the fans, the determination of our first team players is depleting after every poor result, and our manager seems to have run out of ideas. It seems like Liverpool has reached a dangerous place, we have lost the Champions League spot and we have nothing else to...

Pay for Memphis Depay | An Analytical Look

In recent days and weeks, Liverpool have been linked with the purchase of Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven. There have been news pieces on how Liverpool have been monitoring Depay for almost a year and have reinforced their monitoring in recent weeks, the key being 'Monitoring'. So what could Depay bring to Liverpool and...

Clean Sheets Don’t Hide The Dirt in Defence for Liverpool

"Just because everything is different doesn't mean anything has changed" - Irene Peter. Defensive frailties have been at the forefront of Brendan Rodgers' reign as Liverpool manager so far. The goals of last season papered over last season's cracks and despite the improvement since Christmas 2014, Liverpool are only 4 goals better off defensively than they...

Unfinished Business – Fact! Should Rafa Return to Liverpool?

I have always held FSG in high regard after their purchase of Liverpool Football Club. The manner in which they despatched their American compatriots, Messers Hicks & Gillett, was stunningly meticulous in it’s execution. Callous, cold and quite frankly ballsy to say the least. They came, saw what they wanted, and grabbed it from...

Bring Klopp to the Kop to Replace the Failing Rodgers

Many moons ago (roughly ten), last season ended in glorious failure, of sorts, for Liverpool Football Club and its fans. That failure (to get a point against Chelsea/to keep a lead against Palace) was however, very much tempered by the fact that nobody had truly expected us to ever have been in the position...

Philippe Coutinho: A shining light in a frustrating season

Philippe Coutinho was recently named in the PFA team of the year; but in expected style, not all agreed. It was questioned by some as to whether he deserved to make the line-up, but why shouldn't he? In what has been such a frustrating and disappointing season for Liverpool, the Reds didn't make that stepping...

Adam Lallana – The Emblem of this Season

This season has been one of frustration on the most part, offset by early season excitement and a little bit of hope thrown in for good measure. I feel Adam Lallana epitomises this season completely. Those of you who follow me will know I'm not the biggest Lallana fan. This is more to do with...

Rodgers Has 99 Problems and Big Games Are One!

Nearing the end of a forgetful season it's easy to do one of two things; either remind yourself of the poor start of the season or at every given opportunity brag about the unbeaten streak we had at the start of 2015. In isolation both tell a completely different story but the season should...
