Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. With Liverpool's mounting injury concerns, particularly among defenders in the squad, The Reds are rumoured to be interested in Schalke's Ozan Kabak. As reported in recent days by the Mirror, Jürgen Klopp is an admirer of the 20-year-old centre-backs talents. Kabak is already a full international for Turkey. He has been playing his football in...

Tactical Breakdown: Liverpool 2-0 Midtjylland

Time is precious, especially time on the training pitches. Since the start of the season, Jürgen Klopp has found very little time between games to work tactically with his team, with match preparation, recovery and rest requirements taking up the majority of time between fixtures. The fixture schedule is so intense that rotation across...

The reasons behind Liverpool’s new shape

At least once every season, usually around this time of the year, Jurgen Klopp switches it up and has his Liverpool side play a variation of a 4-2-3-1. In the past, it’s been a way to help bed in new players. Other times, the maverick German has used it to keep things fresh.  During 2017/18,...

Update on the fitness of Liverpool’s Fabinho and Jordan Henderson

Liverpool's injury woes continued last night as The Reds suffered more bad luck during their 2-0 Champions League win over FC Midtjylland. Jürgen Klopp's Reds had to remain patient before second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah (penalty) sealed the three points. However, the victory came at a price as Liverpool's makeshift centre-half Fabinho...

Blackburn Loan Ideal Stomping Ground For Harvey Elliott

Liverpool sent a raft of players out on loan to lower league opposition on the final day of recently closed the transfer window. Harry Wilson, Herbie Kane, Ben Woodburn, and Harvey Elliott all temporarily departed to pastures new and Elliott -- with all due respect to the trio of academy graduates -- who joined Blackburn...

Tactical Breakdown: Liverpool 2-1 Sheffield United

With Manchester City dropping points in the early kick-off, and Liverpool denied a late winner in last week's Merseyside Derby at the behest of David Coote, the pressure was on for the champions to regain some momentum after the hammer blows of injuries and disappointing results. Jürgen Klopp made a surprising tactical change, playing four...

Lacklustre Liverpool Labour To Win

Goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah sealed a 2-0 win for Liverpool over Midtjylland at Anfield in Group D of the Champions. After making five changes from the victory over Sheffield United -- with only the back five and Jota retained -- a performance devoid of any fluency still yielded a win, which was...

Liverpool welcome Danish club FC Midtjylland to Anfield tonight as Jürgen Klopp's side looks to make it two wins from two in the Champions League. The Reds won 1-0 away to Ajax in their opening group game last week while Midtjylland went down to a heavy 4-0 defeat at home to Serie A side Atalanta. Let's...

Shaqiri’s the odd man out as Klopp’s Liverpool squad evolves

There were quite rightly a few eyebrows raised during Liverpool's recent Champions League victory over Ajax when Klopp decided to rotate his entire front three. Mané, Salah and Firmino were replaced by Minamino, Jota and the lesser spotted Xherdan Shaqiri in the vital 1-0 win. Both Jota and Minamino turned in bright displays, with the former...

Liverpool new boy delighted to have given The Reds a “massive three points” with winner on Saturday

Liverpool's Diogo Jota scored a great headed goal to beat Sheffield United at the weekend. The Portugal international felt it was "a massive three points" for his new club. Jürgen Klopp's Reds had gone behind to a Sander Berge penalty after just 13 minutes when Fabinho was very harshly adjudged to have fouled Oliver McBurnie...

3 Potential Replacements for Virgil van Dijk

Before we get into this, I want to make it clear that it’s impossible to replace Virgil van Dijk. The best we can hope for is finding someone who fills the void in the backline and in my heart to the best of their abilities.  Now that we’ve cleared that up, we can look at...

Key Stats as Liverpool get back on track against Sheffield United

Liverpool got back on track in the Premier League after back to back games without a win, by coming from behind to see off Sheffield United 2-1 at Anfield. Diego Jota marked his first league start at Anfield with the match-winning goal, as Roberto Firmino got his campaign off and running following a penalty...

Player Ratings as Liverpool Put the Blades to the Sword

Liverpool got back to winning ways in the Premier League after a reasonably solid 2-1 over Sheffield United at Anfield. The Reds went behind after more disgraceful officiating aided by VAR, but dug deep to come away with all three points. Alisson – 6 It was great to see our gloved Brazilian back between the sticks...

Liverpool Blunt Blades in Comeback Win

Goals from Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota saw Liverpool fight back from 1-0 down to beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Anfield. Far from their best, the Reds -- who were on the receiving end of more farcical VAR decisions -- eked out a win and moved level with Everton at the top of the table. With...

Understated Robertson continues superb start to the season

In years and decades to come, Liverpool supporters will look back at this phenomenal team and pick out the poster boys from it, lavishing them with love and praise. Whereas some great teams only have two or three iconic figures to bore future generations to death about, there are endless contenders in this Liverpool side. Virgil...

He’s Not Perfect, But He’s Ours

I just want to make a point, a point that should be obvious to all Liverpool supporters, but something that seems to be lost in the reactionary atmosphere in which we live these days. Adrian. Adrian is our back-up keeper. If he was good enough to be a top-6 keeper elsewhere, he would be. But he's...

Ajax 0-1 Liverpool: Who Was Man of the Match?

Liverpool made a solid start to their 2020/21 Champions League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena. It wasn’t the most convincing of wins, with the Reds requiring a strange own-goal from Nicolas Tagliafico to win them the game. Nevertheless, after a couple of scary moments at the back, Liverpool defended...

Tactical Breakdown: Ajax 0-1 Liverpool

Despite both clubs' European pedigree, the last competitive game between these two sides was played back in the time of Bill Shankly. Much has changed since then. Nonetheless, football is still football, and tactics are the gameplans employed by managers to produce a particular outcome. These gameplans are often the product of the manager's...

Klopp praises Fabinho and Joe Gomez central defensive partnership after win at Ajax

Liverpool got their Champions League campaign off to a great start thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Ajax with Fabinho and Joe Gomez forming a solid partnership in central defence. Fabinho had a particularly good game at centre-half while Joe Gomez also showed a marked improvement in his level of performance. This could...

Thiago Influence Can Lift Jordan Henderson To Old Self

Jordan Henderson is an extremely versatile player, as we've seen throughout the entirety of his Liverpool career. Whether it's been as the midfield anchor, as an energetic, box to box tornado of engine room intensity or -- as we saw in his first season with the Reds, under Kenny Dalglish -- as a right midfielder...

Ajax 0-1 Liverpool: Player ratings as Reds battle to three Group D points

Liverpool ended their run of three games without a win by doggedly beating Ajax. Nicolas Tagliafico's clumsy own-goal was ultimately the difference, though Davy Klaassen hit the post and Liverpool spurned opportunities of their own in the closing stages. Here's how the Reds rated in Amsterdam... Adrian - 7 It was far from a confident start - the...

Liverpool Open Group D Campaign With Win

An own goal from Nicolas Tagliafico saw Liverpool open their Champions League Group D campaign with a 1-0 victory away to Ajax. Far from their best, the Reds -- who played a makeshift centre half pairing of Joe Gomez and Fabinho -- battled their way to a win in a professional rather than purring showing. It...

Will this be Liverpool’s starting lineup against Ajax tonight?

Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign tonight away to Ajax. Let's have a look at the likely starting lineup Jürgen Klopp may go with. By now, all Reds fans are aware that we are likely to be without Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season. Currently, Liverpool are also missing Alisson and Alex...

Fabinho may well be first-choice centre-back in Van Dijk’s absence

It's strange to think, but Liverpool's second-best centre-back, after Virgil van Dijk, may well be Fabinho. This isn't an article having a go at a clearly excellent, but still young and developing Joe Gomez. I'm a huge fan of Gomez as a defender. Still only 23, the former Charlton Athletic player is one of England's...

Virgil Loss Will Be a Huge Blow But Liverpool Are Still Brilliant

Let's get the captain obvious statement out of the way at the beginning, shall we? Liverpool will miss Virgil van Dijk during his injury lay off, which, per reports, could last anything from six to nine months. If you could manufacture the perfect centre half in a lab, equipped with elite physical, mental, technical and leadership...
