Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Youngsters Who Could Make The Breakthrough This Season

Liverpool stood strong in the transfer market this summer, making just four signings, none of which are guaranteed first-team action in the near future. Jurgen Klopp has shown faith in the squad which won the Champions League last term, which could mean that he’s also ready to throw some youngsters into the mix. A number...

Key Stats as Liverpool maintain peerless perfection

Liverpool are the only Premier League side who can still boast a 100% Premier League record after Mohamed Salah powered them past Arsenal. As many expected, the Reds' attacking quality proved overwhelming for the visitors, with the only blot on the copybook a late consolation from Lucas Torreira. Here are the key stats from...

Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal: Who was Man of the Match?

A pretty comfortable 3-1 victory over Arsenal. A result we’ve come to expect over the last few years at Anfield against the Gunners. There were some impressive performances all over the pitch for the Reds as we go top of the table with the only 100% record in the Premier League. Starting at the back,...

Rampant Reds Run Over Arsenal

A clash between the Premier League’s remaining unbeaten teams turned into a one-sided affair with Liverpool taking all the spoils in comfortable fashion. From the onset, Arsenal clearly set out to avoid the recent beatings they have suffered at Anfield by sitting back on defence. They were happy to soak up pressure without giving Liverpool’s...

Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal – Player Ratings as Reds stroll past Gunners

Liverpool made it three wins out of three to start the Premier League season, with a superb 3-1 win at Anfield, on an evening when the Reds were dominant for large parts of the game. After a first half that Jurgen Klopp's side controlled, Joel Matip gave them the lead with a superb header off...

Klopp’s retirement: Is it to be believed?

Despite riding the crest of a wave at present as reigning Champions League and Super Cup champions, there's a degree of uncertainty and trepidation in the air among Liverpool fans this week. It comes after widespread reports on social media this week that manager Jürgen Klopp dropped a huge hint that he'll retire when his...

Liverpool to face Arsenal This Saturday after the defeat of Southampton

The euphoria of victory against Chelsea has not yet been digested by Liverpool players and fans around the world when the Reds increased the cause for celebration by defeating Southampton 2 – 1 last Saturday 17th of August. The triumph came about following goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino and so far since...

Pep Guardiola and his Liverpool Inferiority Complex

Liverpool are in Pep Guardiola's head more than ever before. It's quite something. No sooner had Man City been denied by VAR against Tottenham than their manager was banging on about the Reds again, referencing Adrian's foot not being on his line in the UEFA Super Cup penalty shootout win over Chelsea. He can't help...

Oxlade-Chamberlain adds another dimension to Liverpool midfield

The 4-1 dismantling of Norwich City or the Super Cup triumph over Chelsea should be the highlight of the two weeks old 2019/20 campaign but the biggest positive so far arrived in the 2-1 victory against Southampton.  No, it wasn’t Sadio Mane continuing his destructive 2019 with a goal and an assist. It wasn’t Roberto...

Should Klopp Send A Weakened Side To The Club World Cup?

The Champions League win at the backend of last season was a perfect end to a near faultless season for Liverpool. However, the win means that they must not participate in the FIFA Club World Cup at the end of 2019, and what had been treated as a major trophy when Manchester United were...

Sancho and Liverpool would be a match made in heaven

Borussia Dortmund have positioned themselves well to recoup an eye-watering fee when they part ways with Jadon Sancho next summer. The Bundesliga runners-up have rewarded the England international with a new, improved deal as recognition for his fine performances over the past 12 months.  The 19-year-old is now believed to be on £190,000-per-week, an absurd...

Adrian already loving Liverpool in his short time at the club

Liverpool's new arrival, Adrian, has already enjoyed what he considers one of the best moments of his career at the club, despite arriving less than a month ago. Adrian arrived in early August when it became clear that Liverpool's second-choice goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet, was returning to his homeland with Club Brugge. In the first half of...

Ox Recovery Takes Another Positive Step

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain's recovery from the major knee ligaments injury he suffered last season took another positive turn last Saturday. The midfielder, making his second start of the season, produced a thoroughly efficient off the ball display. Ox achieved a match-high 14 possession wins via pressing against the club whose academy system he cut his...

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool: A Tactical Breakdown

Liverpool's start to the season always appeared challenging. But how Liverpool would respond to this challenge would likely be the best indicator of how well the team will perform in the coming months. Playing Southampton away from home was the first potential banana skin of the season, even more so due to the 120...

Jamie Carragher reckons Liverpool need to sign Leicester star

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that James Maddison is one signing that The Reds should make to close the gap on Manchester City. Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Carragher sang the praises of the Leicester City midfielder who moved to the King Power Stadium last summer from Norwich City. Maddison went on to...

Klopp’s Liverpool Evolution

Last season, Liverpool was arguably the best team in Europe. An incredible Champions League victory and a stupendous 97 point league haul; allied with 30 league wins, which was always a mark of special Premier League Champions (at least in the past!). Four games into the new season, and, so far so good. Liverpool have...

Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain loved being back in action at St Mary’s

Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was delighted to make his first Premier League start in 14 months against Southampton on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp selected Oxlade-Chamberlain as part of his midfield trio, alongside Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner. This was after The Reds had endured a tough week of travelling to and from Turkey as well as the...

Roberto Firmino could be even better this season

Roberto Firmino has started the season like he means business. It isn’t something Liverpool fans are used to with the Brazilian usually looking off the pace when he returns to pre-season after a summer break.  It’s by no means comparable to a Sunday League player trotting round the pitch after a heavy Saturday night but...

Klopp Creating Liverpool Siege Mentality

Jurgen Klopp reneged on entering into the transfer market this summer to reinforce his first team. Despite links to several players, including Nicolas Pepe and Bruno Fernandes, the German elected to keep his powder dry and not add ready-made first-team options to his squad. Legitimate arguments were made that the European Champions needed to add depth...

Observations as the Liverpool Escape From St. Mary’s with a Win

Liverpool stayed perfect on the young season with a wild and topsy-turvy 2-1 win over the Saints. Liverpool were equal parts dominant and diabolical as they were lucky to go into the break ahead and then managed to make things difficult at the end despite completely controlling most of the 2nd half. After some brief...

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool: Who was Man of the Match?

It was a game that every Liverpool fan knew was going to be a struggle. Not only was it an away match against a solid Southampton side, but with the 120 minutes played in midweek added to that, 3 points was looking a difficult ask. The front three were going to have to work...

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool – Player Ratings as Reds scrap to St. Mary’s win

Liverpool’s Striking Stars Shine to Sink Saints

Liverpool equalled a club record 11 consecutive Premier League wins with a 2-1 victory away to Southampton. Goals from Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino saw the Reds lead 2-0 before Danny Ings punished a massive Adrian blunder late in the second half.  Showing some residual impact from their 120 minute long energy-sapping Super Cup victory over...

Fabinho’s influence on the Liverpool midfield

Despite being European champions, Liverpool have a squad full of divisive players. Some are undervalued and some are simply misunderstood. There are a number who tick both boxes and one such player is Fabinho.  The Brazilian doesn’t score goals. He doesn’t assist them either. He doesn’t play 70-yard crossfield passes that are shown on the...

Predicting Liverpool’s lineup for Southampton clash on Saturday

Liverpool are back in action again on Saturday when they travel to play Southampton at St Mary's in the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp's men went through 120 minutes of football on Wednesday night in Istanbul so if they can manage to take all three points from Saturday's game it will be job very well done...

On the all-too-hasty dismissal of Liverpool’s title chances

In light of certain media coverage, we have to set out some important facts. Expected title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City both won their first game of the season - convincingly. There are another 37 matches still to be played. That's stating the obvious, but the obvious seems to have slipped the mind of the...

Speculation was rife that the former holder...
