Scouser Tommies: ONE HUGE WEEKEND

Scouser Tommies: ONE HUGE WEEKEND

Join Jim Boardman and Jay Reid as they soak in the incredible atmosphere enveloping the city of Liverpool ahead of a monumental Bank Holiday weekend. The city is buzzing with events, from Radio One's Big Weekend to cruise liners docking, but most important of all it’s the final game of the season - a formality to go through before that long-awaited trophy lift, ahead of the victory parade through the city’s streets on Monday. For Jay, that trophy lift is an especially poignant moment; it’s the first time in his lifetime he'll witness Liverpool lift the league trophy at Anfield – a ticket he wouldn't sell for any price. It’s the first time the Reds have lifted the league trophy in front of fans at Anfield for 35 years, so a large chunk of the Liverpool support are in the same boat. Two of the greatest centre-backs in football history will be on the pitch as the trophy gets lifted, with true club legend Alan Hansen set to present the trophy to future club legend Virgil Van Dijk, adding to the symbolism of the occasion. Jurgen Klopp will be there too, keeping to his promise of coming back but not in a way that would interfere with the work of Arne Slot. No surprise he’s there; he’s as big a fan as any of us, and every fan wants to be there. If only - but Anfield, as big as it now is, can’t possibly contain every Red who wants to be there on Sunday. In fact, if estimates of how many people are heading into the city for the weekend are true, 16 Anfields wouldn’t be enough. No problem though; the city is ready to showcase its unique, welcoming spirit and show how it throws a party, as the Reds' heroes show that trophy off from the top of a bus! The last match itself sees Liverpool host Crystal Palace. With both teams in a celebratory mood (Palace fresh from their own FA Cup triumph), Jay and Jim are wondering if it’s even worth bothering with the footy itself. Jim and Jay reflect on a season where Liverpool exceeded expectations to clinch that title, but with transfer windows set to open, work needs to be done to ensure new expectations are met. No Red expected Slot to be so successful so soon - but all Reds want more of the same. The hosts briefly discuss some of the transfer rumours swirling around potential incomings like Frimpong and Kerkez, and possible departures including the respected Joe Gomez and potentially Darwin Nunez. Since the show was recorded, rumours about Florian Wirtz leaving Germany for Merseyside have gathered pace, but until he’s had his photo holding up his new shirt, Jay and Jim are assuming nothing. There's also discussion on manager Arne Slot's latest press conference, particularly his comments on Trent Alexander-Arnold's training and defensive application, and how the media has portrayed this. The hosts touch on how Trent might be received and the importance of focusing on the collective celebration. What advice would the hosts give Arne, if he asked, on how to handle this last bit with Trent? As for that victory parade, the hosts offer some tips for fans wanting to catch a glimpse of the champions. It's a time to savour the moment, celebrate a hard-won title, and look forward to what the future holds for the Reds. As always, there’s plenty to laugh about from across the park, although you aren’t likely to find any of them there as the A55 clogs up under the weight of a blue-tinged exodus to North Wales. Sunday will also mark the final match for George Sephton, the iconic 'Voice of Anfield'. His voice has boomed around Anfield for decades, since the days the Reds were winning titles almost every season. He really is and has been part of Anfield - he’s been there for the good times and the bad, and it really won’t be the same without him. Thanks for everything, George, from all of us. Liverpool saw off Manchester City in an absolutely staggering 4-3 win that might well rank as one of their best performances under Jürgen Klopp. But what were the key stats from this incredible game of football? Observations as Liverpool and City produce a Classic!

Liverpool and Manchester City went hammer and tongs throughout the 90 minutes as Liverpool edged the 7 goal thriller in a game which was once again one of the best advertisements for the Premier League as a whole. Liverpool thus break City's lossless streak this season. My key observations are below: Liverpool end the week...

Player Ratings As The Reds Rock – Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City

Trying to compile my thoughts rationally and not give everyone a 10/10 will be difficult, but I'll do my best. Seriously though, wow! Manchester City are one hell of a football team, but Liverpool aren't too bad either. Of course, The Reds do their thing and make it hard for themselves after being 4-1 up,...

Scouting Christian Pulisic: Dortmund’s Teenage Sensation

At 1-1, Dortmund’s recent failures stared them in the face. Julian Nagelsmann – the manager they’ve been pursuing as a means of ailing all their woes suffered under previous incumbents – was about to grind out a great result at the Signal Iduna Park. Hoffenheim had taken a first-half lead but the lack of...

Liverpool v Manchester City Preview – Key Battles

After what seems like forever, Liverpool have had a whole week between two games, and the break couldn't have come at a better time than in the lead-up to a game against Manchester City, who have made a mockery of the Premier League this season. City have only dropped points twice this season but come...

Why the 3-4-2-1 makes the most sense for Klopp’s Post-Coutinho Liverpool

Like Alonso, Torres, Mascherano, Sterling and Suarez before him, Philippe Coutinho has been lured away by one of the bigger fish in world football. As a result, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are left with the task maintaining what is widely considered to be an upward trajectory without their most influential player. It is fortunate, at...

Van Dijk & Keita | Posing A New Threat From Deep

I started writing a tactical piece a few months ago which was set to be titled ‘How to Stop Liverpool’. This was around the time that Liverpool suffered two bad results at Anfield in the space of a week by drawing with both West Brom and Everton despite dominating the ball in both matches....

Defending Set Pieces – A Statistical Analysis

It's silly season again. Time to double click on that football manager icon and see who the next football wunderkind is. Time to test your f5 button's durability. And most importantly time to complain about FSG and their transfer policy. I was thinking about writing on the hot topic but I as I have...

Radio Silence Of Window A Sign Of Things To Come At Liverpool FC?

Radio silence makes everyone nervous, particularly when it comes to transfers. Having allowed Coutinho to make his highly anticipated big-money move to Barcelona midway through the season with the top-four, FA Cup and Champions League still all to play for represents a huge risk from Jurgen Klopp and the owners. Naturally, that's sent fans into...

The Presence Of Virgil van Dijk Will Lift Those Around Him

Something that stands out immediately when you look at Virgil van Dijk is the authority he possesses. There is a real aura about him. It is something that has always been evident with the Rolls Royce centre-back, whether it be as a youngster at FC Groningen, someone way ahead of the rest at Celtic or...

Mystery Liverpool FC Target Narrowed By Northcroft

After the untimely departure of Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool supporters are understandably anxious to pin their hopes to a replacement. The names that are repeatedly thrown out there are Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez and Monaco’s Thomas Lemar. However, reports have varied from tales of deals nearly done to outright dismissals of the links altogether. Two recent journalist...

Why Klopp was right to sell Coutinho

If you are like me you're still probably feeling more than slightly irritated at the sale of Phil Coutinho. Yes, the club got good money for him and it allows Klopp to build up the wider squad. But the circumstances and manner of his departure certainly leaves a sour taste behind. Frankly, the way Phil...

The Ramifications Of Philippe Coutinho’s Transfer To Barcelona

On Saturday, the news Liverpool fans had long been dreading and Barcelona fans had been dreaming of was finally announced. Philippe Coutinho was officially made a Barcelona player, becoming the third most expensive player in the world - behind fellow countryman Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at €142million. The only solace that Reds fans can take from...

Why one player alone can’t replace Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool

Philippe Coutinho is leaving Liverpool. This won't come as a surprise to many as it was pretty clear since the player went on strike in the summer that it was only going to be a matter of time. Many supporters including myself are however extremely concerned about losing Coutinho this month. The Reds are...

Liverpool FC: A Guide to Being a Supporter

I start this piece knowing full well I am standing against the strongest of currents. Here I am, in my privileged position, as a writer and as someone who is fortunate enough to go to Liverpool and watch my team play, dictating how to support my/your/our team, Liverpool Football Club. It's a strange position to...

Virgil And The Perfect Debut

Nothing scares me more than the debut of a big money player. It takes me back to the passage in Carra’s autobiography where he discusses the signing of El-Hadj Diouf from Lens. ‘The Serial Killer’ (and we can assume that he gave himself that nickname) cost Gerard Houllier £10m – the equivalent of about three...

Riyad Mahrez: The Man To Reignite The ‘Fab Four’?

It’s widely known that Riyad Mahrez wants to leave Leicester City, with the Algerian keen to test himself at a top Premier League club and make the next step in his career. There’s a wide berth of interest too, with all of the top-six linked to the winger at one time or the other. With...

So, farewell then, Philippe Coutinho.

So, farewell then, Philippe Coutinho. ‘I know I signed a contract, but I want to leave now.’ That was your catchphrase. Well, it’s easy to sound bitter and mealy-mouthed. So let’s do that. The announcement of Coutinho’s departure is news and, at the same time, no news at all. The club loves a drama and this one has...

Why Liverpool will flourish without Phil Coutinho

I want to open this piece by pointing out that Phillipe Coutinho was my favourite player at Liverpool. For the last two or three seasons now, Phil has been Liverpool’s best player and has developed into a real, real talent. The fact that I wrote an article about him two weeks ago saying he’s...

Observations as a Virgil Van Strike beats Everton

TELL YER MA, YER MA, TO WIPE AWAY ALL YOUR TEARS, NO TROPHIES FOR 20 YEARS, TELL YEAR MA, YER MA. Thanks to big Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool fans will be able to sing that for another year yet. It was touch and go at times, especially when the Reds spontaneously combusted defensively to let Gylfi Sigurdsson level up,...

Liverpool 2-1 Everton: Van Dijk Knocks Everton Out FA Cup

I'm sure Virgil Van Dijk would've been dreaming about his debut for Liverpool for some time now, but even he couldn't have imagined it going as well as it did.  The game got off to a gritty start, with Everton flying into a number of meaty challenges as you'd expect from the 230th Merseyside Derby....

Liverpool 2-1 Everton – Player Ratings from the Virgil van Dijk Derby

Some things are just meant to be, such as Everton not winning at Anfield. What looked to be heading towards another frustrating Anfield derby this season turned into a game that put a 75 million pound smile on every Red's face. Virgil van Dijk got the winner at the Kop end on his debut...

How Ragnar Klavan has become Liverpool’s new cult hero

Who else thinks Ragnar Klavan’s last-minute winner at Burnley has made it into their favourite 10 Reds goals of all time? That may be both short-termist and an overreaction, but there was something special about it. It was a goal that leaves you on top of the world for hours afterwards, feeling invincible. I could have...

Losing Phil Coutinho is Inevitable

“Liverpool will never progress if they keep selling their best players”.  We’ve all heard this argument before. And on many levels, it has merit. How could you possibly hope to improve if you are forever losing your best player? How can you be strong when you are continually weakening your team? And what a weakening...

5 Players to Replace Phil Coutinho

Thomas Lemar The man who this writer once described as being the creative force behind Kylian Mbappe, Thomas Lemar is the man being touted as the replacement for Phillipe Coutinho. There’s a good reason Monaco’s price tag is yet to waver from the €90 million mark – that is the reflection of his importance to...
