SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Media and Agents Exploiting the Liverpool Brand

Countless Twitter debates with fans of opposing teams centre around the idea that Liverpool are no longer a big club. Historically the giant of English football, the Reds took their domestic form into Europe, conquered it five times, and have the actual trophy to prove it. The clubs C.V would stand up to examination...

DoF Fantasy Series Part 2: How I’d spend £100m at Liverpool

This piece is based on the idea proposed by one of the Anfield Index editors Dan Rhodes, where the challenge is to assemble a Liverpool XI I would be happy to put forth on the opening day of the Premier League Season 2016-17. We are allowed to spend up to 100 million Pounds towards building...

Daniel Agger – The Great Dane

When the news broke last week that Daniel Agger was going to retire aged just 31, I was devastated. Here stands a player, who was a personal hero of mine, so cruelly robbed of what could have been the finest of careers, due to the failings of his body. It's a narrative of the...

The end of Liverpool?

Mourinho. Guardiola. Conte. Wenger. Klopp. If there was an Expendables movie for football managers, it would surely include all five of these esteemed and widely respected managers, all of whom have a history of success at the top level. Yet whilst the movement of two of the most impressive managers of recent years, in Mourinho...

Daniel Sturridge’s Timely Reminder to Liverpool Fans

As I write this, there are 75 days to go for the transfer window to shut, and there are Liverpool fans already writing off 2016-17 for us, citing our lack of transfer activity. That might just be acceptable though, when you consider that there is a considerable section of the fans who want the club...

Roberto Firmino: Sexy Hair, Can Score from Anywhere

It was around June 24th, I was on holiday and went to Dubai to visit my mate. I arrived the night before and we ended staying up late because we’ve not seen each other for a few years and are both avid Liverpool fans. We immediately talked about the poor season that just finished...

Liverpool Football Club; Values and Traditions

Before I start everything, I’d like to say that I am not an expert in economics or business, nor am I old enough to become an expert into Liverpool’s history. But what I am is a passionate supporter who has grown to understand Liverpool Football Club, what it means to me and others alike. Liverpool...

If I had £100 million to spend at Liverpool FC

"Write an article about who you would sign if you had £100 million to spend at Liverpool." AnfieldIndex overlord Gags and editor of the site Dan Rhodes tempted me with this topic. I've not replaced Jurgen Klopp as Reds boss, this isn't Football Manager, Instead I've decided to head up the much fabled transfer committee;...

Reaction to Liverpool’s Fixture List

The Premier League released the fixture list for the upcoming season on Wednesday morning. You have to play every team twice but the order in which you play these games does have an impact on your season, it's indisputable. The fixture list hasn't been too kind for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.  There are two big blocks...

Sadio Mane – The Stat Padder?

Stats changed how people viewed football completely. People no longer solely trust their eyes, they now need the added security of stats when trying to get across an opinion or an argument. You often see people on Twitter throwing around numbers in the middle of a debate to justify their opinion. It's often seen...

Can Emre Be The Heir Apparent to Gerrard & Souness?

Emre Can is a player who somehow divides opinion. Some think he’s overrated and others, myself included, see him as a future captain of the club. There is often talk of a lack of leadership in the team and as we know there are different types of leaders. Two of the most talked about leaders...

Options a-plenty for Klopp in search for wide-man

Jurgen Klopp wants to buy a goal-scoring winger. He hasn't told me this personally, nor has he said it publicly, but based on his targeting of Leroy Sane, Ousmane Dembele and possibly Mario Gotze and Sadio Mane, it seems a certainty that Klopp wants to add more goals into the trio who play behind...

Have Liverpool FC let the Academy down?

*"Baby I don't need dollar bills to have fun tonight (I love cheap thrills) But I don't need no money as long as I can feel the beat. Cheap thrills, Yeah I love those cheap thrills..." An acapella version of the Sia song rings out around the bathroom as he finishes his morning shave. "John,...

Liverpool ITKs: Not really ITK

Liverpool Twitter, well, even football Twitter in general has so many accounts that people around the world follow for “inside knowledge” on transfers. These ITK accounts have tasted what fame is like and are now addicted to it like I am with pizza. It’s a deadly, delicious addiction. For those of you who don’t know,...

Liverpool Transfers: It’s Not About The Money, Money, Money

Mohammed Salah, Alexis Sanchez, Willian, Clint Dempsey, Diego Costa, Memphis Depay, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alex Teixeira, Ousmane Dembele. Different nationalities, positions on the field, huge talent / big names, and plenty of contrasts to one another. But among all these names, there is one common denominator. Liverpool’s failed transfers. Salah, Diego Costa, and Willian eventually went...

Have the Leaks been Plugged at Liverpool?

Many Liverpool fans used to gear themselves up for 10.30pm every single night of the week. It was a ritual. If you'd had a shit day at work then you'd sit on it. It would be worthwhile because between the times of 10.30-11pm anything goes on Liverpool Twitter. That was your window of opportunity...

Liverpool’s English Contingent

No less than five England players come from Liverpool's ranks this summer, making the tournament even more exciting for Reds fans. Nathaniel Clyne Despite a consistent season for Liverpool a starting spot in the England XI is not guaranteed. The Liverpool right back will have to fight his way past Kyle Walker, as the Spurs defender...

Liverpool – No European Football, A Blessing In Disguise?

The Europa League campaign has been the shining light, in what was a season of mixed fortune. Many supporters claim it's been a failure, well I for one certainly don't. As bitter a pill losing a final to Sevilla was, just a year former the club had been embarrassed 6-1 by the hands of...

The Impossible Job – Balancing the Liverpool Attack

beIN Sports thought they'd try their hand at being a news source for Liverpool fans on Tuesday night. They casually slipped the fact Napoli were raising funds for a move for Porto's Hector Herrera by selling star striker Gonzalo Higuain to Liverpool in an article about the Mexican. It's the sort of claim sane Liverpool...

Coutinho stats compared to Iniesta, Ozil, Silva at 23 years old

Another season another big name at Liverpool Football Club linked to leave. This time it's the Brazilian, baby faced assassin, Philippe Coutinho! Liverpool's player of the year really put himself in the shop window on Wednesday night with a hat trick in the Copa America however rumours of some of Europe's elite sniffing around...

Reality Check – Calling all Liverpool fans

Always in the News I don’t have any stats to back this up, or facts to prove my theory, but Liverpool seem to be involved with the most transfer rumours throughout every window.  Yes, I’m obviously a Liverpool fan so I look for Liverpool news, which leads me to Liverpool stories, but I still think...

Much Ado About Higuain – Do Liverpool Really Need Him?

Users of Twitter were feverishly woken up to images of Jurgen Klopp at the Argentina - Chile game. Pictures showed him standing next to Higuain's brother (and agent) 'apparently'. Once the family tree of Higuain had been explored to the hilt, there were proper discussions online whether Higuain was actually a possible transfer to...

Liverpool players at Euro 2016

Talks of Liverpool being the best represented club at Euros have been going on for a while. The Reds have sent 12 players participating in the competition, the most along with Juventus, which is more than any club. Most of the representation is for England, unsurprisingly. England are listed as fourth-favourites to win the Euros with most...

Gonzalo Higuain – Klopp’s New Talisman?

Psychology has the power to make you feel things with a few choice words. So here goes. Higuain, Sturridge, Firmino. Now that this piece has gotten to its intended introduction, and your imagination is stimulated with the idea of the sheer frenzy that trio would bring to our front line; the goals and excitement, the dynamism and...

Kirkby vs The World: The Battle Ahead for Liverpool’s Starlets

Liverpool Football Club are abundant (to say the least) in talented players over at Kirkby. Toni Gomes, Bobby Adekanye, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn, and Adam Philipps are just a few of the boys shining in the academy. But leaping to Melwood isn’t a walk in the park for these players. Since 2013, Liverpool have brought...

Philippe Coutinho and His Uncertain Future at Liverpool

Silly season is upon us and as tradition dictates one of Liverpool's star players is linked with a move away from Anfield. The player in question this time is the little Brazilian magician, Philippe Coutinho. The Liverpool number 10 is rumoured to be interesting both Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona. Can Liverpool break tradition and make...

Bottlers Inc. – The Liverpool Backbone

The Famous “Spine” Every successful team needs one.   In the ‘80s Liverpool had Grobbelaar, Hansen, Whelan and Rush.  United’s dominance of the ‘90s was largely down to their leaders through the middle - Schmeichel, Bruce, Keane and Cantona.   Wenger’s Invincibles had Lehmann, Campbell, Viera and Henry and Chelsea's successes during the last 12 years or...

A Look at Rumoured Liverpool Target Jonas Hector

Movies, specifically romantic-comedies, are to blame for the negativity surrounding certain words and phrases. Because of these movies words like predictable and reliable are shrouded in negative connotations so when you hear a footballer described in a similar way many seem to think these players are ill-fitted to this new era. They have been suited...

Players to watch at the Euros

The Euros are nearly upon us. It's a chance for players to showcase to the world just exactly who they are and what they have to offer. With the evolution of scouting around the world International tournaments are no longer needed for clubs to unearth these under the radar players, however what these tournaments...

FSG Have Failed to Deliver

If ever there was a headline to cause debate this is it. No doubt many will read the title of this piece and either strongly agree or disagree without reading the bloody article. In the last few years I have strongly defended FSG and also given them heavy criticism. There are things they have done...
