Scouser Tommies: ONE HUGE WEEKEND

Scouser Tommies: ONE HUGE WEEKEND

Join Jim Boardman and Jay Reid as they soak in the incredible atmosphere enveloping the city of Liverpool ahead of a monumental Bank Holiday weekend. The city is buzzing with events, from Radio One's Big Weekend to cruise liners docking, but most important of all it’s the final game of the season - a formality to go through before that long-awaited trophy lift, ahead of the victory parade through the city’s streets on Monday. For Jay, that trophy lift is an especially poignant moment; it’s the first time in his lifetime he'll witness Liverpool lift the league trophy at Anfield – a ticket he wouldn't sell for any price. It’s the first time the Reds have lifted the league trophy in front of fans at Anfield for 35 years, so a large chunk of the Liverpool support are in the same boat. Two of the greatest centre-backs in football history will be on the pitch as the trophy gets lifted, with true club legend Alan Hansen set to present the trophy to future club legend Virgil Van Dijk, adding to the symbolism of the occasion. Jurgen Klopp will be there too, keeping to his promise of coming back but not in a way that would interfere with the work of Arne Slot. No surprise he’s there; he’s as big a fan as any of us, and every fan wants to be there. If only - but Anfield, as big as it now is, can’t possibly contain every Red who wants to be there on Sunday. In fact, if estimates of how many people are heading into the city for the weekend are true, 16 Anfields wouldn’t be enough. No problem though; the city is ready to showcase its unique, welcoming spirit and show how it throws a party, as the Reds' heroes show that trophy off from the top of a bus! The last match itself sees Liverpool host Crystal Palace. With both teams in a celebratory mood (Palace fresh from their own FA Cup triumph), Jay and Jim are wondering if it’s even worth bothering with the footy itself. Jim and Jay reflect on a season where Liverpool exceeded expectations to clinch that title, but with transfer windows set to open, work needs to be done to ensure new expectations are met. No Red expected Slot to be so successful so soon - but all Reds want more of the same. The hosts briefly discuss some of the transfer rumours swirling around potential incomings like Frimpong and Kerkez, and possible departures including the respected Joe Gomez and potentially Darwin Nunez. Since the show was recorded, rumours about Florian Wirtz leaving Germany for Merseyside have gathered pace, but until he’s had his photo holding up his new shirt, Jay and Jim are assuming nothing. There's also discussion on manager Arne Slot's latest press conference, particularly his comments on Trent Alexander-Arnold's training and defensive application, and how the media has portrayed this. The hosts touch on how Trent might be received and the importance of focusing on the collective celebration. What advice would the hosts give Arne, if he asked, on how to handle this last bit with Trent? As for that victory parade, the hosts offer some tips for fans wanting to catch a glimpse of the champions. It's a time to savour the moment, celebrate a hard-won title, and look forward to what the future holds for the Reds. As always, there’s plenty to laugh about from across the park, although you aren’t likely to find any of them there as the A55 clogs up under the weight of a blue-tinged exodus to North Wales. Sunday will also mark the final match for George Sephton, the iconic 'Voice of Anfield'. His voice has boomed around Anfield for decades, since the days the Reds were winning titles almost every season. He really is and has been part of Anfield - he’s been there for the good times and the bad, and it really won’t be the same without him. Thanks for everything, George, from all of us. Second Coming For Dejan?

Van Dijk’s record-breaking transfer to Liverpool last month was expected to bring some stability to an all-too unreliable defence, providing the perfect partner for Joel Matip in a towering defensive duo. Yet, things haven’t quite panned out that way, with high-profile mistakes costing Klopp a chance to gain some silverware this season via the FA...

Dejan Lovren Epitomises Jurgen Klopp’s Frustrating Liverpool

Amid all the controversy surrounding Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham, one man who has escaped a chunk of criticism is Dejan Lovren. The centre-back’s horrendous miskick led to Harry Kane winning Spurs’ first penalty of the afternoon - the kind of mistake you expect to see on bobbly Sunday league pitches across the country. Granted, Kane...

Moss Dross – Liverpool 2 Spurs 2

It was the strangest game I’ve seen at Anfield in years. I left the ground utterly unable to form a coherent feeling about what I’d just witnessed and if you can manage to tear down any innate tribalism from your system and are still ravaged by several conflicting emotions, you know you’ve been to an...

Liverpool 2-2 Spurs: A Tactical Breakdown

It was a thrilling game, in which the points were shared, but one in which the away side will be by far the happier of the two sides. Liverpool dominated the entirety of the first-half, scoring early, cutting through Spurs with ease and squandering glorious chance after chance. Liverpool's gameplan, to press aggressively and surrender...

Elite Salah Can Become a Liverpool Icon

In amongst the carnage of the final minutes of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Spurs, Mo Salah scored a goal that had the potential to be one of the greatest Anfield moments of the last decade or so. The chaos, controversy and fume surrounding Kane’s two penalties and the disappointment of two points dropped cannot...

What James Milner brings to Liverpool’s midfield against a low block defence

After two terrible defeats in the space of six days and the Reds failing to add to their squad in the January transfer window, Liverpool fans were understandably extremely concerned about how the rest of the season would pan out. One of the most pressing issues was the team's lack of creativity in midfield,...

The answer to this question is interesting for both Liverpool fans and fans of the teams that are among the top 6 teams in the Premier League. Apparently, no one can provide an exact answer to this question, but some indicators can help us create a sound prediction. Every year, Liverpool, just like Manchester United,...

Observations as Liverpool and Spurs share the spoils in the rollercoaster

Liverpool 2-2 Spurs: Frantic Finish Sees Points Shared At Anfield

A frantic finale saw Liverpool and Tottenham secure injury-time goals, playing out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. With the reverse fixture having gone so poorly for Klopp’s men earlier in the season, this was a suitable opportunity to enact some revenge on Mauricio Pochettino’s side and extend the points gap between...

Liverpool Player Ratings As They Drop Points To Spurs

Struggling to wrap my head around that one, in the aftermath. How much context will the draw have in our season? Probably not that much. Who gains momentum from this one, probably neither. Both teams will feel they should have won. John Moss won't be getting a jokey referee rating from me because there aren't enough...

Roberto Firmino Needs To Produce More

“Firmino is one of the most underrated players in the Premier League – he’s highly rated by Klopp but outside Liverpool he’s not mentioned when talked about top strikers.” The above quote was from Jamie Carragher during the Monday Night Football programme on Sky Sports on 15th January. It is certainly a sentiment that I agree...

Liverpool Should Have Recalled Divock Origi

I am a huge fan of Divock Origi. I admit that to many people that’s not an opinion that has much merit but there for me are a number of reasons why Origi is a great player. The key point in this article is not necessarily that Origi is a great player, although I...

Key Battles: Will it be Red redemption against Spurs?

In yet another season-defining match, Liverpool host Spurs on Sunday at 4:30 GMT. With only 13 games left in the 2017/18 season, The Reds now sit 2 points up on The Lilywhites. It’s the Hope That Kills You

It’s the hope that kills you... a famous saying that can be attributed to almost any situation in life. Some important, some less so but it seems to perfectly sum up the current situation at Liverpool F.C. To be blunt and please excuse the language but ... WHAT THE F**K are we doing? Where is...

Jürgen Klopp Faces His Biggest Challenge As Liverpool Boss

Jürgen Klopp has earned our trust, having transformed this side from its underperforming state at the end of Rodgers’ reign, but fans have every right to question his attitude over the January window, with the club’s old guard suffering two more casualties. Joining Liverpool in January 2013, Sturridge and Coutinho both departed the club having...

Huddersfield 0-3 Liverpool: A Tactical Breakdown

If I were asked to sum up the Liverpool victory over Huddersfield, there's one term which would immediately spring to mind: game management. Quite often, football games aren't decided by tactics, errors, luck and the like all come into play from time to time, and usually, it's Liverpool making errors where they should not...

Roberto Firmino’s Goals Are Making Him The Complete Liverpool Striker

Roberto Firmino is an unbelievable footballer. The Brazilian is one of the most intelligent players to have represented Liverpool in years, possessing a footballing brain many can only dream of. His thought process is always a split-second quicker than most of the mere mortals around him. He sees passes before they can be made, finds pockets...

Liverpool’s Old Guard Barely Hanging On

For Liverpool supporters, transfers can never come fast enough. We always want to push that revolving door a little faster until we find a combination of players that starts filling up the trophy cabinet again. However, glance at the squad from 2013/14 season, just four years ago and you’ll notice that only a few faces...

Liverpool Player Ratings As They Terrorise The Terriers

A win, something we can all breathe a sigh of relief at. A turbulent couple of weeks for Liverpool with transfers, or lack thereof, and some disappointing results, but tonight we can all just smile. Save the transfer rage for Wednesday the 31st and Jim White's yellow ties. Can, Firmino and Salah were on the scoresheet...

Liverpool FC: A lack of winners

In February 2007 I met the woman who would go on to become my wife. Very quickly she was introduced to my obsession with football, and Liverpool Football Club in particular. Thankfully for me, she got onboard with this obsession almost from the off and has gone on to become a Liverpool supporter in her...

VAR Causes Chaos At Anfield

There was a period of absolute perplexity on Saturday as spectators watched Craig Pawson haplessly hold his hand to his earpiece, waiting for a decision to come through from VAR. Jake Livermore appeared to tug down Mohamed Salah in the penalty area, with the referee turning to the newly trialled technology before eventually pointing to...
