Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. Liverpool Player Ratings From Stoke Stalemate

A performance that makes you wonder why you bothered getting up for it in the first place. Yes, Liverpool have got bigger fish to fry at the moment, but in a season that's been defined by European nights it seems a little odd that we're not more worried about making sure we're in the Champions...

Roma Rampage Offers a Glimpse of What Midfield Can Do

Liverpool’s irrepressible front three once again stole the show as the Reds gloriously ripped Roma apart in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final but, for 80 minutes at least, it was close to a perfect team performance. As so often under Jurgen Klopp, a manager who licks his lips rather than quakes in...

Three Years And A Week: Liverpool 5 Roma 2

It’s the early evening of 19th April 2015 and I’m walking home from Kingsbury tube station. The sun is on my back and summer is on the way, but my heart is heavy. I pull my phone out of my pockets and press the necessary digits to find young Sachin Nakrani with whom I am writing...

Patience, Patients & Prospects: Reviving Liverpool’s English Core

Aside from the last ten minutes of the past two matches, everything is looking rosy in Liverpool-land. Sunday night Mo Salah was awarded the PFA Player of the Year award and, of course, Tuesday night ended with Liverpool holding a 5-2 advantage going into the Champions League semi-final away leg. Things are going so...

When in Rome: What’s Your Red Travel Style?

Wielding the Sword – Is Klopp’s Philosophy Viable?

If ever a night encapsulated a team. Liverpool took their season to new heights with a thrilling, brave, brilliant performance at Anfield, smashing Roma to all four corners of the ground as they took a 5-0 lead in a European Cup Semi-Final. And then, well, you all know what happened next. Lovren switched off,...

Liverpool Must Avoid Summer Repeat Of 2002, 2009 & 2014

What do the summers of 2002, 2009 and 2014 all have in common? Liverpool ballsed up every one, that's what. On those three occasions, the Reds had a wonderful chance of kicking on after near-title-winning campaigns, only to come crashing back down to reality after recruiting poorly and allowing rivals to pull clear again. Gerard Houllier...

Observations as Liverpool Deliver Another Strong Message To Europe

Two late goals for Roma may have taken the gloss off the scoreline, but they shouldn't take away from what was a truly special performance from Jurgen Klopp's side. Mohamed Salah made the biggest statement for Ballon d'Or imaginable, notching two world-class goals in the first-half to make yet another mark on Europe's elite competition....

Key Stats as Reds Move Into Pole Position – Liverpool 5-2 Roma

Here are the key stats. Magnificent Mo Leads The Charge In an attacking sense, this was an...

Reds Blast Roma Despite Late Wake Up Call

If blowing out Manchester City in the first-leg of the quarter-final was a statement, this was equal to it. Liverpool were in a rampant mood for 80 minutes, picking AS Roma apart piece by piece to win 5-2 and take a huge step towards Kiev. Referred to as the 'Mo Salah' Derby prior to kick-off,...

Player Ratings from Liverpool 5-2 Roma. Give Mo The Ballon D’Or

How Much Longer Can Harry Wilson Go Unnoticed?

"Curiouser and curiouser!" Cried Alice. She was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English." An apt start to an article for a player who raises a lot of questions. Liverpool have a great track record of producing some fine young talents, with Jurgen Klopp no stranger to giving...

Let's get the cliche out of the way first - These are the nights that we live for!  A Champions League semifinal night is coming to Anfield for the first time in ten years, and even Roma would be daft to expect anything other than a raucous, relentless night in the stands. Liverpool slipped up at the...

Do Liverpool Still Need to Replace Phil Coutinho?

Euphoria, that’s the feeling washing over most of the Liverpool supporter-sphere at the moment. Teams now fear Liverpool, not simply because of the goalscoring prowess, but also the knowledge that...

Observations as Liverpool Stutter Against The Baggies

It all seemed to be going so well for Liverpool. A much-changed side spearheaded by Danny Ings took an early lead before a second-half strike from Mohamed Salah put the away side two goals to the good. Three points heading to Merseyside and plenty of rested legs ahead of far more important games. No-one, not...

West Brom 2-2 Liverpool: What Went Wrong?

With 18 minutes remaining, Liverpool enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 lead against bottom club West Brom and the points were all but in the bag. The travelling supporters were in fine voice in the Midlands sunshine, revelling in Mohamed Salah's latest strike. By full time, West Brom had somehow hauled it back to 2-2 and the...

Slack Reds Pegged Back In Share Of Spoils Against WBA

Liverpool went to the Hawthorns and were pegged back by the basement team West Bromwich Albion, as the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Danny Ings and Mo Salah gave the Reds a comfortable 2-0 lead, but goals from Jake Livermore and Solomon Rondon gave Jurgen Klopp's boys a rude reality check. Starting XIs West Bromwich Albion:...

Liverpool Player Ratings From Hawthorns Holiday

Liverpool refused to get out of second gear as they shared the points with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. With AS Roma and the Champions League firmly on their minds, the Reds threw away a two-goal lead to the pretty much-relegated side, but when there's little to play for and the referee is giving free-kicks...

Roberto Firmino: The Most Underrated Player In The Premier League?

Liverpool have played home to some illustrious talents over the years: Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish, Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez are names that roll straight off the tongue while other far more under-appreciated stars lie in wait. Dirk Kuyt was very much of that ilk. Far from the most technically gifted player at...

Why Rúben Neves Would Be Liverpool’s Midfield Conductor

There will always be archetypes that footballers fit into. Creators, destroyers, poachers, leaders, midfield maestros. That “maestro” trope will be overused, as is the tendency of footballing media. It’s natural to categorise, but what exactly does that trope mean? Maestro? Is he a magic-wielding passer of the ball? Is he tricky with his feet, guiding...

Will Mo Salah End the Messi & Ronaldo Ballon d’Or Stranglehold?

As Mo Salah sent that outrageous looping header into the Bournemouth net last weekend, you were left stunned by yet another piece of individual genius from the Egyptian King. It also clocked up a notable milestone for the 25-year-old, who took his incredible goal tally to 40 for the season, despite not even being an...

Liverpool Battle History Against the Baggies

Liverpool head out to face bottom dweller who has recently changed managers. Liverpool head home having improbably dropped points and all positive vibes go out the window. James’ Bond: The Importance of Being Milner

It’s the 79th minute of the hectic league game between Liverpool and Manchester City. Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool’s Defensive Resurgence

Liverpool’s bumbling back-line was the subject of intense, often deserved, criticism in the early part of the season, but improvements since the turn of the year have been drastic. Now the much-maligned individuals, and indeed the manager who was slammed for supposedly failing to address this debilitating weakness, are due some considerable praise. It’s important...

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – The Perfect Klopp Midfielder

As a raw teenager at Southampton in the 2010-11 season, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain carved out a reputation as one of the hottest prospects in English football. A clamour for his signature ensued in the Summer of 2011, and it was Arsenal who staved off interest from a number of suiters by completing the signing of...
