The Transfer Show: Slot, Alonso and Liverpool’s Summer Crossroads

Trev Downey and Dave Davis assess the growing pressure on Arne Slot and why the Burnley draw became such a pivotal moment in the fan narrative. They explore how Xabi Alonso’s availability is shaping supporter opinion, the divide between UK-based reporting and European speculation, and why Liverpool appear determined to wait until the summer before making any managerial decision. This segment looks at belief, risk and whether Liverpool are prepared to hold their nerve while the noise around the dugout continues to grow. Learn more about your ad choices. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. Tactical Breakdown: Ajax 0-1 Liverpool

Despite both clubs' European pedigree, the last competitive game between these two sides was played back in the time of Bill Shankly. Much has changed since then. Nonetheless, football is still football, and tactics are the gameplans employed by managers to produce a particular outcome. These gameplans are often the product of the manager's...

Klopp praises Fabinho and Joe Gomez central defensive partnership after win at Ajax

Liverpool got their Champions League campaign off to a great start thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Ajax with Fabinho and Joe Gomez forming a solid partnership in central defence. Fabinho had a particularly good game at centre-half while Joe Gomez also showed a marked improvement in his level of performance. This could...

Thiago Influence Can Lift Jordan Henderson To Old Self

Jordan Henderson is an extremely versatile player, as we've seen throughout the entirety of his Liverpool career. Whether it's been as the midfield anchor, as an energetic, box to box tornado of engine room intensity or -- as we saw in his first season with the Reds, under Kenny Dalglish -- as a right midfielder...

Ajax 0-1 Liverpool: Player ratings as Reds battle to three Group D points

Liverpool ended their run of three games without a win by doggedly beating Ajax. Nicolas Tagliafico's clumsy own-goal was ultimately the difference, though Davy Klaassen hit the post and Liverpool spurned opportunities of their own in the closing stages. Here's how the Reds rated in Amsterdam... Adrian - 7 It was far from a confident start - the...

Liverpool Open Group D Campaign With Win

An own goal from Nicolas Tagliafico saw Liverpool open their Champions League Group D campaign with a 1-0 victory away to Ajax. Far from their best, the Reds -- who played a makeshift centre half pairing of Joe Gomez and Fabinho -- battled their way to a win in a professional rather than purring showing. It...

Fabinho may well be first-choice centre-back in Van Dijk’s absence

It's strange to think, but Liverpool's second-best centre-back, after Virgil van Dijk, may well be Fabinho. This isn't an article having a go at a clearly excellent, but still young and developing Joe Gomez. I'm a huge fan of Gomez as a defender. Still only 23, the former Charlton Athletic player is one of England's...

Virgil Loss Will Be a Huge Blow But Liverpool Are Still Brilliant

Let's get the captain obvious statement out of the way at the beginning, shall we? Liverpool will miss Virgil van Dijk during his injury lay off, which, per reports, could last anything from six to nine months. If you could manufacture the perfect centre half in a lab, equipped with elite physical, mental, technical and leadership...

With Ancelotti's coaching clearly making a difference to Everton's performance, this game...

Liverpool defender vows to return “better, fitter and stronger” after ACL injury confirmed

Unlucky Liverpool Still The Team To Beat

If it wasn't for bad luck, Liverpool would have no luck. After the 7-2 drubbing away to Aston Villa, the Reds produced an excellent performance in their 2-2 Merseyside Derby draw at Goodison Park. Despite not winning the game, the defending champions can be happy with the elements of the game -- control, passing, attacking --...

The Thiago effect Having played just 45...

Everton 2-2 Liverpool: Who Was Man of the Match?

Where do you even start with that one? Quite simply the single worst refereeing performance in the entire VAR era. Liverpool robbed of 3 points at Goodison Park after a truly abhorrent display from the officials. Not only that, but the vile behaviour of the Everton players throughout the game looks to have inflicted serious injuries...

Observations as Liverpool robbed against Everton

Liverpool drew 2-2 at Goodison Park in a typically tempestuous and controversial Merseyside derby. Sadio Mané and Mo Salah twice gave Liverpool the lead, before goals from Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin snatched a point for the Blues. But it was two marginal offside decisions that decided the game, as Jordan Pickford avoided a...

Everton 2-2 Liverpool: Player Ratings as VAR drama denies Reds a derby win

Liverpool drew 2-2 with Everton at Goodison Park, after a dramatic final few minutes, which saw Jordan Henderson's would-be winner cancelled out by VAR for offside. Sadio Mane gave the Reds an early lead, which was soon pegged back by Michael Keane. Mo Salah put the Reds back in front in the second half, but...

Liverpool Robbed By VAR In Goodison Derby

VAR controversy abounded as Liverpool were robbed of a late 3-2 victory over Everton at Goodison Park. With the game squared at 2-2 going into injury time, a perfectly good Jordan Henderson goal -- supposedly because Sadio Mané was offside, an assertion that had no evidence in tv pictures -- was disallowed and Everton hung...

By John O’Sullivan  Former Inter Milan and England manager Roy Hodgson has likened the longevity and athleticism of James Milner to the legendary Argentinian international Javier Zanetti.  Hodgson has coached both players during his nomadic managerial career, which -- starting with Halmstad in Sweden in 1976 -- has spanned over forty years.  The current Crystal Palace manager...

Analysis: Is the Liverpool press failing?

Liverpool's success since the appointment of Jurgen Klopp has been built around the press. Initially, it was full-throttle, relentless and tiring to watch. But as the team evolved, so did the press. Their approach was more meticulous, their approach was more intelligent and they seemed to take a more measured approach to it all. It...

Reds to return to Melwood after international break

Virgil van Dijk and...

Mohamed Salah On Course For Brilliant Campaign.

A hallmark of Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp has been their psychological strength. For every curb-ball thrown and every hurdle faced, the Reds have responded like the Champions they are. After losing the Champions League final in 2018 in the most heartbreaking of fashion, the bones of the same Liverpool squad -- minus Emre Can and with...

Jürgen Klopp and his coaching staff were able to work closely with several senior members of the first-team squad who are not away on international duty. Some good news is that Thiago Alcântara, Joël Matip and Sadio Mané all...

Analysis: Has the Liverpool defensive line been exposed?

Liverpool’s defensive line only seems to be put under the microscope after multiple goals are conceded in a single game. It’s an easy target for over the top, reactionary analysis. There was no real mention of it last season when the Reds conceded 17 goals in 27 Premier League matches. An average of 0.62...

Jürgen Klopp may also be able to bring Jordan Henderson back into the starting lineup but Naby Keïta will miss out after an initial positive test while on international duty in recent days.
