Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Time For Liverpool’s Title Bid To Get Serious

Liverpool are off to a good start in the Premier League, having won their opening five games to open up a five point lead at the top of the league. However, this is where the hard work really begins. Liverpool’s trickiest game on paper so far has been at Anfield, where they hosted an...

Predicting Liverpool’s starting eleven for the Chelsea game on Sunday

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side will look to maintain its 100% Premier League start this Sunday when they meet Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Reds have won their opening five league games of the season and sit five points clear at the top of the table for now. However, Frank Lampard's young Chelsea side has shown significant...

Champions League or Premier League: Should Liverpool be prioritising?

Liverpool fans were most likely sick of being asked this question towards the tail end of last season, but it's one that this year takes on an entirely different meaning. When asked at a press conference whether he would rather lift the Premier League or Champions League trophy at the end of the season, Jordan...

Chelsea v Liverpool Preview – Reds up against it to keep 100% start on track

THE DETAILS Venue – Stamford Bridge, Chelsea Referee – Michael Oliver Date & Time – Sunday, September 22nd @ 16:30 Current Odds – Chelsea 5/2, Draw 11/4, Liverpool 1/1 With both sides suffering defeat in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Sunday's fixture is a lot about the 'bounce-back-ability' of each team. Will Jurgen Klopp's 'Mentality Monsters' live up to the...

Adrian insists he can’t be happy with his saves against Napoli due to loss

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian says that despite some fantastic saves against Napoli he can't be happy with himself as The Reds ended up losing 2-0. Adrian made some brilliant stops against Carlo Ancelotti's side with one particular save from Dries Mertens at the far post standing out above all. However, the Spanish shot-stopper insists he is not...

Klopp’s Still Got an Ace Up his Sleeve

It’s cliché to say it. It really is. “Player (x) returning from injury, he’s practically a new signing!” It’s tired, it’s worn out, it’s ostensibly untrue and it’s essentially trying to justify, rightly or wrongly, inactivity. Yet, it sort of does feel like Naby Keita is a whole new signing. Not in the conventional sense, because Liverpool fans...

Why Virgil Van Dijk is better than Sergio Ramos

Twitter can be a strange place. In the past, it was a place to share opinions. Now the majority use it as a platform to ridicule them. Football Twitter has seeped into normal, everyday Twitter. People want to either trigger you or they stick on a mask and start looking for easy retweets and...

Jordan Henderson says Liverpool will continue to move forward despite Napoli defeat

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson believes The Reds will bounce back in the right way from their Champions League defeat at Napoli on Tuesday night. Jurgen Klopp's side lost 2-0 in Naples on the opening night of their Champions League title defence, thanks to a penalty from Dries Mertens and an injury-time goal from Fernando Llorente. Up...

Liverpool Must Improve

Absurd title, isn’t it? Allow me to explain... Every Premier League game these days feels like a ‘must win’ for Liverpool Football Club. Such is life when you’re effectively chasing perfection and trying to outdo this Manchester City outfit. The opening five (admittedly kind) league matches have been expertly navigated by Jürgen Klopp, yielding the perfect...

Napoli 2-0 Liverpool: What went wrong?

This is the second year in succession that I'm sitting down to ponder how Liverpool were beaten at the Stadio San Paolo, but the circumstances feel different. Last season, it was more or less a case of a wretched team performance, but on the whole the Reds turned in a decent display at this time,...

Reds Rue Referee Replay Refusal in Reversal

A contentious Dries Mertens penalty and a late Fernando Llorente goal saw Liverpool start their European Cup defence start with a 2-0 defeat to Napoli in Italy. Jurgen Klopp made three alterations to the team that defeated Newcastle on Saturday, with James Milner and Jordan Henderson returning to the midfield in place of Georginio Wijnaldum...

Player ratings as Reds fall again in Naples

VAR. Going great, isn’t it? I honestly didn’t think we’d do particularly well tonight but I thought we’d at least have the VAR on our side after Saturday’s debacle.  Never mind. Chelsea on Saturday etc, we move on. Just one more thing before the ratings - Peter Walton is a big weirdo.  Adriannnnn, like Rocky! Adrian (8): That’s...

Predicting Liverpool’s starting eleven for the Napoli game tonight

Liverpool return to European competitive action tonight when they face Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo in Naples. We've had a go at predicting Jurgen Klopp's starting eleven. Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli side proved very stiff opposition for The Reds at the same stage of the competition last season. Liverpool will need to be at their...

Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle: A Tactical Breakdown

International breaks can often pose a challenge for teams on a winning streak, with an unnecessary interruption to the rhythm of the side. Against Newcastle, for the opening 15-20 minutes at least, it seemed that was the case. Newcastle opted to launch balls into the wide channels, and fight for second balls, but it...

The Story Behind Liverpool’s ‘Worst Performance of the Season’ and Why it Must Not be Repeated

It's that special time of year again. The European champions are back in action and they will finally be laying their first defence of the crown that sets them apart from the rest. Liverpool travel to southern Italy to begin their European title defence against Napoli on Tuesday evening. It will be the first time...

Jurgen Klopp revealed that Divock Origi will undergo scan this week

Liverpool's Divock Origi will undergo a scan on the ankle injury he sustained against Newcastle on Saturday according to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp. Origi needed treatment after going down injured in the early stages of Liverpool's 3-1 win over Newcastle. The Belgian international striker managed to play on until the 37th minute when he was...

Finding the perfect forward to add to the Liverpool squad

Liverpool went into the summer transfer window looking to add attacking reinforcements. Fans wanted it to happen. Journalists mentioned the need for a fourth attacker.  French media linked the Reds with Nicolas Pepe, German press claimed Timo Werner was a target for the European champions while reports in Spain said Philippe Coutinho was set for...

Liverpool look to continue their European form

Liverpool will bid to reach their third consecutive Champions League final this season and it is hard to see anyone stopping them. The Reds only lost the 2018 final due to a pair of howlers from Loris Karius, and they have been close to invincible since replacing him with £67 million man Alisson. Their...

Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle United: Who was Man of the Match?

Another win at Anfield for the handsome Reds. Even when going a goal down I doubt any Liverpool fan was particularly concerned, 3 points was always likely to be the result. That’s 5 wins from 5 Premier League games now with a trip to Naples up next in the Champions’ League. The defence didn’t have...

Observations as Liverpool brush past Newcastle

Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the season, making it 5 wins out of 5 as Liverpool got past a determined and compact Newcastle. Mané continued his great home scoring record and Salah's goal capped off a perfect afternoon. Subtle shifts in the team as games start to pile up Klopp before the international break had...

Reserved Reds Retain Summit Status

Liverpool retained top spot in the Premier League with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Newcastle at Anfield in Saturday's 12:30 kick off. A brace of goals from Sadio Mané as well as a Mohamed Salah strike were enough to seal the win for Jurgen Klopp's men, despite falling behind to an early Jetro Willems goal...

Player Ratings as Liverpool Top the Toon

A lovely, routine(ish) win for the Reds to start your weekend off. Slightly annoying that everyone's favourite FIFA 12 left-back decided to blam one in with his weak foot before we'd played 10 minutes, but at least it gave Steve Bruce something other than his evening Mixed Grill to be happy about. After that, Sadio...

Liverpool’s subtle tweak to get the best out of Firmino

Liverpool's exceptional start to the season has meant a number of things have gone under the radar. It’s understandable, too. There’s a lot to process with the Reds winning four from four as well as triumphing in the Super Cup.  Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have all started in fine form, Trent Alexander-Arnold...

Predicting Liverpool’s lineup for the Newcastle game on Saturday

We've had a go at predicting Jurgen Klopp's starting eleven for the visit of Newcastle United to Anfield this Saturday. Liverpool get their Premier League campaign back underway in the early game on Saturday and Klopp has some decisions to make, based on how active some players were over the international break. Adrian is set to...

Six games, 18 days: The period where Klopp’s squad will be acutely assessed

Six games, 18 days. Forget the 100 per cent start to the new league season, this is the period where the bulk of Jurgen Klopp's squad will be put through the wringer. The European champions will barely have an opportunity to breathe once the team are reunited following the international break and the return to...

Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool are ready to battle for all trophies this season

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk says The Reds are aiming to win every game they have between now and the next international break in October. Liverpool v Newcastle United Preview – Klopp’s Reds should make it five from five

Liverpool plays Newcastle United in the early kick-off in a game Jurgen Klopp's side is hugely tipped to...

Is Van Dijk the Premier League’s best-ever centre-back?

Has a Liverpool player ever received as much endless praise over a sustained period than Virgil van Dijk? The Dutchman has been an almost godlike figure at Anfield from the moment he arrived in January 2018, powering home a header in front of the Kop on his debut, against Everton no less. Since then, Van Dijk...

John Achterberg discloses details of Adrian’s extra training during break

Goalkeeping coach John Achterberg says Liverpool's Adrian was undertaking extra training sessions during the current international break to make up for the Spaniard's lack of pre-season workouts. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Achterberg disclosed that Adrian had not been sitting back and taking it easy since we last saw him in action. “We did a few extra sessions...
