Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. Liverpool’s Premier League Lineups – a Stats Analysis: Part 2

In part 1 of the lineup analysis, I had a look at our goalkeepers and defense. Part 2 will focus on midfield and attack. The midfield Even after Karius' nightmare performance in Kiev, the midfield is still Liverpool's weakest line going into 2018/2019. Emre Can is likely leaving, James Milner will be 33, Jordan Henderson is...

My Late Father and Liverpool

Being a Liverpool fan, I’ve fallen out of love with the game more times than I can count. Between marginally losing the league in 2008/09, and again in 2013/14, to seeing some of the icons I grew up supporting and adoring leaving the club one-by-one – who could blame me, right? This time, however,...

Liverpool’s Premier League Lineups – A Stats Analysis: Part 1

The Premier League season is over. Man City dominated the season like no club has done in recent (and not so recent) times. For Liverpool, the campaign was relatively successful with the team managing to qualify for the Champions League for the second straight time - something that hasn't happened since a certain Spaniard...

Liverpool FC Follows the Spirit of the Age

In all likelihood, there probably aren’t many people who doubt that electronic sports will play a crucial part in the development of the modern entertainment industry. It will probably influence other sectors as well. While it is too soon to tell what the future of sports will look like, there is no reason why...

Scouting Fabinho: Liverpool’s New Anchor

Monday Night – UK time: Liverpool fans still reel from their Champions League final loss, yet they are motivated in their club’s resolve to use it as the platform for progress; a bump on the road to something special. Nobody quite knew just how quickly the Reds would get moving on that road, though. As...

Fabinho Done – Faster Than A Speeding Edwards

It’s two days after the Champions League final and the dissection of the game has barely even ended. The discussion, as these discussions are wont to do, turns to the state of Liverpool’s squad after what has been a very exciting but ultimately unsuccessful season – at least in terms of silverware. As heated debates...

The Forgotten Talking Points | From The Champions League Final

I've waited a good 36 hours since the full-time whistle to write this - in part to compose my own thoughts and in part to have time to listen to the reactions of the players, pundits and supporters. While the Reds' journey to Kiev ended in abject misery, the road there was glorious. I'm...

So, you want to sell Loris Karius?

There are two major reactions from Saturday night’s painful Champions League final loss to Real Madrid. 1 - Ramos’ da sells Avon 2 - Everything else is Karius’ fault Liverpool can’t do anything about the former, but the latter they are in full control of. If decisions were made via Twitter poll, Loris Karius would be gone,...

Reds can hold heads high after Kiev defeat

So the final that we all looked forward to with bated breath didn't quite turn out as hoped. But there was no shame in losing to Madrid in the manner we did. Even in defeat, the signs were there that this team is already hitting new levels. After a brave start to the game where...

Player Ratings as Kiev proves one step too far for Liverpool

We'll always have the memories of this campaign, even if we haven't got the trophy. The travels, the songs, the goals. There will be greater words filled with more sorrow and dejection than that written in the days and weeks to come, but they're my sentiments to you Reds this evening. Here are the ratings from...

Nearly (First) Mission Accomplished for Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp’s self-ascribed objective of transforming Liverpool’s fan-base from “doubters to believers” has proven one of the most oft-repeated quotes in a regime marked by memorable soundbites. It was never going to be an easy task, and even as he led his side to consecutive top-four finishes (no mean feat given the unprecedented strength of...

The Joy Of Hubris: Liverpool v Real Madrid

In some ways this is all to do with Gini Wijnaldum. Last May he broke down the Anfield right and slotted a vital goal past Middlesbrough’s Brad Guzan to calm Red nerves and put us on the way to Champions League qualification. He was then pretty quiet for the intervening months save for a goal...

Can a Year of Drama be Punctuated by One Decisive Night?

From entertaining spectacles on the pitch, embarrassments off of it; Liverpool has been a bigger source for drama than Netflix lately. Will the Champions League final test our cardiovascular health once more or could the punctuation mark on this season be a decisive one? Jurgen Klopp and his team appear so relaxed in the lead...

Tactical Preview: How do Liverpool beat Real Madrid?

Over the course of the season I've been breaking down a number of Liverpool's matches in both the Premier League and Champions League, however, this week I was asked to do something rather different instead, and scout Real Madrid for the AEye Scouted pod, hosted by Dave Hendrick. Below are the key findings of...

Shooting From The Hip: Trailblazing to Kiev

A team with an esteemed European history, Kiev will be Liverpool’s first final in 11 years and their eighth overall, drawing them level with Barcelona – behind only AC Milan, Bayern Munich and this year’s opponents, Real Madrid. Yet, there’s been something unique about this campaign. It’s not often you see a team utterly blitz...

Forget Attack vs. Defence – Midfield Battle Holds The Key In Kiev

As the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid edges ever nearer, it is no surprise to see predictions being offered everywhere you look. When it comes to guessing how Saturday’s enormous match in Kiev will pan out, the general consensus is that it will be both sides’ vibrant attacks attempting to dismantle a...

The Champions League Final Preview – Key Battles

Liverpool are back. In a UEFA Champions League final. Against the undisputed Kings of Europe at this point. Kyiv is going to be a sea of red on Saturday night as the Reds face Zinedine Zidane’s all-conquering Real Madrid side. Los Blancos are gunning for an unprecedented 13th UEFA Champions League title, and their...

Lascelles or Tarkowski: Who’s the Better Fit?

The wheels of Liverpool’s busy summer have already begun spinning. Even as they head to a Champions League final, rumours have been rife regarding those who will arrive in the summer: The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reported that Michael Edwards has been tasked with finding a centre-half partner for Liverpool’s perceived most important signing in recent...

Liverpool on the Verge of Greatness with Madrid on the Horizon

A little under a week remains before Liverpool kick-off in an epic final against Europe's finest knockout team of recent years. Should Jürgen Klopp taste victory and claim the biggest prize in club football, it will be one of his finest moments yet. A rising force Liverpool will be the underdog going into the match. But...

A Champions League Final – 8000km Away From Liverpool

25th May, 2005 - I was a little kid watching my Indian neighbour get intensely excited about a game of football. The neighbour was thrilled that his team was going to be playing in the biggest club football game of the year. The little kid that I was, it gave me pleasure in trying...

Time For Liverpool To Prove Nice Guys Can Finish First

Bias exists in football, there is no doubt about that. We all overly heap praise on the teams we support and the players we love, while those we dislike must do something magical to earn a similar level of adoration. One thing that has nothing to do with favouritism, however, is just what a likeable bunch...

Kiev Just The Start For Klopp’s Exciting Reds

For many, in fact a whole generation of Liverpool fans only slightly younger than me, the Champions League Final in Kiev could well be their biggest night of supporting Liverpool Football Club. Istanbul and the glory that it provided was 13 solid years ago, and whilst the Reds came close to winning the Premier...

Liverpool’s Triumphs, Trophies and Transfers

With Liverpool on the brink of European glory while being linked to half of Europe the obvious question is; how much of a boost can the Reds expect in the transfer window should they return home from Kiev with number six? Will the top talents be drawn by the possibility of playing for the...

Organising Chaos Against Real Madrid

I shared a thread on Twitter recently about my thoughts on how Liverpool can beat Real Madrid, and it received such positive feedback that I’ve decided to expand on it here. The thread is linked below for those that want to check it out: https://twitter.com/DistanceCovered/status/996345845749637120 Now, as I’ve mentioned in the thread, the key factor when...

I’m a wreck….but just maybe! | Countdown to Kiev

I'm a wreck. Tossing and turning at night. Nervous. Worried. It's not because this is my first article in god knows how long. It's not because I'm worried that Jack Butland may be joining Jurgen's red army. It's all down to the big one. Saturday evening against Real Madrid... European royalty no doubt. I'm convincing myself it'll be...

Trent Alexander-Arnold: The Rise of a Local Star

A local lad from West Derby, Trent Alexander-Arnold embodies the very spirit and culture of the city of Liverpool. Growing up within walking distance of Melwood, he would watch Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Jamie Carragher through cracks in the wall. He knows the city, its people and its values: he just gets it. Since...

What to Expect When Expecting a Naby

It’s clearly an exciting time to be a Liverpool fan. A Champions League final in Kiev awaits, with the Reds once again at the forefront of European football’s greatest night. Meanwhile, the squad itself continues to grow and develop at the behest of its German architect, led by the season’s most scintillating attack. That’s not to...

Could Kiev Be A Shot In The Arm For Confident Reds?

Confidence is a funny thing. Just look at Dominic Solanke for example. Having struggled in front of goal all season, he took his goal against Brighton on the final day of the season like a world class striker, having played himself into a bit of form with some excellent play in the preceding 51...

Win!

Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life, I love you more Allow me to explain if you will. You’ll need coffee. Tissues optional. Heart necessary. Fortitude compulsory. If 2011 was the season that started me, this season could so simply...
