Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. Liverpool: Karius; Gomez, Matip, Lovren, Robertson; Henderson, Can, Milner; Mané, Salah, Firmino. Liverpool Player Ratings As They Terrorise The Terriers

A win, something we can all breathe a sigh of relief at. A turbulent couple of weeks for Liverpool with transfers, or lack thereof, and some disappointing results, but tonight we can all just smile. Save the transfer rage for Wednesday the 31st and Jim White's yellow ties. Can, Firmino and Salah were on the scoresheet...

Liverpool FC: A lack of winners

In February 2007 I met the woman who would go on to become my wife. Very quickly she was introduced to my obsession with football, and Liverpool Football Club in particular. Thankfully for me, she got onboard with this obsession almost from the off and has gone on to become a Liverpool supporter in her...

VAR Causes Chaos At Anfield

There was a period of absolute perplexity on Saturday as spectators watched Craig Pawson haplessly hold his hand to his earpiece, waiting for a decision to come through from VAR. Jake Livermore appeared to tug down Mohamed Salah in the penalty area, with the referee turning to the newly trialled technology before eventually pointing to...

Daniel Sturridge, Thank You & Good Luck

It's been a tough time of late for Daniel Sturridge, in and out of the side over the past few seasons because of injuries, and a change of system; but any time Sturridge was in the side, or came off the bench, there was always a glimmer of hope for Liverpool when in a...

Is There An Anfield Curse?

Liverpool's meek 4th round exit at the hands of The Baggies was as devastating a result as we've had in the Klopp era. Worse than the Europa League final loss to Sevilla? At least at that point, one could argue Klopp wasn't really coaching his own players. Watching Simon Mignolet pick ball after ball...

Don’t Believe The Hype – Liverpool 2 West Brom 3

Won a big game, have we? And thus Liverpool become Liverpool. While the Manchester City game was an undoubted highlight of the season, with Jurgen Klopp’s red men swamping all over the champions elect, it also marked the point where things went wrong. Firstly there was the Swansea game where Liverpool were second to every ball...

Observations as Liverpool Crash Out of FA Cup

Liverpool slumped to their second successive defeat on Saturday night, crashing out of the FA Cup fourth round for the third season in a row. Ending all chances of capturing a trophy this year, The Reds produced a very abject performance as West Brom secured their second win since August - one of which...

Liverpool 2-3 West Brom: VAR the star as Reds exit FA Cup

West Bromwich Albion recorded a shock win at Anfield, beating Liverpool 3-2 to march into the fifth round of the FA Cup at the Reds' expense. A mad opening ten minutes saw three goals before VAR took over, two huge decisions that both went for Liverpool, although the Reds couldn't use it to their advantage. West...

Liverpool Player Ratings As They’re Bossed By The Baggies

Honestly, reckon the FA Cup is overrated anyway. I'm more of a Barclays Asia Trophy kinda guy. Liverpool 2-3 West Brom. They actually had the ball in the net five times, did the Baggies. The beauty of VAR and all that, Liverpool still managed to mess it up. Onto the ratings... Simon Mignolet (5): Where’s Danny Ward? Have...

Sadio Mane’s Struggles Continue At Liverpool

This time last year, Sadio Mane looked a potentially better signing for Barcelona than Philippe Coutinho. That’s how good he was. The Senegalese’s departure for the Africa Cup of Nations in January was a fatal blow to Liverpool’s season, and their title bid fizzled out completely without their destroyer-in-chief around. Come the end of the campaign,...

VAR | Liverpool’s first exposure to it and why it’s here to stay

It's fair to say that every supporter of every club feels like their beloved team has been robbed by refereeing decisions this season. I can certainly say that about every single Liverpool supporter. Football is the most popular sport in the world and yet it is the only major sport to not have some...

Philippe Coutinho: Good Riddance

The 4-3 victory over Manchester City provided the Liverpool fanbase with a great deal of relief following the departure of Philippe Coutinho for £142 million only a few days prior. And to me, that was the end of the matter. Cheers for those stunning goals, it was a delight seeing a young Brazilian talent,...

Will a new look front three get the opportunity to fire Liverpool to FA Cup glory?

The loss of Philippe Coutinho to this Liverpool side was always going to be big, however, with the FA cup returning this weekend will the biggest impact of his loss be on the team we see challenge for the cup? As well as being a world-class player, Phil's greatest attributes was his ability to...

Coutinho-less Liverpool Face A Real Fight to Finish Fourth

Before starting, I feel the need to make one point: I firmly believe knee-jerk reactions are one of the worst things a football fan can be prone to having. It is a common theme in my articles, in fact, that such reactions, and those making them (usually on social media), should be categorically ignored. The...

No need for panic after Swansea defeat

The Swansea defeat was a real kick in the teeth for Liverpool. After a weekend where all bar one of our top 4 rivals gained maximum points. Yet it is too early to panic after previously going on such a long, unbeaten league run. Context Klopp's team is still creating good goal-scoring chances. The team can do...

Not So Typical Liverpool

Typical Liverpool eh? The Reds followed up a sensational 4-3 win over Man City with a shoddy 1-0 defeat to Swansea, in the most Liverpool way possible. Now there’s no denying the performance was everything wrong with Liverpool at the moment – defensively shambolic in instances off set pieces, dominant but unable to break...

Emre Can’s Important Choice | Join Juventus or Stay at Liverpool

Liverpool are considered to be one of the most high-profile clubs in Europe, but they have faced some difficult decisions regarding their star players in recent years. While most clubs with the history of Liverpool attract the world’s top talent, the Reds have now lost two world-class talents, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho, to...

How Did Swansea Tactically Outsmart Liverpool?

"They are like a Formula 1 car. But at 4pm in London it will be difficult to speed, they would be a car like any other. We needed to make sure there was traffic, we could not let them have open roads to drive in." - Carlos Carvahal. What a quote that is. Indeed, it tells...

Swansea, Defeat and the Inevitable for Liverpool

It wasn’t supposed to end this way. Manchester City were the most likely. Disappearing into the distance as they were; 22 games unbeaten in the Premier League and looking generally imperious. Maybe it could have been Arsenal? After all, Liverpool had only recorded one victory in their last six visits to the Emirates despite...

Backs To The Wall Time For Karius

Loris Karius faces a defining period in his Liverpool career, with Jurgen Klopp confirming that the German has surpassed Simon Mignolet as the club’s No.1 goalkeeper. Signing from Mainz in 2016, the 24-year-old arrived having been voted the second best ‘keeper in the Bundesliga behind Manuel Neuer. With such prestige to his name, fans naturally...
