SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. The “Marquee Signing” saga: Do Liverpool need one?

Dreaded yet inevitable, Luis Suarez has finally moved on to La Liga. With the great season last year, it was easy to praise the players for their efforts, and the up and coming campaign is something that everyone is looking forward to. However, now with the star striker departed, do we need to bring...

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool: A Year of Learning

It is at times required to look back to find focus on what lies ahead. As has been recited in articles, podcasts, and books alike, Liverpool's remarkable achievements last season were unfathomable, especially when one considers the obstacles and interrogations of Rodgers' ability which were  met en route. Unfortunately, many believe 'Brenton Fraudgers' will be...

The Long and Winding Road: the origins of fandom Part 1 | Liverpool FC

True football fans - so they say - are born into a team, or if not, then you don't pick your team, your team picks you. A generalised oversimplification, undoubtedly - yet one that will have many nodding gently with agreement or recognition of their own past 'recruitment'. The idea is that this will...

Preston North End 1 Liverpool FC 2 | Match Report

Following defeat in Denmark to Brøndby, next up for Liverpool was a 2-1 win over Preston North End, with goals courtesy of Suso and Kristoph Peterson. Mirroring the weather we were subjected to in the north west, the first half was a pretty dull affair where no real quality was on show for the supporters...

This Time It’s For Real: Loic Remy to Liverpool Makes Perfect Sense

Liverpool are about to sign Loic Remy, which should ferociously ring your mental bells. They've been consistently linked with him since the 2010/11 season when he scored 15 league goals for Marseille, and the yearly reports of a possible move to Anfield have grown tiresome. We've been here before. But it looks like this...

No Moreno? No Problem! | A Look at Liverpool’s Transfer Target

This summer's transfer window for Liverpool was always going to be an important  one in the club's history. Back in the Champions League for the first time in five years feels like a dream, but for our meagre squad it will be a colossal task to compete in all competitions. Formed after the departure of former...

LFC | A Letter From America

A little over a month ago I expressed interest in, and was contacted about, the possibility of being on an Anfield Index “International Addition” podcast. I would be representing Liverpool Football Club supporters from the United States. Unfortunately, due to timing and technical problems on my end, I was not even able to “audition”...

How Transfers Work, Sometimes Don’t – and Why.

I've been thinking about writing something on this for a while, the way transfers work today - or don't in many cases, the seemingly infinite variables and how they differ from those those of yesteryear, and the carefree days of yore - if you believe in all that. There was however an obvious snag,...

Why Bony and not Benzema?

In the last few weeks I’ve sensed a real feeling of discontent regarding the calibre of players Liverpool have been linked to, Premiership names such as Wilfried Bony, Loic Remy and not with players like Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain. I've seen a lot of people say things like "The players we have signed...

Replacing Suarez’s Goals

He's finally gone. Weeks of negotiations have seen the third best player in the world move to Barcelona for £75m. Many have said this is too cheap, especially when you consider the 'less good' Gareth Bale, moved for £80m just last season. However, Bale has never bitten anyone, nor (supposedly) racially abused someone and...

Liverpool FC: Shaping up for 2014/15

Bony…. Um? | A look at Liverpool’s latest transfer target

It's official, Suarez has left Liverpool Football Club for the Catalonian sunshine, to join Messi, Neymar and become one of the "new Galacticos". Good for him, but where does that leave Brendan Rodgers and LFC? €90m richer, but seeking to replace 31 league goals, 12 assists and a whole lot of work rate. Rickie Lambert,...

Replacing Luis Suarez | A Tactical Affair

Replacing Luis Suarez, like-for-like, is impossible. The Uruguayan brought an array of unique qualities, and equally unique flaws, which can’t be replenished by the simple act of buying another footballer. Suarez will leave a void when it comes to many aspects of the Liverpool experience, including the tactical set-up, and what follows is an assessment of...

The Cost Of Adam Lallana

After a prolonged pursuit, St Albans-born Adam Lallana finally signed for Liverpool Football Club. Initially, there was a standoff between the two clubs regarding the fee, with Bournemouth being an added complication into what is always a difficult time. Eventually (after a holiday to Brazil) Lallana signed, but how did the deal come about after...

The Future of Flanagan

For no other club has the term surprise popped up more recently. We were surprised when we signed a Chelsea player who struggled to get off the bench and he began scoring for fun. Surprised that we were within touching distance of winning the league title after finishing seventh the season before. Another surprise...

Liverpool’s Owners Hold All The Cards Over Suarez

And so it happened. Sanchez said no. As ever in transfer windows, it’s not over until Sky Sources tell you. But it’s gone. As hard a pill as that is to swallow, Liverpool do seemed to have moved on. So what now? Where do Liverpool turn next? Well, maybe that’s the wrong question. At this moment, as...

Liverpool, Transfers and the Goalpost

Imagine the scene. It’s the first day of pre-season. There’s damp in the air at Melwood but Brendan and the staff are in good spirits. Brendan was late for once, he had spent a good hour in front of the mirror looking at his new red training top. ‘Tight fitting’ he murmured. ‘Nice!’ Still admiring himself, he was...

Luis Suarez – Remember Him This Way

From his 79th minute substitute introduction against Stoke on Feb 2nd 2011, until he disappeared down the Anfield tunnel after the players' end of season  lap of honour less than two months ago, Luis Suarez was central to the renaissance of Liverpool Football Club. His scruffy debut goal was greeted with joy from those at Anfield that...

The Good, the Bad and the Future | Liverpool FC

It's been a while since I felt particularly moved to write a piece on the re-emergence from near extinction of LFC. So many others were doing it, some good, some bad some obvious or indifferent that yet another to add to the heap seemed pointless, even gratuitous - we had also just lost Kenny...
