Loved him to bits - Scouser Tommies

Loved him to bits - Scouser Tommies

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with the latest on LFC from Liverpool, and it’s not just the heavy rain pounding down on the city to remind them it’s summer. Jurgen Klopp is now the former Liverpool manager, Arne Slot is officially set to become the new Head Coach and the sports pages will soon be more interested in cricket and tennis than football. Klopp’s departure was preceded by a 2-0 win at home to Wolves, with a goal apiece from contenders for the club’s player of the year and young player of the year awards. The stats told a story of how good the performance was, even if the Kop end wasn’t to get a goal to see the manager off, but it was the send-off that followed the match that might live on longest in the memory. Not that the Kop were waiting for the end of the game to start the leaving do, with some of the most sustained singing you’ll hear as almost every page of the Anfield songbook got an outing. As Jay says, there was plenty of recognition for players past and present, especially those who were key to the success Liverpool had under Klopp. The post-match celebrations saw recognition for numerous members of the departing backroom staff, something Klopp had insisted on, but as Jim says, once Klopp got on the stage you could sense he wanted to dispense with any formalities. The way he effectively announced Arne Slot as his replacement was one of the ways he did it, although as Jay points out, fans on the Kop didn’t realise it was Arne he was singing about! In this week’s show Jay and Jim recall some of the key moments from Klopp’s era, and at just how well the man himself fitted in here in Liverpool. An honorary scouser, he fitted in from day one and leaves with the freedom of Anfield, at least in the eyes of the fans. Did Klopp turn us from doubters into believers, or just remind us how good we can be when we allow ourselves to believe? As Jim and Jay discuss, the contrast to a couple of his predecessors was striking, as were the similarities to some of his more illustrious predecessors. Klopp’s announcement of Arne Slot as his successor was followed by the official announcement from the club, hardly a shock to anyone, he’ll officially join the club on June 1st. A new era awaits, and Klopp’s words on how to prepare for it resonated with Jay and Jim: “Go full throttle into it,” Klopp said, “You welcome the new manager like you welcomed me, you go from the first day. Keep believing, push the team.” This week: • Klopp’s last game • The songs • The speech • The goals • The memories • The difference – between him and a couple of his recent predecessors • The similarities – between him and a certain illustrious predecessor • “I’m one of you now. I love you to bits.” – he always was, and same here • The next man – Arne Slot • The pronunciation • The squad he inherits • The new job title • Will he stick to the same system he’s known for? • What’s the future for some of the squad • International call-ups • Avoiding the general election Learn more about your ad choices. The Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool rumours continue to circulate. According to reports from every country that isn’t England, the 29-year-old Spaniard will join the Reds after the completion of Bayern’s Champions League campaign in August. The ludicrously talented former Barcelona linchpin would be a fantastic addition to the English champions’ squad, but the rumours of […]

Liverpool are reported to be chasing the signature of Sevilla defender Diego Carlos before the start of the 2020/21 campaign. The Brazilian centre-back helped Sevilla to a Champions League qualification spot, finishing 4th in LaLiga with just six league defeats all season. Sevilla also had the third-best defensive record in the Spanish top flight, behind […]

Jurgen Klopp is approaching five years as Liverpool manager, which is a frightening sentence to type. Where on earth did the time go? At this point in 2015, Brendan Rodgers was in his final pre-season at Anfield and the Reds were looking to bounce back from the humiliation of a 6-1 defeat away to Stoke. […]

Liverpool are notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to their intentions in the transfer market. After the debacle of the Reds’ first attempt to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, which drew the ire of the Saints over the leaking of the Dutchman’s intent to only join Liverpool, the club has since kept schtum when it […]

The date is Tuesday, 1st May, 1990. Liverpool have beaten Arthur Cox’s Derby County 1-0 at Anfield. Having already wrapped up the league title a week prior following a 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers, the Anfield faithful were preparing to witness Steve McMahon lift the trophy up in the air – for the nineteenth […]

James Milner is a Liverpool legend. A few months into his career at Anfield, it appeared as though he might’ve been more Joe Cole than he was Gary McAllister. For a period of time, it felt as though a Milner performance was a 6/10 and a yellow card was guaranteed. In his defence, though, this […]

There is a school of thought that suggests that Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne is a shoo-in for the P.F.A player of the year award. And there’s definitely merit to that argument with the Belgian linchpin laying on a record-equalling 20 Premier League assists, tying with Thierry Henry as statistically the best wing-man in a […]

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah believes The Reds’ Champions League success in Madrid has spurred them on and is enjoying “unbelievable” feeling of being league champions. In the last 14 months, Liverpool have won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and the Premier League title. Under Jürgen Klopp’s guidance, The Reds have gone […]

Dejan Lovren’s six years at Liverpool FC are over, as Zenit St.Petersburg signed the defender for £10.9 million on Monday. There are many reasons as to why Reds should look back on the controversial defender, with fondness. Dejan Lovren debuted for Liverpool against Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund, in the pre-season of 2014/15. Brendan Rodgers’ Reds […]

Danny Ings is doing exceptionally well for Southampton this season and because of this people want to rewrite history. He scored 22 goals for the season and just missed out on the golden boot. The 28-year-old has scored or assisted in 57% of the matches he’s featured in. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say […]
