Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Reds duo could be losing race to be fit for United clash on Sunday

The Liverpool duo of Joël Matip and Naby Keïta may miss out on Sunday's top-of-the-table Premier League clash with Manchester United. Jürgen Klopp's defensive injury woes look set to continue with Matip missing since going off after an hour of Liverpool's 1-1 draw with West Brom in late December. The Reds were hoping to have...

Xherdan Shaqiri: What Role Will The Swiss Maestro Play Against Manchester United?

Xherdan Shaqiri fell out of favour last season. However, Liverpool have lacked a creative spark over their last three games and, with a crunch clash coming up against Manchester United, it is integral they find it again. Shaqiri looked sharp in the FA Cup last Friday, and may be the man to reignite The...

An Ode To Andy Robertson: Liverpool’s Consistent Scot

For all the talk of the need for Liverpool to reinforce their defence with new signings, their most consistent players ply their trade in the area. Andy Robertson and Fabinho -- previously a defensive midfielder who is learning to play in the heart of defence on the fly -- have been the Reds standout performers...

Young Liverpool defender hopeful of more game time if Reds can progress further in FA Cup

Liverpool defender Neco Williams is hopeful of a long FA Cup run this season so he can benefit from potentially more game time with the first team. Jurgen Klopp's side survived a first-half scare against Aston Villa's youth players last Friday night in the third round of the competition. Louie Barry beat Rhys Williams and...

Liverpool FC and The Season’s Context

Let's make no bones about it, Liverpool were poor in their last three Premier League games. In the draws against lowly West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United, the Reds looked jaded and they failed to turn the lion's share of possession and territory into enough quality chances. The same applied to last Monday's defeat away...

Jürgen Klopp's side eventually overcame Aston Villa's youth players in the third round at Villa Park last week. Now, they've been drawn to play Manchester United at Old Trafford in round four. The last time the sides met...

When Liverpool play Man United, it always means a huge amount. It remains the No.1 fixture in England, bar none. The history between the cities, whether it be relating to music, fashion or the success of their football teams, makes it a heavyweight match-up that will forever feel special. Despite the build-up always being gargantuan and...

Is Kylian Mbappe the answer for Liverpool?

Kylian Mbappe in Merseyside. Although it’s currently just speculation, this has the potential to be a transfer story of the decade, let alone just the summer. It’s pretty fair to say that Mbappe & Erling Haaland are two of the hottest properties in world football at the moment, so any transfer stories are bound to...

Tactical Breakdown: Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

On Monday night the Champions travelled down to St Mary's to face a depleted Southampton side, who were without a number of key players, such as Alex McCarthy, Oriol Romeu and Ché Adams. The Saints lined up in a 4-4-2, in which they looked to press Liverpool's backline. Ralph Hassenhutl's team were also instructed to...

Jürgen Klopp is likely to field a much-changed side for The Reds as some youth talent and squad players are given the opportunity to showcase their talents in a push towards the...

Why the Liverpool system failed against Southampton

Jurgen Klopp switched it up against Southampton. It’s very rare to see him spring a surprise like that, but he has done it previously. I’m not entirely sure if this one was forced on him due to injuries and players needing a rest or whether he thought this tactic would work against the Saints.  We’ll...

Nathaniel Phillips: Why Liverpool’s Mr. Dependable Deserves a Long-Terms Role at the Club

Nathaniel Phillips has all the attributes to become Liverpool's permanent, fourth-choice, centre back. Phillips, thanks to his scruffy beard and sweaty fringe, looks more like a hungover student than a Liverpool centre half. However, looks can be deceiving. His pragmatic style, limited capability and local connection to the club means that a role, as a...

The Reds have recently lost momentum with a three-match winless streak in the Premier League which includes a 1-0 loss to Southampton this week. They are still top of the league standings with 33 points but are only ahead...

It has been reported that Liverpool will not be actively pursuing a centre-half signing during the January transfer window. Trent continues to emulate Gerrard after slump in form at 22

The date was November 12th, 2002, and Liverpool needed to win away to FC Basel to get through their Champions League group. Gerard Houllier's men found themselves 3-0 down before the half-hour mark had even arrived, with one player worse than anyone else on the pitch. That man's name? Steven Gerrard. He was wretched in Switzerland, spraying...

Jürgen Klopp knows Reds must play their way out of current slump

As the fallout from Liverpool's third successive poor performance continues, we look at Jürgen Klopp's post-match press conference following that defeat at Southampton. Danny Ings' early strike was enough to give The Saints all three points on Monday night and make it three games without a win for Klopp's side. This poor run of form has...

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Use of the Ball

Did you know that Trent Alexander-Arnold gave the ball away 38 times against Southampton? Of course you knew, that stat has been plastered over social media ever since the final whistle. Did you know that he also misplaced 28 passes against the Saints? That particular tweet swept across Football Twitter like wildfire.  While at first...

Andreas Schlumberger Appointment Could Be Key To Liverpool Pursuit of Ozan Kabak

Liverpool announced a January signing of sorts last week. The Reds, with a statement on their website, broke the news that they appointed Andreas Schlumberger as head of the newly created recovery and performance role. The German, who previously worked with Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, will join the English champions from Schalke 04 with immediate...

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson dejected after Reds’ defeat at Southampton

Liverpool turned in another abject performance on Monday night as The Reds slowly begin to lose their grip at the top of the Premier League. Danny Ings' early strike was enough to win it for Southampton as Liverpool could only muster one shot on target in the whole game. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match,...

Toothless Liverpool Without A Prayer At St Mary’s As Southampton Win

Liverpool fell to their second defeat of the season with a 1-0 reversal away to Southampton. Danny Ings early goal was enough to seal the hosts win as the Reds -- who owned the possession and territorial stats -- failed to turn their dominance into goals at St. Mary's. It was the third bad performance on...

Liverpool’s Centre-Back Crisis: Skipper the Solution?

‘I don't know exactly how it is at other clubs, but we have to be really cautious and very serious. So I don't know what we can and what we can't do’. Whether it’s smoke and mirrors or Jurgen Klopp keeping his powder dry, the likelihood of a centre-half being pulled out the hat appears...

Will this be Liverpool’s starting eleven to face Southampton tonight?

Liverpool travel to play Southampton tonight in the Premier League as Jürgen Klopp's side looks for its first win in three games. Southampton are also four games without a win, as it happens. Jonny Evans Can Be Liverpool’s Centre Half Emergency Solution

Not that you would know it from looking at the Premier League table, or Champions League group table for that matter, but Liverpool have been hamstrung by injuries to central defenders this season. Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez -- two of Jurgen Klopp's key defensive lieutenants -- will miss most of, if not...

Liverpool defender continues to make “good progress” on his road back to full fitness

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk continues to make "good progress" on his road to recovery according to Reds boss Jürgen Klopp. Van Dijk suffered an ACL injury after Jordan Pickford's horror challenge in the Merseyside derby in October. The centre-back is not expected to return to first-team action until around May. Earlier this week, Van Dijk posted...

Thiago could be Liverpool’s star man in second half of the season

Remember when Liverpool signed Thiago? No, me neither. It was just a lovely dream, wasn't it? Back in September, the Reds recruited the services of one of the best midfielders of his generation, in what felt like a significant piece of transfer business. Liverpool have mastered the art of buying top-level players and turning them into...

“I can work with this performance” – Klopp keen to take positives from Newcastle stalemate

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp believes The Reds were unlucky not to take all three points from their game with Newcastle on Wednesday night. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané all started but none of them could find the finish that would have given Liverpool all three points. Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow made some impressive...
