Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. Is Liverpool’s Squad Good Enough to Contend This Season?

‘This is our year.’ It’s been declared year after year by many Liverpool fans and we’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of stick from rival fans, due to the glaring fact we haven’t won the league since 1990, nor any trophy since 2012. However, in recent weeks I have sensed more pessimism...

The Details Venue - Vicarage Road Referee - Anthony Taylor Date & Time - Saturday, August 12th @ 12:30pm BST The first weekend of the Premier League season is upon us, along with all of its wonderful unpredictability. Losing Close-To-World-Class Coutinho Would Be Unbearable

With the great players, you can see the moment at which they are about to become genuinely world-class. With Steven Gerrard, it was 2004/05, when he matured from being one of Europe’s best young midfielders to one of the finest players on the entire planet. Luis Suarez did it in 2013/14 - it should never forgotten...

What happens next with Liverpool and Virgil Van Dijk?

In a summer filled with ITK's, unconfirmed reports and general nonsense, concrete news is always appreciated. Concrete news is even more appreciated when it's positive for your interests, something Liverpool fans had yesterday as news broke of Virgil Van Dijk handing an official transfer request into Southampton. Yes, Southampton had known of his desire to leave....

Virgil Van Dijk Proves Transfer Requests Are Still A Thing

They say the purpose of the darkness is that it makes us appreciate the light. And following a night where publications from opposite corners of the globe had Phil Coutinho packed up and gone, any positive news would have been welcome. The sun still came up in Liverpool and the headlines improved as the day...

Jurgen’s Four Centre-Backs

Well, the blood really is up, isn’t it? To be honest, the last few days have been too much for a man of my all too advancing years and, on Saturday, I took the decision to momentarily mute Twitter until this was all over. After all, I’ve (mis)used these pages before to point out that...

Liverpool’s Attacking Talent Is Their Strength

Some of Liverpool’s key rivals for the 2017/18 Premiership title have spent a fortune to on new strikers this summer. Arsenal paid £52 million for Alexandre Lacazette, Chelsea spent £60 million on Alvaro Morata and Man Utd splashed out £75 million on Romelu Lukaku. Tottenham already have Harry Kane and Man City can call...

Milner in midfield – masterstroke or massive gamble?

After Liverpool won their final game of pre-season against Athletic Bilbao 3-1, Jürgen Klopp hinted that Alberto Moreno has managed to save his Liverpool future and that as a result, James Milner will be used in his more natural position in midfield this season, allowing Moreno and Robertson to fight over the left back...

How Will Liverpool Survive Early Fixture Congestion?

Now that Liverpool’s Champions League qualification opponent has been drawn the club know they will have two matches against Hoffenheim slotted between their opening three Premier League weekends.  The Reds will have very little time to prepare, recover or to sign players before the international break on August 28th. Saturday, August 12th - Away - Watford Tuesday,...

Who starts at right-back for Liverpool against Watford?

With Nathaniel Clyne set to miss Liverpool’s opening Premier League fixture against Watford next Saturday, having failed to feature prominently in pre-season due to hamstring and back injurie, Jurgen Klopp will have a decision to make at the back. The boss has already confirmed that Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Jon Flanagan are in contention for...

1899 Hoffenheim – The Germans Rags To Riches Story

And so it all comes down to Turn- und Sportgemeinschaft 1899 Hoffenheim e.V., or 1899 Hoffenheim for short. I might start giving them their full name though. I’m definitely getting a half and half scarf. Being a relatively new club   on the European stage there isn’t a great deal known about the men from Baden-Wurttemberg...

Dublin Delight for Klopp’s Confident Reds

Liverpool 3 - 1 Athletic Bilbao August 5th, 2017 Aviva Stadium, Dublin Last pre-season friendly Liverpool lineup - Mignolet, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Lovren, Moreno, Can, Milner, Grujic, Salah, Firmino, Origi Subs: Karius, Ward, Wijnaldum, Gomez, Klavan, Mane, Robertson, Solanke, Flanagan, Kent, Ejaria, Woodburn The last few days have been dominated with rumours about the future of our little magician, Philippe Coutinho. This...

Lallana Out: Liverpool on the Brink

'Adam Lallana out for four months' For Liverpool fans, this crushing news could hardly have come at a worse time. Yet there was a sense of inevitability about it all. Jürgen Klopp's comments regarding Lallana's injury was particularly sombre: 'This is certainly not news we would have wanted. 'Unfortunately, the damage is such that it will likely mean...

Could Ryan Kent be a pivotal part of Liverpool’s squad next season?

With speculation surrounding the Naby Keita transfer appearing to fizzle out, it seems more likely than not the Reds won't get their number one transfer target for this summer. As a result, there has been a lot of debate amongst supporters as to whether the club should turn their attention to signing another winger...

Why Fans Need to Stop Overhyping Trent Alexander-Arnold

First things first, I really, really like Trent Alexander-Arnold. When you write an article designed to temper people’s enthusiasm, it’s generally best to lead with a disclaimer, so there it is, I really like Trent Alexander-Arnold. I think he’s an extremely talented young right-back and I think that there’s every chance he has a...

Is Dominic Solanke’s pre-season form a worry for Divock Origi?

2016/17 was a tough season for Divock Origi. There were ups, such as that brilliant solo goal against Bournemouth from a tight angle but there were also downs, with the striker averaging just 0.9 take-ons and a shot accuracy of 48%. That makes for a poor comparison to 2015/16 in which Origi enjoyed a fine...

Some amazing and unbreakable Liverpool FC records you should know about!

People often say that the records are set so they can be broken in the future. However, some records are simply unsurmountable! Liverpool football club has set many records over its 125-year long history which are hard to be broken even by the best football clubs. Let’s take you through a few of these...

Make-Or-Break Season For Divock Origi

Footballers go in and out of fashion all the time, and any slight lull can see them in danger of being cast aside to the scrap heap in no time. It wasn’t long ago at all that Divock Origi was almost walking on water at Liverpool, earning acclaim from every corner of Anfield and looking...

Liverpool and the Changing Importance of the Full-Back

The Reds 0-3 win at Hertha Berlin was a fine performance and provided a fillip in this most frustrating of LFC summers. Though pre-season score-lines are generally regarded as useless and worthy only for their aerobic benefits, it was interesting to see how the new signings coped. Dom Solanke scored a beautiful goal and...

Down But Not Out: Liverpool defeated in Audi Cup final on penalties

Liverpool 1 - 1 Atletico Madrid (Atletico win 5-4 on penalties) Liverpool were denied their second pre-season trophy after suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat against Atletico Madrid in the final of the Audi Cup at the Allianz Arena. Jurgen Klopp made nine changes to the side which defeated Bayern Munich 3-0 in the semi-final, with Phil...

Liverpool’s Uncharted August

Early in July we all  had our favorite Liverpool writer we looked to for transfer intel, but those usually clued-in were mostly silent.  Into the void stepped a new batch of ITK’s with exotic ties to unnamed “sources” from far away lands. We quietly hoped they had it right.  They didn’t. Curiously, they were all...

Joe Gomez Should Remain At Liverpool This Season

Joe Gomez has endured a torrid time since moving to Liverpool, suffering an untimely ACL injury just seven days into Jurgen Klopp’s tenure as manager. The 20-year-old was ruled out for the rest of the season after being forced off the pitch ten minutes into England Under-21’s game against Kazakhstan. “Gomez came here and I...

Liverpool impress at the Allianz – Liverpool 3-0 Bayern Munich

Liverpool produced an excellent performance against Bayern Munich to pick up a 3-0 victory in the semi-final of the Audi Cup. Jurgen Klopp named a strong starting XI as Roberto Firmino, Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane all started together in attack for the first game of pre-season. Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho were also named in...

Why Liverpool’s Current Squad Is Not Enough To Challenge On All Fronts

Over the season 2016/17, Liverpool played 46 games, which amounts to around 4,140 minutes over the season. However, notably, some players struggled with their fitness, which raises questions of how individuals, the team, and the squad will perform in a season that will include a minimum of eight Champions League games (including and providing...

Why Liverpool Still Need Another Winger

Liverpool have already added one natural wide player to their squad – the exceptionally fast and talented Mo Salah, who appears to be the sort of world class game-changing signing that FSG and Klopp have promised us this summer. However, despite bringing in a winger, there remains a solid argument that Liverpool remain a winger...

Daniel Sturridge: Liverpool’s Potentially World-Class Wildcard

There were a couple of moments at the end of last season that seemed to save Daniel Sturridge’s Liverpool career. By the time the crucial trip to West Ham rolled around on May 14th, the general consensus was that Sturridge’s continued fitness woes had left him surplus to requirements, with a move elsewhere likely this...

Are Liverpool better equipped to “beat the dross” next season?

"Beat the dross, win the league." A well-known mantra from AI's own Simon Brundish describes the ability of title-winning teams to brush aside, on paper, so-called inferior teams. It may seem a simple concept, but it is born from a simple fact: there are more "inferior" teams to play over the course of a...

Why LFC need Naby Keïta more than Van Dijk

Liverpool FC, since the departure of Rafael Benitez, has struggled defensively. Indeed, the last time the team conceded less than 40 goals in a league season was in the 2009/10 season, in which Liverpool conceded 35 goals. Since then, Liverpool have conceded 44 (2010/11), 40 (2011/12), 43 (2012/13), 50 (2013/14), 48 (2014/15), 50 (2015/16)...

Reviewing A Banquet Without Wine – A History of the Reds in the PL Era

When offered the opportunity to read an advance copy of A Banquet Without Wine, I eagerly accepted; it was a welcome break from the academic historical literature which my studies demand, and, given my experience with previous works from The Tomkins Times, my qualitative expectations were high. Beyond that, I remained open to hearing an...

Location: Olympiastadion Lineup: Mignolet, Gomez, Matip, Klavan, Moreno, Can, Wijnaldum, Lallana, Mane, Coutinho ©, Solanke (4-3-3) Subs: Grabara, Robertson, Lovren, Flanagan, Ejaria, Henderson, Firmino, Sturridge, Salah, Kent.
