Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. Naby Keïta: A Statistical Analysis

In my first profile of Naby Keïta, I looked at his personal qualities, attributes, and statistics, and then compared him to Gini Wijnaldum, the player who Keita would likely replace in the starting XI, should Liverpool persist with the staggered 4-3-3 system that was broadly successful during the 16-17 season. In this piece, however, I'll be...

Liverpool’s Best Transfer Window: 1987 or 1999?

If, like me, you are somewhat fatigued by the daily transfer window saga being played out across all platforms of media and need to take a step back from it all, here's something I hope will help. To escape the whole shenanigans and rollercoaster of arguments, discussions and debate as to whether or not...

Statistical Analysis: Is Liverpool’s Defence Really That Bad?

*The stats in this article are gathered manually from Squawka. Minutes include stoppage time. Offensive, Defensive and Net rating are the totals per 100 minutes.  It's silly season yet again. A lot has been made of Liverpool's transfer dealings and the Virgil van Dijk saga in particular. And while without a doubt the Dutchman will...

“It could be a formality” – Chris Williams on Naby Keita Deal

Liverpool have been given a significant boost in their pursuit of RB Leipzig’s superstar midfielder Naby Keita, with the East German side's resolve cracking according to Bundesliga journalist Chris Williams. Liverpool had a €65 million bid rejected by Leipzig on Thursday, according to BILD. However, after continually affirming that the Guinean international wasn’t for sale,...

Dominic Solanke: A versatile squad player from the off?

Mohamed Salah has already signed, and Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita continue to dominate Liverpool-related transfer news, so Dominic Solanke's arrival on Merseyside has almost gone under the radar. The 19-year-old has now officially joined from Chelsea, after a superb summer that saw him win the U20 World Cup with England and be named...

Make-or-break season for Nathaniel Clyne?

I love a solid player - someone you know will never set the world alight and sell millions of shirts, but who will diligently get on with his job and not leave you tearing your hair out. Nathaniel Clyne has been exactly that for the majority of his Liverpool career, filling the error-strewn void left...

The Cult of Lucas Leiva

Liverpool fans are an emotional and nostalgic bunch. We feel the need to eulogise our players to the point where there always needs to be someone at the club who can be considered a legend. With Lucas Leiva the longest standing player at the club and the only member of the first team who...

Tranmere Rovers 0 Liverpool 4 – Preseason Friendly

Jürgen Klopp took his Liverpool side seven miles west to Prenton Park, the Reds beginning their 2017/18 preseason in a similar fashion to 12 months previous. Naming two sides per half Liverpool were very much focused on fitness -- this their initial fixture in a list which sees them travel to Hong Kong to take...

Are Klopp’s January Decisions Costing the Reds Millions in July?

If you want to make a Liverpool supporter sick to their stomach, ask them to think back to January.  It was not a fun month.  What was looking like a juggernaut of a team lost Mané to AFCON, Coutinho and Matip to injury and suddenly we were struggling against lower league competition. Klopp did what...

The Reds’ Midfield Conundrum

With the transfer window officially opening on Saturday, it's no secret Liverpool could well be big spenders this summer. Last season's 4th placed finish did ensure that the Champions League group stages are within touching distance ahead of next season - but in equal measure, it offers plenty of scope for improvement ahead of next...

Liverpool and the Safe Standing Debate: Safety First

Last week the newly elected Metro mayor of Liverpool, Steve Rotherham, expressed an interest in a safe standing section at Anfield. If accepted it would put the club on a par with other clubs around the continent. People will always mention Borussia Dortmund and point to the noise that their standing section creates but...

What Has Happened To Liverpool’s Fanbase?

Liverpool supporters pride themselves on being one of, if not the best, fan base in the world. It is something that has been associated with the Reds throughout history, and while a certain level of bias will always be involved, I have often thought no set of fans are quite as passionate, intelligent and proud...

The Premier League Returns – Are You Ready?

It’s almost back - we’re waiting for the Premier League and the return of our beloved Liverpool with bated breath. While we’re gearing up, why not take a minute to think about all of the time you spend discussing football with your mates. Now, why not take all of that knowledge on sports and...

Scouting Naby Keita – The Unrivalled Midfielder

He’s the talk of the town. Will he ask for a move? Will Liverpool pay the money? Will Leipzig bend to a certain fee? Everyone seems to have their opinion on the Guinean midfielder who lit up the Bundesliga last season, breaking out onto the world scene. So, is he worth all the fuss? In a word:...

FSG Out!

Maybe you read the headline to this article and got all giddy with excitement. Clicked the link with the eagerness of a 10-year-old on Christmas morning, hoping to unwrap all the compelling reasons why FSG should be chased out of town. Or, maybe you read the headline and was utterly outraged. Incredulous, you clicked on...

Roberto Firmino: Klopp’s Crown Jewel

Liverpool's new number 9, Roberto Firmino, is starting his third season at the club, and it's set to be his biggest and most challenging yet. Over the course of his Liverpool career - spanning 90 appearances, in which he has scored 23 times - Firmino has blossomed into one of the league's finest forwards, with...

Why Daniel Sturridge Is Going Nowhere This Summer

There has been a lot written about Liverpool’s transfer window up until this point, but what is interesting is the fact that almost all of Liverpool’s major outgoings are reasonably predictable. Mamadou Sakho, Lazar Markovic, Alberto Moreno and possibly Lucas. One name that has almost fallen away from discussion in terms of departure is...

Why Liverpool Fans Do In Fact Need A Reality Check

I don’t write columns very often. A combination of being too busy with work and not really being arsed make this the first thing I’ve written in a year. I normally prefer to just spew my thoughts en masse onto my Twitter account and leave you to figure out what I’m trying to say....

Will Keita Test Klopp’s Loyalty Towards Lallana?

It is no secret that Adam Lallana is one of Jurgen Klopp’s favourite players. The Liverpool manager has spoken in glowing terms about his silky midfielder endless times since taking charge in October 2015, and Lallana’s game has improved immeasurably under his new boss. For the first year or so of his Anfield career, the 29-year-old...

Liverpool’s Two Ways To Build A Squad

Transfers in football often seem reasonably straightforward. Building a squad is easy - you just isolate areas in your squad where you need another player, either because you’re a player short or because your strongest player in that area is a weak link in the squad. Then... you buy a suitable player. But over...

Liverpool Have The Necessary Firepower For Next Season

With Liverpool set to hold firm and rebuff any approaches for Daniel Sturridge this summer, it’s highly unlikely Jurgen Klopp will add to his striking options. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to fans despite their desires to see Aubameyang or Lacazette lining up in red for the upcoming Premier League season. There are...

Tranmere Rovers v Liverpool – Match Preview

The Reds start at Prenton Park again as Jürgen Klopp gets set for a massive season. It was time for Jürgen Klopp to put the umbrella hat back in the suitcase for another year as he arrived back at Melwood to see what state his Liverpool players were in. Hopefully a good state - in...

Dominic Solanke: A Low Risk Buy With High Potential

Having failed to get the chances many expected him to at Chelsea, Dominic Solanke was always destined for a move to pastures new this summer. A host of clubs were interested in bringing the youngster in but it was Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool that ultimately won the race. With one eye on the future, Solanke joins...

How Liverpool’s Midfield Could Look Next Season

Naby Keita has been linked with a move to Liverpool for some time now. Plying his trade in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig, he was one of the standout performers during the 2016/17 season which rightfully saw him named in the team of the season. Naturally, that’s seen him attract the interest of clubs across...

Why Is Andrew Robertson Already Being Written Off?

In a summer full of possible high-profile signings at Liverpool, the next likely incoming is Hull City’s Andrew Robertson. The young left-back is being hotly-tipped to seal a move to the Reds at some point in the near future, as Jurgen Klopp continues to fine-tune his squad ahead of next season. If there has been a...

Liverpool’s Summer: Don’t Panic!

There’s something hypocritical about being a football writer. Every now and then you’ll pen an article calling for calm or even asking for silence of the bawling masses when ‘the fume’ gets a little too much. ‘Everybody relax’ you’ll shout like a Roman emperor trying to hush the Coliseum while you make your mind up...

Peter Moore: The CEO We All Need

Football is a divisive topic by its very nature. Most people would have hoped Twitter, Whatsapp, Facebook and the like would have brought fans together, settling differences and squabbling. Instead, echo-chambers developed and Twitter is now one of the most toxic, reactive and fickle forums - add in some frustration with the club's performance,...

Can Sturridge & Origi be trusted to be Firmino’s back ups next season?

With reports emerging that Klopp is happy with our frontline heading into next season it's time we took a closer look at whether the options of Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Domonic Solanke and to a lesser extent Danny Ings are good enough and reliable back ups to Liverpool's new number 9 Roberto Firmino. Personally...

With Klopp Keita Crazy, What Can Gini Wish For?

With the Liverpool fan base going crazy over Paul Joyce's 00:08 truth bombs and continued links to the marvellous Naby Keita, one must feel for Georginio Wijnaldum. Although he's currently enjoying a well earned break from football and seemingly posing for a series of well crafted Grand Theft Auto covers, the Dutchman would be forgiven...

Cut Price Left Backs to Improve Liverpool

With the highly-publicized courtship of both Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk taking precedence after wrapping up the signing of Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s efforts to sign a left back appear to have been put on the backburner. After intermittent links to the seemingly Manchester City bound Benjamin Mendy dissipated, the Reds haven’t had their interest...
