Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum knows that The Reds must start their Premier League season off with a win on Friday against Norwich City. For a second consecutive campaign, it looks like Jurgen Klopp's side will be the main challengers to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City title-winning team. Liverpool accumulated a record 97 points last season but still...

National Anthem Booed by Liverpool Supporters – Here’s Why

In the aftermath of the Community Shield, which saw Manchester City beat Liverpool on penalties after a 1-1 draw, the main talking point is not the match itself, but the events before kick-off. As the players lined up facing the royal box, in front of Prince William, it was announced that the national anthem would...

The lack of full back cover at Liverpool is an uncalculated risk

Liverpool Football Club currently has quite possibly the best full-back pair in the world. Last season was record-breaking for both Trent-Alexander Arnold and Andrew Robertson. Shattering the assists records, while covering the flanks of the best defence in the league. Oh, and they also won the European Cup in one of the most memorable...

Liverpool’s James Milner should be fit and available for the Norwich game

Liverpool's veteran midfielder James Milner is expected to be back in action and available for selection when The Reds face Norwich City at Anfield on Friday night. Milner was ruled out of Sunday's Community Shield encounter with Manchester City - an enthralling game which Jurgen Klopp's side was very unlucky to lose on penalties. The club's...

Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City – Observations as City nick Community Shield

It was the stereotypical game of two halves at Wembley Stadium, as Liverpool came out second best after a penalty shootout, that saw 9 out of 10 penalties hit the back of the net. Unfortunately, Gini Wijnaldum was the unlucky one, and the Reds had to be content with what you could possibly call...

Key stats as Liverpool narrowly miss out on Community Shield

A combination of wastefulness and outright misfortune denied Liverpool the early boost of Community Shield success, but still, they could take heart from their impressive performance against their biggest title rivals. Here are the key stats from the season's curtain-raiser: Liverpool the better side City edged the first-half but Liverpool controlled the second, and ultimately the...

Shaqiri To Add Midfield Attacking Thrust

The team Jurgen Klopp named to face Lyon in Geneva on Wednesday evening was interesting for a number of reasons. Not only were Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker given also starts much quicker than anticipated following their return to pre-season from their extended, post-international tournament breaks, but the midfield selection and composition was...

Match Report: City Triumph in Wembley Shootout over Liverpool

A Gabriel Jesus penalty condemned Liverpool to a 5-4 penalty shoot-out defeat to Manchester City at Wembley. Goals from Raheem Sterling and Joel Matip saw normal time finish 1-1 in an entertaining game, but one in which Liverpool could justifiably think that Lady Luck evaded them. In the second half, in particular, Liverpool -- with Mohamed...

Player Ratings as Liverpool Lose Community Shield on Penalties

Liverpool concluded their pre-season preparations with a penalty shootout defeat to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield. After a poor first-half performance, the Reds looked by far the better team in the second and probably deserved to come away with the “trophy”. Liverpool fans should be optimistic about the season...

Man City 1 Liverpool 1 – Community Shield: Who Was Man Of The Match?

With the Community Shield – a match part-preseason friendly, part-trophy competition – you can construct any narrative you want. You can easily overreact to the result: If you win, it’s laying down a marker to start the season; if you lose, it shows you’re not ready to make a serious title challenge. You can...

Lovren Exit Could Pave The Way For Prospects

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has continuously been linked with a move to Italy this summer. The Croatian centre half, 30, was a rumoured target for A.C. Milan, with the Rossoneri apparently eager to lend a central defender this summer. Now, however, it appears the San Siro side have competition for the former Southampton and Lyon man's...

Liverpool’s possible starting eleven against Manchester City this Sunday

This Sunday, Liverpool and Manchester City face off at Wembley in the traditional curtain-raiser to the English Premier League season - the Community Shield. Jurgen Klopp should be able to select close to a full-strength line-up for the fixture as The Reds try to get some kind of psychological headway against Pep Guardiola's City machine...

Trademark Liverpool

I don’t know what the big problem is. “We are Liverpool, tra la la la la,” easily changes to, “We are Liverpool, all rights reserved, we’re the best football team in the land.” Adam Lallana won’t have much to do this season. Imagine the pride he would take in slapping TM’s on every road sign leading...

Ki-Jana Hoever commits his future to Liverpool

Liverpool's 17-year-old defender Ki-Jana Hoever has committed his future to the club by signing a new three-year contract with the Reds this week. The young Dutch defender can play at right-back or centre-back and made his first-team debut for Liverpool in last January's FA Cup defeat at Wolves. The club obviously holds Hoever in high regard...

Liverpool 3 Lyon 1 | Reds back to winning ways before City test

Liverpool could still make two major signings before transfer deadline

Football pundit Tony Cascarino believes reigning European champions Liverpool F.C could yet make two significant signings before the transfer window shuts in nine days' time. Liverpool had enjoyed an extremely quiet summer so far, with only teenagers Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliot arriving at Anfield. However, the Reds are once again linked with a...

Better The Devil Liverpool Know

We've all seen them. All our social media feeds have been inundated this past few months with thousands of takes, from thousands of fans, all with a common message: Liverpool need signing's this summer. Of course, they are right. It would feel like a massive opportunity squandered if Liverpool, the freshly crowned Champions of Europe did not...

Pre Season Selections Give Hints To Pecking Order

Liverpool continued their lacklustre pre-season with a 3-0 defeat to Napoli at the home of Scottish Rugby, Murrayfield, yesterday. The performance, as had been the case in the previous three games on the summer tour of the United States -- against Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Sporting CP -- was poor, as the Reds looked disjointed...

Can this Liverpool Team Finally Deliver the Premier League?

One of the most menacing attacking trios in world football; a menacing defence that boasts possibly the best centre-back in the world; and a non-stop midfield, and yet there are still question marks over Liverpool’s title credentials. Last season, the Reds fell short by a single gut-wrenching point to the money-flailing Manchester City, but given...

Reds head for “massively important” training camp in Evian today

Jurgen Klopp brings his Liverpool team to France today for a final training camp ahead of the new season. The Reds lost 3-0 to Napoli on Sunday evening, their third defeat of the summer so far. However, today they welcome back Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah from their holidays. Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita...

Outside The Box Option Can Provide Wing Depth

Liverpool fell to yet another pre-season defeat on Sunday as they were soundly beaten 3-0 by Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium. The performance was anaemic and sloppy and the Reds made a team who are two weeks behind them in preparations for the new season look far sharper and fluent. An interesting element of...

Lessons Learned From Liverpool FC’s American Tour

Liverpool completed their pre-season tour of The United States with a 2-2 draw against Sporting CP in Yankee Stadium, New York in the early hours of Thursday morning. Expectations vs Reality: What does the season hold for Liverpool?

To say that last season was one that exceeded expectations would be unfair, but to look back at the levels of performance and consistency Liverpool achieved is remarkable. It felt like a title challenge was just around the corner under Klopp, but to do so well, amassing 97 points and losing just once and still...

Virgil van Dijk got the highest possible praise from a former Liverpool defender

Van Dijk is no stranger to praise these days after leading Liverpool to two consecutive Champions League finals and a record points haul in the Premier League in the 18 months...

It was later revealed that Clyne, who has a year remaining on his Anfield...

Havertz Little Patience

Yes, this is a piece condoning, and perhaps even encouraging, a lack of Liverpool signings this summer. But if anyone’s angered by that, they’re hanging onto a reality that’s long passed them by. After all, Liverpool fans have had it broadcasted on repeat that Klopp and co. aren’t planning any significant investment this summer. Of...
