The Transfer Show: Defensive Targets Vanishing as Liverpool Wait

As Liverpool delay major recruitment until the summer, Trev Downey and Dave Davis examine the danger of watching defensive targets slip away. From Guéhi’s move to Manchester City to Chelsea’s pursuit of Jacquet, they discuss how the market is thinning rapidly. The conversation covers Liverpool’s interest in Van de Ven and Bastoni, concerns over price, injuries and tactical fit, and the unresolved futures of Konaté and Robertson. This cut highlights the risk of entering the summer needing multiple defenders in a market where elite options are already being removed. Learn more about your ad choices. Trev Downey and Dave Davis assess the growing pressure on Arne Slot and why the Burnley draw became such a pivotal moment in the fan narrative. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. Lallana Levels Late for Liverpool

A late goal from substitute Adam Lallana salvaged a point for Liverpool in their 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford this evening. The home team had lead through a Marcus Rashford goal mired in controversy but Lallana, who replaced Jordan Henderson, had the simple task of converting Andrew Robertson's cross into an empty...

Indispensable but under-rotated – Liverpool’s flying full-backs

If ever there was a goal to highlight how influential Liverpool's full-backs are on the team, the Reds' second goal against RB Salzburg was exactly that. From Andy Robertson stepping into midfield to the ball being transferred to the opposite side of the pitch for Trent Alexander-Arnold to find his on-running full-back partner with...

Kuyt, under Rafa Benitez's guidance, played alongside talents such as Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano that year. Liverpool lost just two...

Genk vs Liverpool, Three things we expect from the Champions

Trent Alexander-Arnold believes Liverpool are stronger for their setbacks

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold believes setbacks in recent years have made the squad stronger as a unit. The Reds suffered a Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid in Kyiv in 2017, before bouncing back to win the club's sixth European Cup trophy in Madrid in June. As well as winning last season's Champions League, Liverpool...

A game-by-game mentality: How Liverpool can win the Premier League

To lay everything out on the table from the start, here, any talk of Liverpool having won the Premier League title already this season is absolutely absurd. You can certainly lose the title in the first eight games. But with only 21% of the season completed, there’s no chance you can win it in...

Carragher, speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, claimed that Liverpool's number 10 is up there with Manchester City's Raheem Sterling as the best left-sided attacker in world football. "Even after the first couple of games, I said...

Four wonderful years of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

People often say that you remember exactly where you were when huge moments in history occurred. I'll never forget hearing about the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on the bus home from school, for example, or seeing a kids TV show interrupted in order to inform me of the death of Princess Diana. I...

Where does van Dijk rank amongst the best Reds Centre Backs?

It was 1st January 2018 when Liverpool signed a lustrous stopper, one Virgil van Dijk. £75m was the fee, a world record transfer amount for a centre back at the time, and there were plenty of critics that scoffed vociferously at the price tag lauded over the Dutchman’s head. Fast-forward almost two years, and, following a...

How Trent Alexander-Arnold Has Become Klopp’s de Bruyne

No, for the love of God, Trent Alexander-Arnold is not as good as Kevin de Bruyne. Just examine the radar below, courtesy of understat.com, for evidence of that. Kevin de Bruyne, under Pep Guardiola, is a phenomenon, involved in everything Manchester City do on a football pitch. Without him, as evidenced by the performance...

100% Liverpool Writing Their Own Script

Liverpool notched their 8th straight Premier League win of the season, their 17th in a row total and moved eight points clear at the top of the league with a late penalty against Leicester. There was a sense of palatable relief as James Milner stepped up in the 95th minute to down Leicester and give...

Why can’t you play like that every week, Dejan?

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who grimaced, groaned, groaned and flailed when I heard that Dejan Lovren was starting on Saturday. Not only because... Well, he's Dejan Lovren, but because he was to come up against a striker in Jamie Vardy that has a brilliant goal scoring record against the Reds and has...

Liverpool’s Full Backs Add New Attacking Dimension

A prominent and recurring feature of Pep Guardiola's trophy-laden spell as manager of Manchester City has been the Catalan's utilisation of his expensively assembled full backs as ostensible centre midfielders. The positioning of his full backs has provided his City side with numerous advantages. Firstly, it allows for effective triangle shapes to be created between the...

Player Ratings as Liverpool Topple Leicester City

The Reds keep marching on after a dramatic 95th-minute penalty from James Milner sealed all 3 points. Liverpool should have had the game wrapped up much earlier but wasted a number of opportunities, allowing Leicester the chance to level late on. However, it was a thoroughly deserved win which will undoubtedly boil the piss of...

Eredivisie wonderkid is the perfect forward for Liverpool

Ajax lit up the Champions League last season, dismantling the very best before crashing out dramatically in the semi-final. They managed to keep hold of the majority of that team, only losing Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt when many thought they'd be gutted. Yet despite this, they're already old news with all eyes...

How Klopp can maintain Reds winning run

7 league wins on the bounce, 16 league wins out of 16 in the league spanning this season and last. In many respects, it feels scarcely believable that Liverpool are this good after so many years of disappointment. But Jurgen Klopp's current crop are the finest Liverpool side seen in any Premier league era;...

Predicting Liverpool’s starting eleven to play Leicester this weekend

Liverpool take on Leicester City at Anfield today in the Premier League. Here's the starting lineup we think Jurgen Klopp will select for this huge fixture. Apart from Alisson Becker - who it seems this game may just have arrived too soon for - The Reds should be at full strength. Adrian will continue in goals...

Salzburg rollercoaster provides timely reality check for Liverpool

I must admit, I feel a bit daft. It was only recently that I wrote something, somewhere about how Liverpool's players are the epitome of the mentality monsters that Jürgen Klopp christened them as only last season. While that's still not so far from the truth, the Reds certainly have reason to believe that they are...

Liverpool 4-3 Salzburg: Key stats as Reds make amends following collapse

Liverpool's habit of fashioning European theatre very nearly proved their undoing as a first-half performance full of swagger gave way to a nightmarish spell after the break. In little over 20 match minutes, the Reds surrendered a three-goal advantage they had so sublimely built, leaving stunned supporters fearing the worst. But soon the cogs of the...

Liverpool 4-3 RB Salzburg – Player Ratings as Austrians give Reds a huge scare

The European Champions have their title defence up and running again. Liverpool bounced back from their 2-0 defeat in Naples, with a 4-3 win over RB Salzburg at Anfield in what was a crazy game typified by an energetic Salzburg side who attacked with verve, and an uncharacteristically sloppy Liverpool side. Goals from Sadio Mane,...

Liverpool Survive Scare in Anfield Goal Bonanza

A Mohamed Salah brace and goals from Sadio Mané and Andrew Robertson saw Liverpool clinch a 4-3 win over Red Bull Salzburg in an Anfield goal bonanza. The defending champions raced into a three goal lead, thanks to goals from Mane, Robertson and Salah. But the Jesse Marsch coached Austrian side managed to claw the...
