Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Just Imagine The Next Two Windows Without Restraint

As much as I’ve tried to internally (and by way of my last couple of articles) dampen down what could happen at Liverpool, there is still that lingering transfer frenzy that pops up in my mind. The Jurgen Klopp era has been about control as much as it has been about brilliance, but what...

Liverpool F.C Loan Watch: 11/12-11/13

Billy Koumetio (Austria Wien II) Koumetio appears to have fallen out of favour for Austria Wien, and into favor for Austria Wien II. Not exactly ideal. Koumetio played the full 90, but as a left back for Austria Wien II as they lost 2-0 to Rapid Wien II. So, Koumetio went from starting at centre...

World Cup Squads 11/11: Van Dijk, Nunez In, Thiago, Fabio out

On November 11th, we saw a clash of the Borussia sides in the Bundesliga, and eight World Cup squads released! Netherlands, Senegal, Uruguay, Argentina, Qatar, Portugal, Serbia and Spain all revealed their teams today. Unsurprisingly, Netherland's captain Virgil Van Dijk was selected, and $85M frontman Darwin Nunez was picked for Uruguay. Thiago and Fabio...

What Happens In The January Window, If FSG Are Still Here

Liverpool appear to be in the process of finding new ownership, but it would be foolish to bank on a January spending spree by some deep pocketed (as yet) unknowns. In any sale process that involves a multi billion pound acquisition, time and patience is unfortunately something that we all need to acknowledge. The...

Why Liverpool could sign Declan Rice in January

The first phase of this enthralling Premier League season is now in the dust, and ridiculously, the World Cup in Qatar begins this coming Sunday. This whole international competition is a complete farce, from the moment the destination was announced, until the moment it ends. It’ll bring controversy, injuries, upset and fatigue. Yet the...

Southampton (H): What Lessons Did We Learn?

The performance proved to be good enough, but the result was all that truly mattered against Southampton on Saturday. In our last game before the World Cup, Liverpool simply couldn’t afford to surrender any further ground in their fight for a top-four finish. Ultimately, the Reds did prevail and in a certain sense, there’s...

Klopp Hints at More LFC Transfer Concerns Unless Sale Happens

In the lead up to any Premier League game, the managers of the two teams are required to attend a pre-game press conference. With Southampton primed to head to Anfield this past Saturday, the Liverpool manager seemed to take the opportunity to share some thoughts on the Reds' transfer strategy. Whereas we were all...

How Will Liverpool Players Perform in the World Cup?

The World Cup is here – finally. Liverpool, like many other elite teams across the world, has a number of players represented, and some could play pivotal roles in Qatar. However, Jurgen Klopp's team is in an unusual circumstance. For different reasons, several of their top players will not be taking part. Worth noting, Mo Salah's...

Liverpool 3 – 1 Southampton – Premier League Player Ratings

Starting XI Alisson Becker - 9.0 Brazil's number one, in his last start as a red before the World Cup. He was superb, and was able to stand out once again. Trent Alexander Arnold - 6.0 England’s most talked about player, came back in for the impressive Calvin Ramsay. Was solid enough throughout and really seemed intent on...

Liverpool 3 – 1 Southampton – Man Of The Match

Alisson Becker I don’t really like the fact that our goalkeeper is getting so many man of the matches this season, but as long as we win, I’ll keep awarding it. Alisson is the best keeper this Premier League has ever seen, and the giant Brazilian just allows us to be impenetrable at times. We have...

The Kids (Some) are Alright!

It maybe apt that we are focusing on ‘the who’ specifically (maybe one for the dads there), but there was plenty to digest on the back of Liverpool’s third round passage in the Carabao Cup against Derby. Jurgen Klopp utilised the entire spectrum of his squad with experienced internationals, squad players, youth talents and...

World Cup Squads: Six Teams Released, Hendo and Trent Included!

November 10th saw United best Villa in a six goal thriller, and the release of six world cup squads! England, Poland, Germany, Cameroon, Belgium, and Morocco all released their team sheets. Chief among the headlines for Liverpool is that Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have both been included for the Three Lions! Alexander-Arnold will...

Liverpool v Southampton – The Premier League Preview

It’s the last game for these two sides before the Wold Cup circus takes over football, and it represents a chance for both to end this first phase of the season on a high. It’s been fairly mediocre till now for both teams, but there has been the odd bright spot, and the last...

Which Liverpool Players Would Benefit From A Loan

With the on-going saga surrounding new ownership, and the news regarding FSG being willing to listen to offers, it puts the next few months (for LFC) in the air. Presumably, varying conditions will need to be met in order to become viable owners, and I believe there is enough professional respect from John Henry...

World Cup Squads: One Red, Six Ex-Reds

November 9th was an exciting day for world football. We saw Chelsea vs City, Arsenal lose to Brighton, Tottenham lose to Forest (hey maybe we aren't so bad), Liverpool's U13's win a PK shootout, and five squads for the World Cup in Qatar released to the public. France, Croatia, Switzerland, and Wales all made...

Tony Evans: The ‘FSG Outers’ Got What They Wanted

The dreams of FSG haters are about to be fulfilled. It was always just a matter of time. You know the saying, though. Be careful what you wish for. It might come true. Some people may relish the thought of petro-states or oligarchs. There are hardly any out there these days. If a Manchester City-style...

Liverpool 0 – 0 Derby County – EFL Cup 3rd Round – Post-mortem

Liverpool 0 - 0 Derby County - EFL Cup 3rd Round - Post-mortem I know these types of match ups aren’t for everyone, but I always look forward to seeing the younger elements of Liverpool FC turn out for the first team. With a full rotation exercise undertaken by Jurgen Klopp, the team sheet...

Gomez: LFC’s most cashable asset?

Ain’t nobody like Joe Gomez…It’s certainly been a challenging campaign for the 25 year old defender. Numerous lows have been punctuated with the occasional high, as Gomez has found himself the focus for many in a struggling Liverpool side. History has counted for the player somewhat with many, but what has been shown on...

Liverpool 0 – 0 Derby County – EFL Cup Player Ratings

Starting XI Caoimhin Kelleher - 8.0 Was a bystander for much of the first half, with just a dodgy back pass by his captain causing issue in the opening 45 mins. Was called into action more in the second half, but was very assured in his work. Calvin Ramsey - 8.0 Was solid through the first half, looking...

How well are Liverpool finishing?

One of the most well-known bits of folk wisdom in football is that if you want to win anything, you must take your chances. Being able to finish well is the mark of an elite goalscorer, and fans groan in frustration when an enthusiastic midfielder shanks a panicked volley miles wide. Although the rise...

Liverpool 0 – 0 Derby County – EFL Cup Man Of The Match

Liverpool 0 - 0 Derby County - EFL Cup Man Of The Match Calvin Ramsey Showed really good drive and strength on his first start. A brilliant engine, coupled with great decisions on and off the ball. Never seemed fazed by the atmosphere, and linked up really well with the forward players. Even had a couple of...

Imagine If We’d Renewed Gini’s Contract

Apparently it annoys some people to mention certain former players, especially those which could (and should) have been retained by the club. In the case of one former red, Gini Wijnaldum, it seems that only one of him or Jordan Henderson were ever going to get improved terms on a new longer term contracts,...

FSG Sale: No Perfect Solution

Doesn’t really do anything by halves David Ornstein eh…. Ever since the news broke on Monday that as many suspected Liverpool is ‘prepared to listen to offers’, social media has understandably gone into overdrive. Whatever the ‘sales deck’ Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have created contains, it’s hard to imagine FSG will be short of...

Brazil WC Squad Released: Bobby misses out.

Brazil released their squad for the World Cup in Qatar on Monday evening. The big news for Liverpool was that Roberto Firmino missed out, as Pedro, Richarlison, and Gabriel Jesus were chosen over the Reds' frontman. Fabinho did find his way into the squad, expected to compete for minutes with the Manchester United duo...

Liverpool v Derby – The EFL Cup 3rd Round Preview

The League Cup holders begin the process of their defence this week, in welcoming Derby County to Anfield on Wednesday evening. With an inconsistent start to their Premier League season, the reds three ongoing (& imminent cup runs) could represent the best chance of silverware this year. Derby County enter the contest on the back...

Ibrahima Konate: The Present and Future of Liverpool’s Defence

Sometimes, all you need is one individual to make a huge difference in a struggling season. When it comes to selecting Liverpool's best and most important player, the same four or five names will always be bandied around. Alisson leads from the back and is unrivalled in his position in the world, the same applies to...

Playing on the World’s Stage: Liverpool’s Performance at Popular International Fields

Liverpool is a team that has been on the rise in recent years. They have consistently put up strong performances in both the Premier League and Champions League, and their fans have followed them every step of the way. One of the things that makes Liverpool so unique is their ability to perform on the...

Lessons Learned in the Reds’ Victory Over Spurs

A vital three points was obtained at the Spurs stadium, as Liverpool breathed some new life into a faltering league campaign. All the headlines were naturally grabbed by Mo Salah, as a ninth goal in eight games ensured the Reds at least kept the top 4 within their sites. There were a few other...

Tottenham 1 – 2 Liverpool – The Postmortem

Liverpool ended the week on relatively big high, in defeating one of their direct competitors for this year's Premier League top 4. Both teams had key pieces missing though injury, and despite the world class credentials of both opposing managers, you get the sense that neither had a particular efficient day. Jurgen Klopp won...

Understanding The Timing Of FSG’s Sale

It was always inevitable that FSG would sell the club sooner rather than later, but the key point is to understand the timing of their ‘For Sale’ sign and statement, and what has led the Boston-based consortium to choose now as the moment to cash in. FSG are primed to make an enormous amount of...
