Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. It was rather telling that after a game in which all three of Liverpool’s front three scored – taking them to a total of 66 goals between them – none of the conversation was about how good Salah, Firmino and Mané were. So I’m going to start this article with that bit. Because they...

LFC Keeper Targets: Jack Butland – written off too early?

With rumours circulating that Liverpool are interested in bidding for top goalkeeping talents such as Alisson of Roma or Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid, it's easy for fans to get carried away with the prospect of Liverpool possible breaking the world record fee spent on a goalkeeper. Do Liverpool Need a Creative Midfielder to Break Down Defensive Teams?

On the most recent edition of the Tactics Weekly pod, host Daniel Rhodes quizzed Paul Dalglish in an AI:PRO Q&A Special (you can listen for FREE for one week). One particular question (below) posed was that of breaking down defensive sides, an issue Liverpool have had for quite a while - harking back to...

Liverpool’s Best Midfield: What Is It?

Picture the scene: Liverpool are preparing for the Champions League final in May, after a stunning march to the showcase event at Kiev's Olympic Stadium. Having seen off Porto in the last-16, probably despite somehow losing 4-0 at Anfield in the second-leg, they then dispatched of Chelsea and Man United, with last-minute winners in both...

FArcical FA Clear Firmino

So, a month and a half after Bobby Firmino was shoved into the stands by Mason Holgate, swore at him in response, and was accused of being racist by the young English defender, the FA has eventually decided that Firmino did not racially abuse Holgate. This, of course, is great news for Liverpool and...

Karius’ Resurgence The Beginning Of A Much Longer Journey

Loris Karius has largely played second fiddle to Simon Mignolet since the summer of 2016, with the Belgian put at the top of the pecking order in both the Premier League and domestic cup competitions. Yet, his rife inconsistencies allowed the German to sneak through the door and take up the reigns as Liverpool’s...

The Ambition Of Liverpool’s Champions League Campaign

In April 2009 Liverpool went to Stamford Bridge and looked for a miracle. Six days earlier the Reds led from an early goal by Fernando Torres, but it was not a strike which set the tone for the night as Guus Hiddink’s side battered us by three goals to one. The Dutchman coaxed an imperious...

Has Klopp Found the Perfect Balance with his Full-Backs?

Since Nathaniel Clyne suffered a serious back injury in pre-season there has been a lot of uncertainty as to who Klopp will view as his first choice full-backs. Would he favour Alberto Moreno or new signing Andrew Robertson at left-back and on the right-hand side would he opt for the more attacking Trent Alexander-Arnold...

Liverpool FC – If You Build It, They Will Stay

Nothing great ever happens in team sports without the supporting cast playing some role on many different levels. Being in the background is usually no longer enough. The supporting cast now needs to contribute more than just hang around waiting to be dragged to titles. Countless times in recent history we have seen the...

Liverpool FC – Financial Analysis

Amidst the furore of the January transfer window, the UEFA European Club Footballing Landscape report was published, a report which UEFA assert is 'like no other publication of its kind'. In terms of scope and depth though, it supersedes the analysis of the oft-quoted Deloitte Money League, which I broke down with respect to...

Immense Salah-Firmino Partnership Continues To Grow At Liverpool

Great Liverpool attacking pairings throughout history roll off the tongue. Ian St John and Roger Hunt excelled in the 1960s, John Toshack and Kevin Keegan were the archetypal ‘Little N Large’ combo the following decade and Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush were perhaps the Reds’ greatest duo-in-tandem. Jumping into the Premier League era, Robbie Fowler and...

TAA’s display against Porto proves he’s ready to contribute now

As Liverpool steamrolled their way to a fine Champions League win in Portugal, it was easy to let the performance of young Trent Alexander-Arnold go under the radar. With Liverpool's front three in scintillating mood, aided by the revival of James Milner's legs, the 19-year-old went about his job with diligence, adding another impressive performance...

Top-Table Liverpool Send A Message To Europe

When Sadio Mane’s second goal went flying into the back of Porto’s net, what had threatened to be a very, very good night at the office officially turned into something else entirely? Can Liverpool Balance Infrastructure & Intent?

On an otherwise tranquil day last April 9th, the most persistent, never-ending LFC Twitter storm was kicked off by the Echo’s Ian Doyle. Jupiter's Great Red Spot is a mere passing squall in comparison to the furore that Doyle kicked off. It was that day when his article entitled, “Liverpool won’t spend £100m this...

Up the European Record Breaking Reds

What can we possibly even say about that? There aren’t enough superlatives to accurately describe what Liverpool did on Wednesday night. First appearance in the Champions League knockout stage in 9 long years? This was a performance and result that those who witnessed will still be talking about in 9 years’ time. Porto are certainly...

Porto 0-5 Liverpool: A Tactical Breakdown

Liverpool are one of the few clubs still undefeated within the Champions League, but few expected the utterly dominant display, away to Porto, which effectively ended the tie. How then did Liverpool approach the game? For while the scoreline suggests a brutal decimation of Porto, it was not quite that simple. The match was predominantly played...

The Latest In A Long Line Of Deadly Duo’s: Firmino and Salah

Liverpool have long been blessed with tremendous attacking partnerships; there was Emile Heskey and Michael Owen, the brilliance of Torres and Gerrard, the magic of SAS and this season’s elusive ‘Fab Four’. Klopp’s Miracle: Turning Water into Wine, & Making Money at the Same Time

Jurgen Klopp has improved Liverpool all over the pitch, quite literally, since arriving in October 2015. But unlike some of his managerial rivals, he’s done so without spending money in the transfer market. ‘Net Spend’ is a much scoffed at phrase in modern football, but to transform Liverpool into the gegenpressing, offensive monster we often...
