SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Liverpool Must Avoid Summer Repeat Of 2002, 2009 & 2014

What do the summers of 2002, 2009 and 2014 all have in common? Liverpool ballsed up every one, that's what. On those three occasions, the Reds had a wonderful chance of kicking on after near-title-winning campaigns, only to come crashing back down to reality after recruiting poorly and allowing rivals to pull clear again. Gerard Houllier...

It all seemed to be going so well for Liverpool. Slack Reds Pegged Back In Share Of Spoils Against WBA

Liverpool Player Ratings From Hawthorns Holiday

Liverpool refused to get out of second gear as they shared the points with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. Roberto Firmino: The Most Underrated Player In The Premier League?

Liverpool have played home to some illustrious talents over the years: Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish, Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez are names that roll straight off the tongue while other far more under-appreciated stars lie in wait. Dirk Kuyt was very much of that ilk. Far from the most technically gifted player at...

Why Rúben Neves Would Be Liverpool’s Midfield Conductor

There will always be archetypes that footballers fit into. Creators, destroyers, poachers, leaders, midfield maestros. That “maestro” trope will be overused, as is the tendency of footballing media. It’s natural to categorise, but what exactly does that trope mean? Maestro? Is he a magic-wielding passer of the ball? Is he tricky with his feet, guiding...

Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool’s Defensive Resurgence

Liverpool’s bumbling back-line was the subject of intense, often deserved, criticism in the early part of the season, but improvements since the turn of the year have been drastic. Now the much-maligned individuals, and indeed the manager who was slammed for supposedly failing to address this debilitating weakness, are due some considerable praise. It’s important...

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – The Perfect Klopp Midfielder

As a raw teenager at Southampton in the 2010-11 season, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain carved out a reputation as one of the hottest prospects in English football. Liverpool’s Underappreciated Midfield

The consensus of this Liverpool team seems to be that the three attackers are world class, our defence still needs some serious work (although the emergence of Robbo, the signing of VVD and the form of Karius are mitigating this) and our midfield is … alright. The subject of our midfield is an interesting one,...
