SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Liverpool Hamstrung by Injuries

Another day goes by and another player is struck down with an injury.  This time it is Jordan Ibe, and surprise surprise, yet another hamstring injury.  Latest timescale for Ibe is a month on the sidelines. Liverpool currently have 13 first team players on the sidelines, seven of those with hamstring-related injuries, Jurgen Klopp has...

Inter’s Ranocchia to Shore Up the Liverpool Defence?

With the injury crisis the club are currently involved in it's not a surprise that many media outlets all over the world linking any player with functional legs with the club. Liverpool are currently without all four of their senior centre-backs for the trip to Exeter and links to different centre-backs are appearing daily. One...

The Europa League could salvage Liverpool’s season

It's not something you want to hear having spent over £300 million over the past few seasons but with the January window now open fans are discussing what areas of the team still need strengthening. There seems to be polls on Twitter on a daily basis and the alarming thing is a different area...

The De-Evolution of Philippe Coutinho

I remember when we signed Philippe Coutinho from Inter Milan. I hadn't seen much of him other than a few games at Espanyol and the odd Inter game, one of which being their 4-3 victory over Spurs when Gareth Bale grabbed a hattrick. It was the Welshman that grabbed the headlines but I was...

Lallana: A Force Awoken

Since Klopp’s arrival, it's been a tale of ups and downs at Liverpool. Unconvincing performances in the Europa League were forgotten as qualification into the knock-out stages was secured and impressive thrashings of Southampton, Manchester City and Chelsea showcased Liverpool’s potential quality. However, disappointing results against Watford, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and West Ham in...

Benteke is Worse Than Feared – A Terrible Targetman Too

Popular opinion isn’t exactly on Christian Benteke’s side; an ESPN article gave him a 2/10 against West Ham, which doesn’t really require much context. A 2/10 is a polite version of 1/10. It means you have failed at every task you would be typically asked to do in your position, but the qualifier is...

Observations from Liverpool’s win at Stoke

In the grand scheme of things, it's half-time in the Capital One Cup semi-final. A depleted Liverpool side will now take a 1-0 lead to Anfield for the second leg in a fortnight, after a battling display against December's form side, Stoke City. On the whole it wasn't a pretty performance. The Reds started off...

Liverpool Linked With ‘The Serbian Robben’ Filip Kostic

Last week the Serbian website Mozzart Sport linked Liverpool with a move for VFB Stuggart winger Filip Kostic. The 23 year old is only in his second season playing for the Bundesliga side but has been steadily improving ever since joining them. Signed from FC Groningen, who ply their trade in the Eredivisie, the winger cost...

January is Boom or Bust for Liverpool

Just one month ago I wrote on this parish about my excitement for the festive period. It wasn't just the thought of excessive drinking and mounds of mince pies that made me giddy, but the possibility of Liverpool building some momentum. The Reds had just come off the back of three successive victories and I...

Klopp Left with Three Options as Benteke Pressure Mounts

Another week, another mixed set of results, another chorus of grumbling from Liverpool fans over their £32.5m striker. Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Upton Park provided the latest round of evidence in the trial of Benteke, a cloudy affair in which almost everyone employed by the club, from scouts, to former managers, to current owners,...

Liverpool’s Forgotten Man: Tiago Ilori

Liverpool fans got another piece of good news at the start of this current transfer window when it was reported that Aston Villa are thinking about terminating the loan deal they have in place for Liverpool's forgotten man Tiago Ilori. For me personally this is great news as when his loan to Aston Villa...

Illustrating Liverpool’s Pressing Vs West Ham United

We've been collecting Pressing Stats since 2013 on Anfield Index and after two record breaking performances from Liverpool I expected a heavy drop in this loss at Upton Park, I was wrong! Liverpool's pressing effort was actually very close to the game against Leicester City. We analyse the pressing stats and on-ball stats on our podcast...

Liverpool’s Biggest Hurdle in 2016 is Impatience

It’s easy to look at the United fans with their radically pre-emptive Mourinho scarves, and their Sharpie covered kitchen-towl signs, and to forget that Liverpool fans can be pretty stupid too. Jurgen Klopp alluded to one element of the idiocy, or at least childish impatience, in Reds fans, when he said of Liverpool’s inconsistent...

Liverpool FC’s Daytrippers and Anfield’s Atmosphere

They say that the atmosphere is a thing of the past these days at Anfield. That the famous twelfth man is no more. That fans in the terraces can no longer be bothered to sing or cheer the team on when their backs are against the wall. That Anfield is a silent stadium and...

What we learnt in Liverpool’s futile performance at West Ham

It is not how we expected to start the new year. A frustrating Liverpool performance saw West Ham finish as 2-0 victors to complete a Premier League double this season. With the early kick-off, the Reds had the chance to move up to fifth but if results go against us we could be as...

West Ham United 2 Liverpool 0: Player Ratings

Liverpool had a torrid start to 2016 as they produced a performance similar to the one against Watford. The Reds were second best in everything; be it passing, tackling, desire or invention. The level of desperation was quite clearly there to be seen as Dejan Lovren was seen taking free kicks. The lack of...

Running forward and why it seems to be harder than we think

Ask any football fan what they expect from their striker and the first point they will make is that they have to score goals. The best way for strikers to score goals is by making forward runs into the box so that they are closer to the goal when they receive the ball, giving...

Benteke, Goals and Missed Chances

Since his summer move to Liverpool Christian Benteke has been weighed down by the fee The Reds paid Aston Villa. Rightly or wrongly when you sign a striker for £32.5 million you have high expectations. I understand transfer fees don't always represent the quality of a player, the fee is decided by the selling...

Price Cut: Reduced Reds Defeat ASDA-Price-Allardyce

"Playing against a defensive position is just as bad as making love to a tree." - Jorge Valdano A couple of weeks ago I tweeted that, by beating Leicester and Sunderland, Liverpool could finish the year just nine points off first. The response was typical. I was met with groans of, "easier said than done", "this season, you...

Illustrating Liverpool’s Pressing Vs Sunderland

We've been collecting Pressing Stats since 2013 on Anfield Index and Liverpool's performance was a recording breaking one according to the numbers we collect! You can have a listen to the full analysis of the pressing stats on the podcast embedded below. There are also supporting heat map/pressing map combinations below so that you...

Comparing Joel Matip to the Liverpool defence

Schalke player Joel Matip has been linked with a move to Liverpool in the January transfer window in a cut price deal due to his contract coming to an end in June. You'd be forgiven for not being too clued up on Matip, when thinking about Schalke defenders it's usually Benedict Howedes and the now...

Liverpool’s January: Tricky Away Games Kick-Off New Year

With Liverpool finally able to put a fairly disappointing 2015 behind them, we're heading into a new year that's full of promise for Jürgen Klopp's Reds. With a new manager, a new style, and maybe even some new signings (if you believe the rumours), everything's in place for a fantastic start to 2015. Liverpool's January...

Observations from Liverpool’s win against Sunderland

Two consecutive 1-0 victories against Leicester and now Sunderland have seen Liverpool rise up to seventh in the table, level on points with Manchester United. The win on Wednesday night saw similarities to the win on boxing day; an unconvincing 1-0 victory. Benteke bagging the winner but missing a late sitter in both games,...

Marko Grujic and The Significance of Shirt Numbers

Marko Grujic. Up until a couple of weeks ago, the vast majority of Liverpool fans likely wouldn’t have heard of him. Yet now he’s the name on everyone’s lips, as his controversial move to the Reds gets ever closer to being signed, sealed and delivered. I say controversial, not because of the young mans reputation,...

The Klopp Mentality: Making the People Happy

In a football world often described as savage, unrelenting and uncompromising, it’s a pretty good feeling to watch a Jürgen Klopp interview. In such a harsh, embattled landscape where managers all strive to achieve excellence largely through one pre-determined template of how to act in front of the camera and on the touchline, Jürgen...

Time is the Best Remedy for Benteke’s Form

Christian Benteke has been subject to heavy criticism amongst the Liverpool fanbase in recent weeks, with some drawing parallels between his and Andy Carroll's fateful move to Liverpool. Yet in the league, Benteke has made 15 appearances, started on 10 occasions, and scored five, and even chipped in with one assist. In comparison, Luis Suarez...

Liverpool midfield dominance vs Leicester a sign of things to come

Eyes were widened and surprise stated as Liverpool’s lineup for the Leicester City game was confirmed, with Jurgen Klopp abandoning his usual 4-3-2-1 system since joining the Reds and matching up to the Foxes in a tactical sense with a 4-4-2. Pre-game (and, for some unfortunate watchers, in-game) chatter was about how Klopp was affording...

Sinclair and Co – Contracts Costing Liverpool Yet Again

From the moment Jean-Marc Bosman won his case which allowed players to move to clubs in different countries football has been ruled by the players. Players and agents collude with one another looking for that one big payday and it often means their current clubs either lose the player on a free transfer, have to...

Liverpool’s Rebuttal to Leicester’s Pressing/Marking

Taking down the Premier League’s high-flying leaders is no easy feat; Liverpool coming off a winless three game streak never helped the build up to the game either. The talks of the Riyad Mahrez-Jamie Vardy combo ripping through the Reds flooded social media after what a Troy Deeney-Idion Ighalo partnership did in Watford's 3-0 win...

Illustrating Liverpool’s Pressing on Vardy, Mahrez and Kante

Many have stated that Liverpool victory over Leicester City was down to the Foxes having a bad day at the office. I happen to disagree, Liverpool's pressing on the day was very impressive and the illustrations below will help explaining exactly how Liverpool went about their stifling Leicester at Anfield on Boxing Day. The images...
