Scouser Tommies: MILK AND NO HONEY

Scouser Tommies: MILK AND NO HONEY

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return with an episode of Scouser Tommies that rides the highs and lows of a rollercoaster week for Liverpool. It stung to be knocked out of the Champions League, but with a League title still very much in our own hands, thoughts now turn to the potential glory of a Wembley final. The midweek clash with PSG ended in the bitter disappointment of the lottery that is a penalty shootout, one that didn't go the Reds' way. Despite the disappointment, Jay and Jim reflect on a campaign that exceeded expectations, even if it ended in a game that might have been a final were it not for UEFA’s weird seeding system. Darwin was one of the heroes of the first-leg, but when it came to the shootout did the Uruguayan striker sense the collective anxiety of a packed Anfield Stadium? Before that the Reds faced Southampton in the league, and went behind after an uncharacteristic mix-up between two of the stalwarts at the back for LFC. But something we’ve seen from Arne Slot since he took the reins at Anfield is his ability to make key changes during a match, especially at half time, and that’s exactly what he did this time, with Darwin on a rollercoaster and ending the day with a smile. The league game before that saw the Reds beat Newcastle 2-0 in a convincing victory under the floodlights. Now Wembley is calling and that’s who stands in the way of League Cup glory for the second year in a row for the Reds. Also for the second year in a row, Trent is out injured. With Ibou also a worry, Jay and Jim discuss LFC’s squad depth and tactical flexibility. Is Quansah ready to fill in at right-back, or will Arne Slot’s suggestion of playing one of the left-backs there come into being? Liverpool fans always find a way, but once again there have been travel woes for those lucky enough to be heading to Wembley, including a train strike that was called off yet hardly made things better. And, for some reason, it seems there’s been a lot more good will shown to the Toon Army than anything the travelling Kop has ever had when it comes to public transport options for the journey south. That said, the costs involved are eye-watering whichever side of the Pennines you’re travelling from. As for the final itself, Jay and Jim are confident as long as Liverpool are at their best, the way they’ve been for most of this season. Hopefully there’s enough experience in there for nerves not to be an issue. Next up for the Reds is a long break from matches, at least domestically, before the Anfield derby next month, and if Slot’s men do bring that Milk Cup home, maybe it would be a good time to show it off to the fans. Maybe one person in particular could show it off… Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Stock-Taking: Liverpool’s Welcome Break

Seven games into the season and we've arrived at the second international break already. Ordinarily, I have no time for these most unwelcome of interuptions to weekend life. Like most Reds, and fans of other clubs I'm sure, the highlight of my weekend is watching club football. It's what we look forward to, what...

A Pause For Thought | What Liverpool FC and the Supporters Need To Do

Unwelcome though international breaks usually are for many Liverpool supporters, this time may be different. While it may be argued that  the momentum of a much welcome win against West Brom may be lost as a result of the break, this will be more than offset by the benefits of recuperation time and hopefully...

Is there still time & energy for an advanced role in Steven Gerrard?

When you think of the best moments in Steven Gerrard's career, you think of a few years ago, and back towards the Istanbul days. The further forward, higher up the pitch, scoring goals, getting in good positions, type of role that he took on so well, and made him one of the most legendary...

The Mario Balotelli Argument | A Bipolar View

Now I’m not the biggest Mario Balotelli fangirl, you only have to listen to my debut on the AnfieldIndex podcast to know my sentiments on ‘Super Mario’ (by the way I’d never call him that). I couldn’t quite understand the mass hysteria around this signing from our fans. Yeah he’s a big name in...

Will England Damage Liverpool’s Goods?

'Woy' Hodgson named another England squad today in front of the less-than-excited media, as the up-coming European qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia approach. I awaited the news - not particularly eagerly - and rather typically, sighed when I read Raheem Sterling's name on the team sheet. Following Sturridge's injury whilst on international duty, it's...

Coutinho: The Future of Liverpool’s Number Ten

Liverpool's number 1o may not be best suited for the role of his number. The performance of Stewart Downing in the number ‘10’ position against Liverpool made a few people take note of how the personnel tasked with making that position work is forever changing in the Premier League. Examples of teams playing a quicker...

Liverpool vs West Brom including and Mignolet vs Foster Comparison

A new month and hopefully a new start for Liverpool in the Premier League, as West Bromwich Albion travel to Anfield for Liverpool’s first 3 o’clock kick off of the season on Saturday. September should have been a month to remember for Liverpool as they re-entered the UEFA Champions League after a 5 year...

A Matter of Patience | Liverpool FC

Patience is a virtue and we want everything instantly - not in a minute, not in a day or so, we want it now. Or at least it appears to be that way. It is true the season has not got off to the best of starts and Liverpool's Champions League return didn't start overly...

“We Are…Liverpool?”: Tactical Analysis of 2014/15 So Far

May 11th, 2014. A dejected, defeated side trundled around Anfield. A side emotionally drained, physically battered, and wallowing in their failed bid for glory. Liverpool had defeated Newcastle United that day 2-1, going behind from a Martin Skrtel own-goal in the first half which was rectified by a successive goals from two Daniels; Agger...

Liverpool FC: A Case For The Defence?

If ever there was a good time (and there are many) to cut off contact with Twitter it was on the final whistle after Liverpool’s defeat to West Ham. The post-defeat staple diet of hysterical over reaction, scape-goating and abuse aimed at players was served up in super-size helpings. A comment that ‘Brendan Rodgers...

Anfield Index PODCAST Episode 46: Attacking The Attack!

Episode 46 - Attacking The Attack Date: 30th September, 2014 There's never any shortage of drama in the Merseyside Derby and this weekend's didn't fail to disappoint. Adam Lallana Showing the Signs of Successfully Slotting into Liverpool

A Merseyside derby win would have been the perfect catalyst for Liverpool to get going on winning run, especially when the performance was better than what is has been in recent weeks. However, no one can be blamed for the uncharacteristic goal that Phil Jagielka pulled out the hat. 99 times out of 100, that...

Liverpool v FC Basel Preview: Opposition Scouting and Info

On their return to Champions League football after a five year absence, Liverpool made hard work of a home fixture against Ludogorets Razgrad - the so-called minnows of group B. Next week they embark on a trip to the home of perennial Swiss champions, FC Basel, who have a history of troubling English sides...

Liverpool FC: What Do We Need To Do To Save Our Season?

This article is being written in the immediate aftermath of a Jagielka thunderbolt that robbed two points from Anfield. What was a very decent performance from the Reds, was let down but the inability to put the ball in the net to secure all the points. Points we were definitely in need of. At...

Raheem Sterling: The Best Player in the Premier League?

Every season you’re bombarded with tweets and articles about a world beating 18 or 19 year old playing here or there around Europe. Gotze, Hazard and Lamela all spring to mind from the last few campaigns. However, this year the player on everyone’s timeline is Raheem Sterling. He is easily working his way into...

Why Always Him? The Gerrard Compromise

Sooner or later it always comes back to Steven; at least that’s how it’s seemed for Liverpool’s talismanic captain throughout the last decade. Whilst owners, managers and talented colleagues from all corners of the globe have come and gone, Gerrard has remained. An unrelenting red spirit, albeit an inevitably waning force. At 34yrs old Gerrard...

Liverpool FC: The Rough Edge of the Diamond

Right. Let’s get this clear up front. Me and tactics? It’s like asking David Cameron to be compassionate. However, lately, I’ve made an effort to try and make sense of this Liverpool side. Watching it all I’m so confused as to what on earth it is we’re trying to do. Why play Gerrard and Lucas...

The ‘Big Game’ factor: A Good Form of Pressure For Liverpool

Granted, no one would have described the feeling going into the penalty shootout against Middlesbrough as “good pressure. However, when the play was beginning to dry up towards the end again, all I could think was that a so called “big game” was needed. Even just to stimulate some more creative and explosive play, games...

We Are PenaltyPool! | Liverpool & Penalties: Lucky or Planned?

The best way to get over a defeat is to win the next match; so the the old adage goes, and who are we to argue? Happily, participating in four competitions means you never have to wait too long for a chance at redemption. The ignominy of Saturday's teatime capitulation, to a Stewart Downing...

Stop The Press: Liverpool’s Pressing Decline Due to Fatigue or Personnel?

It's been a disappointing week in the Premier League for the supporters of Liverpool FC as the team lost back to back games to Aston Villa and West Ham United. What was even more frustrating was the manner of the defeats, devoid of the attacking verve shown against Tottenham and bereft of the pressing...

Brendan Rodgers: A Man For All Seasons?

Fuming is one way to put it. Disgusted another. Sadly, not surprised. It’s been a full 30 odd hours since the West Ham game. I’ve been quiet, composed (to a degree) and quick to check myself before sending a tweet in rage at the issues that have been brewing for a while. I’ve been through a...

West Ham 3-1 Liverpool: Tactical Analysis

After the midweek game against Ludogorets, there were increased calls for Rodgers to change back to the diamond 4-3-1-2 shape that had worked so well against Tottenham. Part of this was to help give Balotelli some support up front that had been sorely lacking in both of the previous games and also to bring...

Football Fans Are Hypocrites

If I were to call you a hypocrite, chances are you’d be at least a little offended. After all, nobody likes being called names do they? However, as a football fan - whether you like to admit it or not - being one is almost second nature. In fact, if you’re not one I...

Brendan’s Blind Spots

Admittedly this has been written in the aftermath to an atrocious performance from the Redmen away at West Ham United, however that's down more to my laziness than anything I saw during the game. The fact is, these problems have been there for a long time. A quick disclaimer before we start, I am a huge...

Victor Valdes: The view from Barca – Q & A with Rafael Hernandez

When  Simon Mignolet joined the Reds last summer hopes were high for the young Belgian keeper who had impressed during his time at Sunderland. Though eyebrows were raised at how abruptly Reina was sent out on loan to Napoli, many reassured themselves that given such a decision Liverpool's management must've been happy with the...

West Ham vs Liverpool Preview – Sterling vs Valencia Stats Comparison

After a couple of unconvincing performances against two defensive sides Aston Villa and Ludogorets this fixture couldn't possibly come at a worse time. Head to Head The last 5 games against theses side has produced 3...

Every Tale Has Its Villains | Liverpool FC

Like the Joker to Batman. Like Moriarty to Sherlock. Like Scar to Mufasa. Every hero has the dark shroud overcome them at significant points of the story. Yet there doesn’t seem to be a cure in sight. Every tale has it’s villain, and Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool has certainly met theirs; and conveniently, as if it...

Liverpool 2 Ludogorets 1 In-Depth Tactical Analysis: Much To Improve On

Football has a funny habit of exposing almost every emotion you could ever possibly have. Occasionally, it even exposes ones you didn't know were possible for you to have. Anxiety, elation, nerves, frustration, joy, anger, hilarity; all words that could be used to describe the feeling of a fan watching Liverpool's first Champions League match...
