Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Missing Pieces to the Liverpool Puzzle

Since Football began again, it is no secret that Liverpool have been lacklustre. Paling in comparison to the pre-lockdown versions of themselves, they have dropped 10 points in their last 7, double the amount they had dropped in their previous 29 games this season. Something obviously isn’t quite clicking for the Reds right now, but...

Time for Brewster to Oust Ineffective Origi

On Thursday night, two Liverpool strikers suffered very different fortunes. It was an evening to forget for the Reds, whose lack of intensity and focus was plain to see in a rather insipid defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates. As a last throw of the dice in the second half, Jurgen Klopp turned to Divock Origi...

Liverpool’s strength in depth to be tested next season as they aim to defend title

Having been confirmed as champions for the first time in Premier League history, Liverpool must not rest on their laurels for next season. It’s been 30 years since the Reds last won a title, so to avoid a repeat of that, deals must be made and contracts must be signed to strengthen the title-defending...

Why Thiago Could Offer Liverpool Antidote To Their Kryptonite

Liverpool have only dropped points on five occasions in the league this season. You can infer from this that the Reds are accustomed to winning against all means of approaches and tactics. However, when you take out the mauling suffered away to Manchester City -- only days after the confirmation of their title victory and...

Liverpool and Man City – Who needs a busy summer?

With the summer transfer window rapidly approaching, speculation is already growing about which teams will be active, which teams won’t, and who will be coming in. Key Stats as Liverpool lose at the Emirates

Two big first half errors from the usually reliable Alisson Becker and Virgil Van Dijk meant that Liverpool slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium. This was Liverpool’s first defeat to Arsenal in over five years, having not lost to the Gunners under Klopp, and it means that Liverpool will be unable...

Update On Rhian Brewster

Liverpool have been following the fortunes of Swansea City lately, checking up on the progress of young Reds' loanee, Rhian Brewster. The 20-year old forward, who joined the Swans on loan in January, has taken to life in the Championship -- his first regular exposure to adult football -- like a duck to water. At...

Liverpool fell to their third defeat of the season - the second since securing the title in June - at Arsenal on Wednesday night. Jürgen Klopp insisted his players will learn from the human errors that cost them points at the Emirates Stadium. In Defence Of Bobby Firmino

Admittedly, Roberto Firmino ought to score more goals. But you know who else falls into that category? Every footballer who has ever laced a pair of boots up. Much has been made of the Brazilian's recent domestic goal drought at Anfield -- which, at the time of writing, extends to 18 Premier League games -- and...

Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool: Observations from an inexplicable defeat

Liverpool have cruised to the Premier League title with such a blissful ease this season that rival fans will see this immensely frustrating run of games as just deserts. On Saturday, the overly-merciful Reds were the victims of a vintage smash-and-grab. Here, they served up victory to a rotated Arsenal side on a silver platter. It's...

Limp Liverpool Lose in London

A lax display saw Liverpool fall to their second post title win defeat with a 2-1 reversal at the hands of Arsenal. A Sadio Mane goal gave the Reds the lead, but two huge errors gift-wrapped two goals for the Gunners for Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson. The visitors dominated the possession, in terms of...

Player Ratings for Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool

Liverpool started the match by having the run of play and were deservedly in the lead, but their sloppiness soon led to madness as two absurd mistakes by world class players ruined the match and ended Liverpool’s bid to eclipse City’s points record. Alisson – 4 His costly howler gifted Arsenal the lead that they wouldn’t...

Liverpool Relegated Player Transfer Roulette

Long linked with Timo Werner, the Reds — who were either unwilling or unable to match the financial package on offer in West London — were beaten to the signing of the German international by Chelsea. Should Liverpool be interested in Leicester attacker?

Harvey Barnes was the talk of Liverpool Twitter last week. I’m not entirely sure, but I’m not one to pass up an opportunity to take a detailed look at a player. The Leicester City man impressed me last season after returning from his loan spell. His expected goal contribution (goals and assists) was higher...

Burnley's Nick Pope was in inspired form for The Clarets, denying Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané on several occasions. Andy Robertson scored...

Liverpool must finish as winners, not with a whimper

Liverpool are Premier League champions. Sorry, I just had to say it again. It sounds too good not to! The long and arduous wait for that illusive first title in 30 years is over, yet in recent fixtures, I can't help but feel a little frustrated with how the team has been performing. It was far more...

Key Stats as Reds drop points at home v Burnley

Burnley nabbed an undeserved second half equalizer to frustrate record-chasing Liverpool, who dropped points for the first time at Anfield this season. Toothless Liverpool Misfire Their Way To Burnley Draw

Liverpool had their 100% winning record at home in the league taken away from them, after poor finishing and inspired keeper saw them frustratingly draw 1-1 at home to Burnley.
